while it was predictable that David would try to seduce Cliff's wife and take over his life, him actually murdering Cliff's entire family was really shocking
@@tomjsmith000to me, it felt like they could’ve put in just a couple more lines that suggested his dissent into madness. I get what they were trying to say, but I could’ve used more buildup
I would have suggested one extra scene of the episode Mazey Day. Where you basically see that Bo has now become a sort of pseudo-celebrity for being the only survivor of the diner massacre. Bo is now being harassed by all the paparazzi, dooming herself to the same fate she had put people like Mazey through.
Let's add to that: let's say that Mazey didn't die, but disappeared in nature. So now you have Bo living through the hell of being chased by paparazzis for being this "sole survivor of the wearwolf attack" (and she still has the pictures to proove it was real), AND being terrified that Mazey will find her someday.
Nah nah nah baby. Beyond the Sea's ending wasn't predictable at all. The cliche would have been Josh Harnett replacing Aaron Paul's character and locking him outside the spaceship. Seeing what he really did was so chilling. I was literally frozen in place at that ending
I thought it was a lot better than the last season. I didn’t feel disappointed when the season ended like last time. Beyond the Sea was definitely too long. I saw that time stamp and thought it’s basically a movie at this point. A bit predictable but great acting which made it tolerable.
People are really forgetting the show wasn’t the “technology is bad show”, but a commentary on human nature. This season focused more on the human nature and Charlie Brooker did NOT disappoint
You're wrong. It not just a commentary on human nature but an exploration of how technology twists or exposes human nature. If it was merely a commentary on human nature it wouldn't be distinct from any of the other commentary on human nature shows
@@lorenzomizushal3980 but the tech wasn’t the thing twisting human nature though. It was the other way around. The show was exposing what would happen if tech falls into certain hands. What choice would they make? How would they use it? It’s just an invention some people would possibly say they wish they had. But we as humanity are exposed once we actually have that power.
@@francoisviljoen4002 i get the sense that they were trying really hard to subvert expectations in every episode. so her being insane would've been too obvious.
It was definitely the best. It was so, so well done. Very original, and acting was fantastic and just generally a lot to delve into there as far as theme, (nod to 1970s slasher films), metaphor (the brown smock, the red motorcycle jacket), female rage turned female empowerment (spurred on by the racist treatment she endures). It was so fantastic.
I wondered why in Beyond the Sea, why didn’t they have the replica in the spaceship instead of the other way around? Course then the entire plot wouldn’t happen
i have been pondering this since the day i watched it and the only thing i can come up with is that due to the length of time and lack of anybody technically qualified for their maintenance, the probability was too high that they’d malfunction and make the voyage meaningless than the probability of either of them keeling over and dying? but srsly, i’m with you. keep the clones up there and let ME be home.
If the replicas are in space, then the real astronauts on Earth could quit at anytime and possibly could not mind control the replicas. Which means expensive spacecraft and technology will be lost.
@@ashley.taylor174 the show did demonstrate that a replica doesnt need to be controlled by the person it looks like, I think it would be safer if more people can “be” there, if something bad happened. Could even have like 4 replica bodies up there in case they need the extra people. I mean it makes sense for the story, and i know I’m nitpicking, I tend to do that, even when I liked the episode
Not gonna lie, compared to season 5, I actually really loved the direction the show was taking. There are so many more horrors to explore than plainly technology, Black Mirror was never *just* about technology. I agree with public consensus that most episodes didn't reach the high of previous episodes, but I'd say it was a solid season with promising future for the show
This was the mildest BM season emotionally. It used to be “hopeless” in a way that made you sit and think and contemplate how humanity could actually be corrupt enough to use technology - twist it to unthinkable levels from what it was originally intended to do. but they have now turned it into “quirky”. Only a couple of scenes from Lock Henry and Beyond The Sea made any kind of emotional impact - and even then they were pretty much “humans are trash” instead of “here’s how humans bastardised technology because they are bound to - it’s their nature”.
