I went to the emergency room with extreme pain, I was two months pregnant, I was looked at for maybe 5 minutes, sent home with tetracycline. One week later, in even more pain, I went back. Again I was looked at less then 10 minutes and they were going to give another type of penicillin. I can only thank God because something in me thought the baby was in the tube. I didn't leave the emergency room but waited to speak to another doctor, who listened and told me to come back the next morning. I was given an ultrasound and I was right. They rushed me into surgery where they removed the fetus and the tube. They went on to tell me that I'd lost over 2 pints of blood and could have died. I truly thank God because nobody would have ever checked me out properly and I wouldn't be here today

The differences in prenatal care between Black women and other races is real. To blame it on a slavery holdover is just dumb. It boils down to education and culture within their own community. Many pregnant Black women will not even get their Blood Pressure checked on a regular basis.

I found out later that my experience was not normal and was negligent. 😢 I pretty much took my health care into my own hands with my second child and educated myself to form a birth plan instead of just trusting the hospital to care for me. As someone who holds a clinical doctorate I of course believe in diversity in the medical profession . I want to also bring up the point of a study of cardiologist from a few years ago. The study revealed black doctors also discriminated against black patients. When black patients reported symptoms there was a delay in appropriate intervention when treated by both black and white doctors. The one doctor in this story who urged us all to check our implicit bias was spot on, and this advice is applicable to both black and white medical professionals. Systemic racism has taught us as black people to hate ourselves. What colonialism created was masterful in that centuries later; their goal of white supremacy is still being achieved albeit in the more covert ways. In closing, many people believed hiring more black police officers was the key to police brutality. This is simply untrue, many times those black officers are working in fear as well, and will go along to get along. I’m not alone in this experience as some of the worst interactions I’ve ever had with law enforcement was with 2 black NYPD officers. A change in mentality is key.

This is bad advice. Turning to midwives because of negligent doctors isn’t the solution when midwives aren’t qualified to provide emergency care (especially surgical care) to save the baby s Life once the fetal Heart tones go south. I used to be a litigator on medical liability cases, most often on doctors/ hospitals side. Babies can hang themselves in late birth stages with the cord without more than minutes to react. Women can bleed to death fast if the placenta gets removed incompletely. Don’t risk the mother s and Baby s Life in dangerous midwives only births unless they happen in a hospital with surgical abilities and a qualified doctor only a room away. What women (and apparently especially minority women ) need is diligent doctors that LISTEN and like this doctor said doctors that question their own stereotypes and biases. If you want a midwife led delivery, do it in a hospital with doctors ready to step in when the heart tones show jeopardy

@@dinavienna I'm sticking with my advice as I hope more women do choose midwives. I would only involve a doctor in my pregnancy if it was absolutely medically necessary. Praying for the families torn apart by tragedies like this. This should never be happening, God bless those families ❤
@dinavienna
@dinavienna 2 года назад
@@shellyknowsall i ve seen enough of the tragedy on the patient side in the courtroom not to want women to draw the wrong conclusions out of negligent medical care - towards incomplete and dangerous medical care. A case still haunts me where the baby hanged itself with the umbilical cord in the last stage of birth. Question was whether the ob gyn would have had to see it. A midwife only delivery means certain death for your baby because she can’t do a c section, and that is a question of 2 minutes max to do the c section or not do it.no way to reach the hospital from a home birth In this case . Being in the hospital means to be exposed to a better or worse doctor but your baby WILL STAND A CHANCE. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t fiercely demand competent doctors - of course we can and should ! Every birth gone wrong is one case too many Nothing wrong in choosing a midwife to prepare you, nothing wrong with a midwife leading your fully informed delivery In an emergency equipped hospital. Everything wrong with laying your life in a health professional S hands ONLY who can t perform life saving medical intervention for you or the baby.
@shellyknowsall
@shellyknowsall 2 года назад
@@dinavienna I never said I was doing a home birth nor am I going with an ob. I plan on having this last one in the hospital like the first 2 pregnancies and with an epidural under the care of the midwives. Again I'm saying I wouldn't choose a doctor unless it was medically necessary, as in myself or my baby needed medical intervention (c- section, extreme tares, etc) because midwives do not do medical interventions. My first 2 deliveries were 9lb+ boys (born at 40w & 38w). I had a 3rd/4th degree tare with both boys because they had 99%> huge heads, my second ended up in the NICU because he had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck 3xs. The nurses and doctors at Nicu were wonderful. I'm not saying I wouldn't except medical intervention on behalf of my babies or I, I'm saying only if needed.

