London's freshest export Black Midi live from our London studio Sound brought to you by Void Acoustics - voidacoustics.com/ #BoilerRoom #LiveMusic #Music #Mix
Their music is impressive, but what really did it for me was the fact that this man wore a turtleneck for an hour long set at a place called "Boiler Room"
they were playing john L for a long time before it was released, they even play an early version of the middle sections during a jam after of schlagenheim at the pitchfork music festival
The singer literally changes the way he sings every song at every live performance. Whatever version of the song you hear at the time you'll never hear again.
these guys have an ability to constantly innovate and improvise. their chemistry is unbelievable, to be able to stay together with the stuff they pull off is something i haven’t seen on this level before.

the first song of this performance is amazed me dude. im really beginner at drumming and idk what to learn to be this good hahaha he is such inspirational drummer like pridgen

jam 2 part 2 is an early version of "Number 5", according to their latest Maida Vale session at the BBC. it's really cool to see these songs develop in real time
they are all great. but the singer/guitarrist and drummer...man, you can just tell they are the backbone of the band, they radiate incredible musicianship
I hope someone is making a playlist of every version of bmbmbm out there. This one is somehow even more notorious than some of the harsher versions- like the kind of stuff you want to listen to in the alleyway
I've never seen such an elaborate long form composition so completely driven by percussion. This drummer is a front man of Freddie Mercury status, without ever uttering a word.
The jam starting to turn into Crow's Perch at 16:30 is really smooth. I almost feel like the singer started playing that riff to signal to the rest of the group that they were gonna really start moving forward and close the jam: "Okay guys, time to play Crow's Perch, remember?" They wrap it up and then Cameron starts playing the bass part of the actual song. Its really great. That lead version of the riff was actually so well placed, I didn't realize what it was at first. I love watching these dudes communicate almost telepathically as they play!
I just saw them in SF a couple of hours ago. Amazing show. So many unexpected jams and grooves. Unfortunately they played so fucking loud that Matt blew his amp and they had to end the show early
People saying this is the future of rock, or that this is math rock, noise rock, post rock, ... obviously don't know about the no wave scene from the 70s. Look up James Chance, The Contortions, early SWANS, Mars, DNA, ... This is pure no wave AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!
I see, I see. I sort of would've agreed because of that no-catchy no-rhythm thing they have mastered, but just saying, it feels like post-punk to me because of the attention to the atmosphere. The atmosphere black midi creates with all that noise and dissonance is what holds the music together? In any case, brilliant music! cheers, friend!
@@doberman_hund there are no wave elements in here specifically, but yeah I wouldn't call too much of their album material no wave. A lot of the jamming section here are super no wave tho.
sort of, theres absolutely a lot of no wave influence but theres also a TON of math and noise rock influence. People say its the future of rock because they combine SO many influential genres that haven’t seen popularity in a long time and do it in a very palatable way.
Not so sure about Future of rock n roll. Noise Rock has been around a long time as well as Post Rock. They just throw some slightly different pairings together. Exciting and fresh sounded, but not ground breaking or new.
46:07 so Hellfire was a thing back before even Cavalcade? Knew Sugar/Tzu went played unlisted at dozens of shows. This is sick. Geordie must write song lyrics way in advance for the tracks!
Hellfire was great as their third album. I'd honestly imagine the next album to be called "Witchcraft" or something with Magician as a 10 minute centrepiece.
@@lizardguy7624 i know right? and the version of John L on that set is crazy too. there are a bunch of crazy improv sections in the performance and theyre all awesome
gotta love that drummer i became big fan of that band in a short time i know they only will produce gold need to see them live, please come to brazil edit: omg, that's my most liked comment. thank you!! also, they were coming to brazil in march (2020), but covid19 came first. :(
There’s someone in the comment section under one of their KEXP performances that was arguing morgan wasn’t a good drummer. I almost shot myself when I read that
@@killme9534 kill me now...I think I briefly peeped that and purposely ignored it lml, anyone saying MS isn't a KILLER drummer is either jealous, or just a troll.
Its took me a while to get into them. However, this has just been my epiphany moment on how seriously good they are! The whole band is incredibly tight!
Seeing how Geordie is saying Hellfire at the end of Ducter kind of gives the idea that they have conceived their third album by 2019 already. And now, there is almost nothing pointing towards their next album which leads me to believe they are done for now. I so much want this not to be true
literally what are you talking about? Him sayin hellfire doesnt mean anything and by your own proclamation, literally anything could be pointing towards their next album if “hellfire hellfire” a throwaway out of context line was the clue all along.
@@franta7294 I think that just shows they were thinking ahead in 2019, like in this video their is already almost finished version of John L, in their 2019 Windmill show there is a jam where they play ending of Sugar/Tzu, I remember in another one of the earlier shows there was an unfinished version of Chondro. But in their 2022 and onward live shows there is nothing pointing towards a future album except maybe for Magician, yet that song sounds so much like a goodbye song in a way Feel Happiness from Swans Are Dead is a goodbye song. I want to believe there are not stopping after only three albums (even though these 3 albums are some of my favorite records of all time already) and there are no official news, too. So, the chances that there are not done are very high, too, but I often think in worst scenarios most of the time and there probably won't be LP4 this year as they are doing those pesky solo efforts (which I like actually)
@@МуродТанжихолов oh theyre definetely not dropping anytime soon, not this year atleast. I think youre being wayy to dramatic about this tho. Theyve been consistently releasing music and touring every year for the past 5 years, a break is completely understandable. Magician also isnt even close to being the only song theyve been performing post hellfire (faster amaranta, askance, lumps, soundcheck, 2 chords). Just because they havent dropped anything in 2 years doesnt mean theyre dunzo,, yall need to chill
@@franta7294 the songs you mentioned feel more like 7-Eleven or Crow's Perch kind of songs rather then fully fleshed album songs. There has been not a single reassuring information about the next album and I'm starting to get nervous. black midi is literally my dream band and they created a new itch in my mind that needs scratching and even if they're planning to release more albums I can't wait for another year. I'm pretty sure I'll be dead by then
Yo, no disrespect but this band has absolutely nothing on any of those bands you named. Those bands were FAR more unique in their time. Those bands, even in the midst of musical chaos, had hooks, melodies and incredible structure to their arrangements. Black Midi aren't "bad" but they're more of a 90's nostalgia art piece. They're more an aesthetic than a band imho.
Josh Jones i agree. But for now... One day they might be more than what those bands could do. Bands like TalkingHead snd Television and Mars Volta also started as young kids with 200% energy and all they wanted was to give what hasn’t been given yet. Eventually they took to mastering their art and craft and sounded like a full, mature band. Black midi looks promising
@@AnodyneHipsterInfluencer dude black midi has mad hooks, think of how many times they repeat the riff in 953 just over and over but at different tempos and shuffles. Its just in a different way than Talking Heads or Television did it
