Wait if hes only mean to ai(that somehow doesnt reset) how does does that make him a toxic fanboy? Itd make sense if he was taking it out on the community of fans, also lumping in sexual privilege, idk too many different ideas trying to fit together.

Idk if I agree if the kissing part was about optimism and looking forward. It made me feel more like they were critiquing how women were all used in the original series as sex objects (to varying degrees). The fact he kisses all of them highlights how the captain has many escapades with all the beautiful women on the show and, as the suave, successful protagonist, sets a cultural example for manhood or whatnot. But that’s just my two cents.

Lauren Bennett plus the removal of the sexual organs shows how he doesn't understand the real life mechanics of sex. He only sees the kissing and assumes that's what his power affords him without realising what meanings are behind it and how intrusive it can be

Yeah I was thinking a similar thing. Like Westworld it really calls into question whether or not it is ok to do terrible things in video games. I know people who play games like GTA for the express purpose of being able to without consequence torture NPCs and essentially role play as a serial killer. In what context is and isn't that ok? Can people with these sorts of urges seek out a safe outlet or are they required to deny themselves and figure out a way to somehow not have them?

You know, I do think Nanette was a little interested in him romantically. Which is why his choice to entrap and torture her virtual copy but keep his distance from real Nanette is even more messed up. If he simply got to know her and treated her well, he may be able to build a rewarding friendship or more. Instead, his need for control and self-victimization robs him of that and hurts others.
@SportBrotha
@SportBrotha 6 лет назад
I agree, I can't recall the episode but I seem to remember more evidence that she initially had a romantic interest him. The scene where she denies it comes off as a little insincere and embarrassed, which adds irony to the story. If he had just gone out of his way to be genuinely nice instead of nice by hiding his contempt for everyone, he could have broke out in real life.

I watched this episode again last night, and am glad go see a great analysis of it! I also noticed Daly and Shania Lowry are the only 2 crew members to wear a red shirt, and are the only 2 who undergo direct bodily harm. There’s also the fact that Daly only breaks the Shatner voice when he’s upset, controlling people, or flustered when Nannette takes off her clothes. And the subtle sugary drinks he consumes (vanilla latte, chocolate milk with a straw) symbolize a lack of emotional development. So many layers to this episode!

I second Lauren's recommendation as it was exactly what I was thinking of when seeing Robert is drinking the milk. Fantastic Analysis. I loved this episode. I didn't even realize that Nanette not wanting to sleeping Robert and only being interested in his code, was the reason why he brought her to the USS Callister. Now that seems obvious, but that went over my head, while watching. Great Job! I love your videos.
@Larknok1
@Larknok1 5 лет назад
... but that's not the reason he brings her to the USS Callister. It doesn't even make sense as a plausible reason: Robert doesn't have sex or include genitals in his world. At most -- at most -- he wants to larp with and kiss her. I think people are super-imposing certain political narratives onto this episode...
@overlydramaticpanda
@overlydramaticpanda 4 года назад
The fact that he overheard her denying sexual interest in him in the real world is absolutely the reason he “uploads her” into his VR world. It’s explicitly stated that everyone there is there purely as punishment for things their real-world counterparts did(n’t) do. Daley is getting along incredibly well with Nanette...right up until he eavesdrops on that conversation - watching his smile fade as he listens should tell you all you need to know. He doesn’t even attempt to talk to her in the real world after he’s got her DNA. The sexlessness nature of his VR world serves to highlight his hypocrisy and emotional immaturity. At one point in the episode, he espouses the “Space Fleet code” even as he’s trampling all over it with regards to his treatment of the others. He expects a tame “60s”-style sexual reward in the form of kissing from all the available women in his world after each successful “mission” but refuses to truly admit the inherently sexual nature of that reward. Daley isn’t asexual - if he were, Nanette’s “sexy female” routine by the lake would have done absolutely nothing. He was just too repressed to know how to express his desires in a healthy way, both within the game and in his real life.
@mish375
@mish375 2 года назад
@@Larknok1 You have to remember that he's emotionally stunted and has a victim complex. Nanette rejecting him to the co-worker angered him and he took it personally. Even though she never did or said anything inappropriate. She never made any advances but Robert was so desperate that he assumed any attention was sexual. In his eyes he was punishing her for something she didn't do wrong