@@ashley.taylor174 Sad ending is not the usual BM horror and scary ending that induces the thought “what technology could do to us or worse, what humans can do to us with technology”. It’s a USP that they didn’t go with. “going to a void with a demon” is also technically shown as a happy ending for the protagonist. What’s the point of Black Mirror is we go to demons? That’s why it feels different
the episodes felt kind of undeveloped and totally distant from black mirror's usual tone which made me feel like netflix just took a bunch of concepts they didn't want to turn into whole shows/movies risking profits, so they threw them into black mirror instead since they'd get secure views from fans
I could see where "Loch Henry" was heading pretty early, but it still was gut-wrenching and chilling. I haven't felt like this since maybe season 2 with the "White Bear".
What annoyed me was the lazy writing. I was able to figure out all the plots way ahead of time and I was not the only one. I was a huge fan of black but in the past two seasons the whole thing feels so off. Kinda like very very cheap sci fi. They start strong and along the way of the show it just flops.
I personally disagree with the writing being lazy, I think all the episodes of this season were creative with well written characters, interesting plot points and unpredictable endings. I don’t know how you called the plots of every episode because they wall really inventive. Also I think this and season 5 were just as good as the previous 4, if not better.
@@Tomy_YonI agree Extremely predictable and not nearly as intriguing as the first few seasons (Americanizing the series was its downfall) And removing the "Black Mirror" aspect was completely disappointing
It's because you weren't as inexperienced as you were when the previous seasons came out. Had you watched this at a younger age you might not have figured out the plot.
Also to mention Charlie Brooker intended Red Mirror to be a separate series but it ended up here in S6 as a backdoor pilot where it will be a test run to see if Red Mirror ends up getting made. Although I didn't care for the episode much I do hope it gets made
Joan Is Awful I thought was a pretty good start to the season, not the deepest episode or anything, but I enjoyed the meta comedy aspect of it, and Annie Murphy was really good. Loch Henry was my favourite of the bunch, I loved the dark mystery thriller aspect and the skewering of the true crime genre, and the final twist was a shocking gut-punch moment that I haven't seen from the show in a while. Beyond the Sea had some really good ideas, and both Josh Hartnett and Aaron Paul were excellent, but I think the episode was far too long and really dragged in a few places. Mazey Day was just awful, easily the worst episode of the entire show in my opinion, with very superficial commentary on the vulture-like nature of paparazzi and a twist that comes right out of nowhere. Thankfully the season ended on a pretty strong note with Demon 79, it doesn't really fit in with the overall style and themes of Black Mirror, but I liked the dark yet morbidly comedic tone and the performances of the two leads. Overall, I thought season 6 was a pretty good run of episodes, with only one episode I actively disliked, and the rest ranging from being pretty good to actually great. Not as strong as the first three seasons, but this was still a very inventive and interesting batch of episodes and a marked improvement over the last season
Am I the only one who thinks that "Joan is Awful" is essentially about our self-image and how therapy can help when you've forgotten who you are? I mean, before she sees the therapist, she seems to be quite detached from her life. Then, her partner leaves and she embarks on a journey where she finds out who she really is - literally. The tech/AI stuff is actually just a metaphor here. Because the episode is about how the real Joan ends all her fictive selves, becoming present as her real self. To me, it has a positive message and I like that.
Ok. I am like the kind of person who forgets herself in conversation enough to go on feminist rants that no one asked for. But even I didn’t get toxic masculinity from Beyond the Sea. Also, of course it was predictable that they were gonna switch links and that there’d be sexual tension between David and Lana, but you wanna tell me the rest was predictable?! The hippie cult was predictable? Lana being faithful was predictable? That ending was predictable? It’s a show, so it’s open to interpretation, but I just don’t see it.
