"Black Mirror" creator discusses show's return

"Black Mirror," the science-fiction series, has released a new season after four years. Ahead of the release of the new episodes, “CBS Saturday Morning” sat down with Charlie Brooker, the creative mind behind the show. Jeff Glor reports.

The interviewer keeps saying Brooker ‘savages’ and is ‘vicious’ toward social media and streaming. Except he isn’t: moral duplicity, insincerity, greed, abuse of technology. Netflix, Amazon, Google, they all do this! It’s called Mirror for a reason. We’re supposed to engage and learn from the show not dismiss it as dystopian

Yeah he said I doubt I will make another series. He said this because he thought it the show was getting to close to reality so it would be hard to make new episodes. IMO the new series isn't as black mirrory as the others, still well written and good still.

The show is genius. Every episode induces such deep thoughts and fear of the future. It is yet so realistic in its depiction of our collective tomorrow. Yes it is bleak but this is where we are and where we are heading!

Early Black Mirror episodes, the ones made for British TV, were streets ahead of most of those that followed on Netflix. I don't know whether the move to Netflix happened to coincide with Brooker running out of ideas, or whether it was the requirement to cater to American audiences that gutted the show of its fearless originality. Either way, the prospect of a new series doesn't excite me in the way it once would have done.

I think if Netflix didn’t give him a lot of money he wouldn’t have continued it for this long on channel 4. I have a feeling he’d rather do something new.

@@spikedmo I'm sure you're right. But honestly, given the disappointment of most of the Netflix Black Mirror episodes, I'd prefer that they hadn't given him the money and he'd been left with time to keep producing his comedy shows for British TV. 🙂

In my opinion the quality of black mirror has taken a nosedive since they took it off of channel 4 and put it on Netflix. I fell like since it went on Netflix, they’ve tried to cater to an American market and the quality has dipped as a result of that. The latest season isn’t good at all

This season they lost their calling. The show is sought after for its ability to display the fears and horrors of current and future technologies not werewolves and demons. Death caused by paparazzi? Done. Death caused by accidentally tripping on a rock? Done. Death by serial killers? Done. Psychological thrillers? Done. They failed at the one thing they were good at.

Charlie you should have labelled Demon 79 and Mazey Day as RED MIRROR and released them separately. BLACK MIRROR is a 'genre' about Technology affecting Humans (based in reality no matter how weird) but you have broken your own genres set of rules by introducing the fantasy of the supernatural. Now instead of deep social comment and warnings you give us 'Schlok Horror!'. Sort it out, son.