So its not quite as simple as ppl think. The BEST ADVICE I CAN THINK OF IS 1) DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH AND BE SEMI KNOWLEDGABLE. 2)BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE AND FIGHT FOR YOURSELF BECAUSE PROBABLY NOBODY ELSE WILL AND 3) FOLLOW YOUR GUT AND LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. IF U FEEL SOMETHINGS WRONG TELL THEM. IF U THINK SOMETHING WASNT DONE PROPERLT OR THEYRE DISMISSING A PROBLEM U REALLY THINK U HAVE TELL THEM

Serena Williams almost died from a clogged artery during childbirth. Serena Williams, professional tennis player. As in: healthy, rich as all heck, black woman. This treatment of black women actually effects all sorts of medical encounters, including surgeries, where people have died due to the same gap in education. Let's say it is a health issue. The assumption here would be that the reason black women die 3 times more than white women would be that black women are less healthy- but why would that be? How did that happen? Give me an answer that doesn't read as racist.

@@StarrySeal I'm sure Serena was treated better than most, just as a white famous tennis player would, .she still had a clogged artery. Women no matter race, still need to go into pregnancy healthy. Serena being thinner still helped her but people would rather focus on the treatment of black women than the health of the women. I don't know many black women that are not overweight and have other underlying issues that they may be unaware of. I am not excusing that there are some medical workers that are not giving proper care, but they are probably not treating any one with full proper care. Get off the bed / back and let gravity help with the progression of birth go back and look at the history of how midwifery ended .. birth is a natural process ... animals know how to give birth better than we do lastly can't emphasize the importance of consuming the placenta .. you can get it freeze dried

For real though, why does every News channel make everything an issue of race? Maybe you should consider also: black people are significantly poorer and have a higher lack of medical services because of said poorness that is typical of what happens when you sustain a system(Which is typically Democrat led) that seems to do nothing but make black people more poor? (for the political party for Minorities you sure often have nothing but constant problems with minority communities which is pretty contradicting.)

Well the implicit bias is how the stories are presented. First of all, why are you comparing blacks to whites instead of blacks to Asians, Black to Chinese, or Puerto Ricans to Portuguese ? Why are whites the ultimate standard ? How do we know Mexicans aren’t doing better than whites ? But You’ve already set the parameters for the narrative. And second of all, there’s no way to prove how long Black women wait in the goddamn emergency room. There’s no way to prove how long it takes to get black women drugs in the hospital. Anybody who says the contrary is a liar For if anything else , How many doctors treating black women are black themselves ? But women can go on and on blaming other people for their problems because sympathy and pity , is the mothers milk of female and black empowerment
@StarrySeal
@StarrySeal 3 года назад
Actually we do know all of that information. It just happens that black people were able to petition more, and any change that happens in policy around black people ultimately effects everyone positively, including whites. We also know, and it's mentioned in the video, that there are a ton of stereotypes and holdovers from slavery that make black women especially endangered; Such as the concept that black women are incapable of feeling real pain (which is a real thing that doctors surveyed for). Asian people actually are very close to whites in maternal deaths but there is also no known medical related pressure for asian people. It's trackable and understandable.
@MrSanford65

@@StarrySeal No we do not know all the information because nobody knows the race of the doctors who are treating the black women, And I highly doubt somebody has composed statistics of the race of the women waiting in emergency room . Do people honestly think that the nurses are going to avoid the black women waiting and go to the next person behind them ? And as far as doctors believing that black women can’t feel pain, I mean c’mon . How would you ever be able to get through medical school believing that ? How about compiling Statistics of the condition of the black women. The obesity, the use of drugs and alcohol . The so-called black community is the only community in this country that tries its best to act the same as each other , and since everything is bound by its lowest common denominator, it’s more likely that certain pre-existing pathologies are more evident in black women then any other race which would complicate pregnancies. To believe everything is always other peoples fault is to believe that black people are totally passive lumps of clay always ready to be molded by any pair of white hands that come along......