I thought the season was great. Black Mirror usually finds a way to convey moralism without being overtly moralistic or signaling. It allows the characters to be human without having to apologize for being so.
I enjoyed every episode. They were all well written. And I love all types of horror. But I'm not really psyched about the move to supernatural horror. You can get werewolves and demons anywhere but sci-fi horror based on around-the-corner tech, not so much.
They actually kinda mentioned it in passing in the beginning. They wanted to see how the human body could withstand space travel. That's why they had physicals every Friday.
I thought it was the best season so far. There were no misfires, as there were at least mediocre episodes in all of the previous seasons. Even one episode, Beyond The Sea, I didn’t like the ending of was compelling throughout, as the script was so good, the performances superb and the soundtrack choices. The last episode left me in tears, through the combination of existential despair, the nostalgia (I’m about the same age as the writer, Charlie Brooker) and the song, Bright Eyes, which brought back memories of contemplating death for the first time as a child, as millions of kids around the world did when they saw the movie Watership Down back in the 1970’s. Brooker manipulated my emotions ruthlessly and I didn’t mind at all. That’s what entertainment is for.
The best episodes left you with a bad taste in your mouth and a lot to think about. Never really got that this season, closest was loch Henry, when he revealed the suicide note was quite the gut punch
Season 6 is Charlie Brooker making everyone rethink what Black Mirror truly is about, especially since he did complain how people kept perceiving Black Mirror is merely the "tech is bad" show. It probably didn't help that last season: Season 5's technology depiction was shallow (notably Smithereens even though the real issue that Smithereens tackles on is simply how society's using social media and not social media itself) and the technology aspect is becoming less significant as a good bunch of technologies that were shown in Black Mirror have already come to reality (basically think of Disneyland's Tomorrowland Problem where Tomrrowland easily gets outdated and loses its appeal cause "tomorrow always comes" like how space travel and television and other innovative technology and vehicles are now a reality). So Black Mirror Season 6 is Charlie Brooker giving everyone a wake up call and making everyone see what Black Mirror truly is by leaving out the futuristic technology aspect that everyone has grown used to and atttached to with Black Mirror that it is easy to lose sight of what the anthology show is really about. Remember how the pilot episode of Black Mirror, The National Anthem, is not really set in some imaginative futuristic setting bringing up whatever technology that's revolved around, but present day at the time tackling on the government's and society's actions, particularly when the princess was taken hostage and the prime minister was demanded to have sex with the pig to release the princess, the technology used in The National Anthem is merely a supplementary, a contributor to the main issue that The National Anthem is showing: the way information is passed on through word of mouth and news and the relationship between the government and public, with social media and television media simply strengthening those issues. So clearly, Black Mirror Season 6 is the show deciding to expand more in its storytelling and not be held back into having to use technology to make bring light to concepts, themes, and issues while being being able to tell a compelling story (best example would be Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too where it doesn't necessarily feel like it needs to make use of AI dolls to drive the point of celebrity exploitation). And a lot moreso when Demon 79 is created as a "Red Mirror" story, which I hope we get more Red Mirror stories as Demon 79 was a good promising start in either Black Mirror now creating 2 different types of stories, Black and Red Mirrors, or Red Mirror being a spinoff to Black Mirror. Fun fact: Charlie Brooker confirmed that Mazey Day is supposed to be also categorized as a Red Mirror story like Demon 79, but labelling Mazey Day a "Red Mirror" story would've ended up giving away the werewolf twist, which honestly all the more shows that the werewolf twist isn't really the real issue with Mazey Day, especially it is meant to be a metaphor with regards to how the paparazzi treats celebrities, rather Mazey Day's story is very shallow, it didn't help the episode was too short, so the whole concept of the paparazzi and celebrity privacy wasn't properly explored and characters weren't really fleshed out, with Mazey Day herself probably the only character who feels like there is some depth as well as Bo, but Bo feels like a missed opportunity to explore her morals, thoughts, and feelings with regards to the paparazzi and celebrity privacy. Mazey Day can only just be summerized as "paparazzis are bad", which honestly they are, but again, the story was shallow.
the supernatural element was definitely the biggest plot twist that took me aback because i’ve always loved how realistic each episode was, that made it really scary. it’s gonna take me some time to adjust to red mirror but i appreciate the complexity the show runners have introduced. as always, a lot of food for thought
I think it was a commentary on modern media instead of technology - how people treat "true crime" as entertainment without caring about the actual victims, and the irony of those two young people trying to make another one of those heartless true crime shows and end up being a true crime show themselves
Joan is Awful: I liked it. But yes, I think criticizing Netflix while being on Netflix lessens the impact. Like when Disney makes fun of itself. Big corporations being self aware of their problems while having no interest in changing just makes my eyes roll. This episode is elevated by the fun cameos and Annie Murphy, who I am just loving a lot lately. Lock Henry: This one's ok. I have no interest in True Crime, so it didn't connect with me much. The way some characters died would be lame in a regular thriller, and it was lame here. But the results of the crimes and where it leaves the protagonist were darkly ironic, and I always appreciate some darkly ironic conclusions. Beyond the Sea: Loved it. It's intriguing, with incredible performances. It's focused on the human condition to fix something about ourselves, and it's using technology to show how bad people can be when they abuse it. Basically, it's quintessential Black Mirror. Calling it "predictable" because we know it will end badly, can literally be said about all Black Mirror episodes, so that's not enough to knock it imo. And no, it actually ends in a way I didn't expect . Mazey Day: Wasn't feelin' this at first, but once it goes were it goes, I popped for the twist. I'm an easy mark for that specific genre. Not very deep or very Black Mirror, so I can understand those who disliked it, but as a good old fashioned monster story, it won me over. Demon 79: The series is pushing more into straight supernatural now with these last two episodes. I could tolerate one, but not both. Too different, a little campy in tone even, which is a personal turn off. And I'd say Knock at the Cabin did the 'sacrifice someone or the world will end' concept better. It's also the most overtly 'message-y" episode which... yay. My least favorite, easily.
It’s a product a television series is a consumable visual media visual media made by Netflix has quotas to fill not necessarily messages to prescribe if it happens that the message based program is making money then it fits their criteria. There’s no such thing as a product that has impact with zero profits in mind even the most pious non profit make something out of it.
Beyond the Sea & Loch Henry were the best of a bad bunch. The rest were lackluster, boring and soulless. Black Mirror traditionally focused on humanity's relationship with technology from a sociological standpoint but the horror episodes which Charlie Brooker dubbed the Red Mirror should've been part of a spin off series rather than release under the Black Mirror imprint.
They say Demon 79 has no technology in it… but the robo dogs are shown. This makes me think this is a simulated reality. I think some people are forgetting the pre-established lore. Demon 79 for example, has MANY hints that these characters are perhaps being simulated. We know it’s possible. The white bear sign is the biggest tip-off. And given the technology introduced in “Joan is awful” I interpreted red mirror as the black mirror of their universe. A white bear situation but with a cookie in a simulation. Alternatively, it could be in one of the after-death simulations like San Junipero but a hell version.
Black mirror was innovative when it first came out but the concept they created was so popular that many others were inspired and because of that it was harder to do new episodes without changing the concept. When you except the change in concept the season is very good.
I don’t know what you guys are talking about because season 6 is a reflection of season 1 -2. You guys must only watched season 3 due to the fact that you guys think black mirror is only about technology and creating its own universe. Plenty of episodes were set in real time without advance technology. Black mirrors went down hill starting at season 3 just like Rick and Morty. Season 6 is black mirror coming back to its home roots after being lost at season 4 -5.
wouldn't say season 3 is where Black Mirror went downhill though, best that season 4 is where Black Mirror started to get iffy in its stories, most especially season 3 is where Black Mirror peaked, it had Nosedive, Playtest, Shut Up and Dance, San Junipero, and Hated in the Nation.
I hardly found Beyond the Sea predictable. Sure I could get taking his place as his replica but I didnt expect him to kill his family and just sit there with him... for years... it was chilling.
I know right nothing to do with toxic masculinity whatsoever one guy basically lost his life. His family went crazy. Try to take another man’s family and the other one was just so far up his ass. He didn’t know what the fuck was going on.
@@102wolfking it's not one that's ridiculous It's why Beyond the Sea is considered the best season 6 episode for other people since there are different ways of how this story's interpreted, toxic masculinity isn't something that's farfetched given how the story went. True, it's not one to easily jump to conclusion, especially as this particular story is an allegory to the lockdown quarantine during the COVID pandemic, but it's also one you wouldn't past it and simply adds a lot more depth to the story.
I liked the season but i really did not like Demon 79. I was shocked to read that's everyone's favorite. I think it was the worst episode of all the seasons.
Imo Season 6 was a throwback to earlier seasons. I initially enjoyed this season, and even had to step away after some episodes to "clean my palate" of what I just watched with cartoons, lol.
"To feel like a man again"??? I'm guessing this line wasn't written by a man, I didn't see anything in the space episode to suggest josh hartnett was trying to feel like a "man" again by hitting on cliffs wife. He was just messed up, what's with the whole "masculinity" angle here? Yes they were dudes but I felt like you could swap them out for women and have the exact same story. Their gender didn't seem to be important per se
Yeah, I’d interpreted as him missing human connection and feeling sorry for himself. He experienced a huge trauma and formed an unhealthy attachment to Cliff’s wife. And Cliff wasn’t necessarily concerned about her safety bc he had no reason to think (JH’s character, forgot his name) was dangerous at that point in the story. I didn’t interpret Cliff as toxic at all, just a bit cold (didn’t touch his wife, uses corporal punishment). I wondered if he’d embellished how Lana felt about (again forgot his name) but I think that was justified considering he’d done the dude a favor just for him to turn around and hit on his wife.
@@lauren_sunshine I reached the same interpretation when I watched it, it's about how isolation and loneliness breeds a desire and desperation for intimacy and connection, and how quickly that can spiral into obsession. The toxic masculinity thing is definitely an interesting interpretation, but it's not one that jumped out at me when I watched it
You are better then this black mirror. . . In my opinion they only did one episode of season 6 be it a bit lackluster but is was a black mirror ep none the less . . .it’s like they picked someone out of Portland to direct this. . . I MEAN THEY EVEN CHANGED THE SONG THEYVE BEEN using for seasons now. . . I mean come on! Werewolves?? An affair? I literally quit that episode it pissed me off so much. . .
We are in a time of crazy technological growth. Yet Black Mirror of all shows doesn’t really Critique it. A bit about deep fakes, and technological isolation, not really touching AI.
Every episode felt like it was trying to say something profound about something but lost the message along the way. At least with Mazey Day though it was corny, they stuck to the message till the very end when she was still taking pictures of Mazey and commodifying her to her death. The earlier seasons' episodes really felt more concise and the endings were more satisfying.
I loved this season, with my favourite episodes being beyond the sea and demon 79. All the episodes of this season were creative with well written characters, interesting plot points and unpredictable endings. I think this and season 5 were just as good as the previous 4, if not better.
Predictable? He killed his entire family! I did not predict that. The 1st 3 episodes were pure gold and the last 2 stained the legacy of Black Mirror with their profound mediocrity
The creator said it’s never been a “tech is bad show” it’s a “people are bad show” or something like that, so it hasn’t really changed. It’s just different lmao. If that makes any sense
Did she even watch demon 79? Because she said that even though she killed three people the world ended up burning anyway. And that’s kinda true but one person didn’t count because they were a murderer.
unpopular opinion: Mazey Day isnt half bad. pls stop hating on it just because it’s a simple story. doesn’t have any plot twist, not mind blowing bla bla. look closer. its still a nice subvert of expectation with the werewolf direction.
It's definitely different this season. Didn't feel a lot like black mirror. Season 3 was probably my favourite season. But I don't know.. I still really liked this season. Mazey Day was a bit wierd. But all the other ones were still really good.. the horror, the introspection!
I really like this season 6 especially demon 79 and joan is awful. I like how both took on the theme of female anger and rage. Beyond the Sea was just so extreme. Really wasn’t expecting such a violent finale.
We really enjoyed this season, very fun and it doesn't always have to be super clever and meaningful. Didn't interpret the space one like you did, and I really liked the b movie werewolf episode
Personally, twists are nice but maybe knowing what’ll happen and hoping it won’t is worse. Telling the characters mentally not to do the thing desperately only to look on as an helpless bystander.
Episode 1 : Joan is Awful .... is awful. The worst episode of the bunch and one of the worst of all the seasons. Smart ideas yet very boring episode. Episode 2 : Loch Henry..... this is a good episode. It has suspense, plot twists, gore and has that weird British flavour to it. Episode 3 : Beyond the Sea ....... another solid episode. Fun to watch. Episode 4 : Mazey Day..... this one is gold. My favourite of the season. It has a sort of 80s horror movie vibe to it yet with the added disturbing habit of some characters of obsessively taking pictures as if digging for gold . Episode 5 : Demon 79....... very good episode too. Unfortunately its impact was sort of by the release , not long ago of the newest (to date) M. Shiamalan movie Knock at the Cabin . I'm sure everyone involved in the making of this episode, when they watched Shiamalan's movie and its similarities to the work they were involved in were sort of " ... that mother effer ! "... Solid season.
Thought this season was a little lackluster in the storylines and plot twists. The loch Henry one was pretty good but besides that it was predictable and just felt forced. Really did try to like it but couldn’t.
I liked Joan is Awful and Locke Henry was a good critique on True Crime. Beyond the Sea so far was my least favorite I loved the acting and the 60s aesthetic but I felt David resulting to murder felt like to out of character. Yes I know he became but there were no clues that he would resort to murder. They should have just let him sneakingly take over Cliff life but that’s just me and I’ll let you know of the other two episodes once I see them
black mirror episode mazey day is my lease favorite episode of season 6 because twist bo and other paparzza find out mazey day is secretly a werewolf it doesn't like feel black mirror more like something tale from crypt than black mirror black mirror was more like thriller and Scify than horror.
I think you missed a huge point that in Demon 79, all of it could have been because of Nida's mental illness. It's possible it was all in her head - more evidence points to that.
@@signalfire15 I'm not going to get into a big explanation as I am not a clinical therapist. You can research it but almost all the clues lead to it was in her head and not real.
Mazey Day is the worst episode of the whole show, even worse than the Miley Cyrus episode. It had so much potential and just squandered all of it with the weird ass werewolf twist
Black Mirror lost its spark because it changed from doing shocking things no one would expect to doing episodes that are very targeted towards a young audience. For example, they used two popular TikTok songs in the 6th season (Supermassive Black Hole from the Muse was used in the Mazey Day episode... that's the Twilight baseball scene that people on TikTok make fun of... and then there's Rasputin by Boney M. in the Demon 79 episode which is probably one of the most popular dance/thirst trap TikTok songs to exist)
Idk but this season kinda sucked. All other seasons were awesome. I feel like the played it safe this time, previous seasons were f'ed and that was awesome. 1st episode was lame, second was good but wish it was darker. Salma Hayek ❤️🔥
i miss uk versions of this show... this is so wash out-the story are predictable, human nature s not explore in the deep way that make you think , doesn't show the way that our wold is changing.. last 2 episode are so bad wanna be horror supernatural show...great show turn bed.