Daly's avatar would've died when his brain died though. He would've died of starvation at some point, assuming that noone would wonder why he's been absent from work for so long, though someone would eventually be onto it. Also, I think all this pent up rage he takes out on these characters are not just a result of his petty grudges, but also his long held grudge against Walten, one he could've easily fixed had he asserted some dominance in real life. No, Robert's greatest problem is his inability to stand up for himself, and rather than changing that in reality he chose to play god in an alternate reality just to feel better about himself. His petty attitude is perhaps his most disgusting personal trait, and yet the most hidden.

Love this, saw a lot of analysis in other places about sentient code and whether it's morally wrong, but it was essentially the White Christmas reactions again. Your video actually goes into the toxic narrative of the 'nerd' which I think was more the point of this episode
@LucioBeltrami
@LucioBeltrami 6 лет назад
Other analyses you read focused *again* on sentient code because this episode brought that theme up *again*. You are right, USS Callister is more about nerd behaviour and sexist plots, but imho those are not Black Mirror linked topics. I found this episode mildly funny but completely out of tone with the series, not thought provoking, and using a technological twist already analyzed (and far better) in White Christmas. In addition to this, using DNA to create a digital double with the memory of things happened the same morning is a trick that could work in a Disney cartoon, not here.
@electricbluetiramisu3713
@electricbluetiramisu3713 6 лет назад
I thought the tone was meant to be discordant with typical Black Mirror episodes because, unlike the majority of episodes, most of the narrative takes place in a utopia such as with San Junipero. But the difference is that USS Callister is only a utopia for Daly and of course the catch is that he ends up murdered by his own toxic, self-serving creation. Again, similar to San Junipero. The obvious difference being that the death is consensual in San Junipero (I'm sure I'm mispelling this title sorry) but not in USS Callister, which is a fitting contrast given the sexist tropes this episode confronts.
@iansneddon2956
@iansneddon2956 5 лет назад
@@electricbluetiramisu3713 Regarding his creation only being a utopia for Daly, who else should it be a utopia for as he is the only person in the creation? I get a bit put off with how toxic gets tossed around a lot - I guess in this case as an excuse to write off and justify killing mentally ill people like Daly. We don't usually approve of such things. Daly is a weak emotionally stunted and desocialized man who grew from a weak emotionally stunted and desocialized bullied kid (at least that part seems clear to me who had to struggle through the consequences of being desocialized as a kid). The damage this has done to him over the years leaves him unable to properly relate to other people and to retreat into a world of his own creation - and trying to hide his weakness and inability to model basic masculine traits behind the total control he gives himself in the game to give himself the illusion of power and superiority.

I think this episode was also a direct parody of the original series episode, Charlie X where a super powered man joined the enterprise. Aside from direct references to the episode like him turning a woman in a blue uniform into a faceless monster, torturing another woman for not sharing his feelings, and turning one character into a monster, the general premise of both episodes deal with a creepy man child who harasses his female co-workers and worships Kirk torturing the crew of a spaceship for extremely petty reasons. Also both antagonists in the end both meet a fucked up fate as Charlie is forced into isolation by the effervescent god like beings who gave him his powers despite his desperate pleas for help and him claiming they horrifically isolated him

I especially liked pointing out the difference between how the stories used to be told ( subtle racism, stereotypical roles) and how they are told now, in a more modern and open-minded way. Also, I think the immaturity of Rober that you showed in this video is additionally underlined by his food choices ( pizza, chocolate milk - all what a middle schooler would consume while left alone home for ) and the way he treats people that he has some kind of power over ( not only the people stuck on Callister but also the pizza delivery guy). Once again, excellent analysis. There's one thing i'm not sure though. I don't think Daly hates Nanette for saying she's not interested. I think it's more because of her change of attitude when she brought him the coffee. First she came in, all smiling and asked him if he wanted a coffee. He seems super happy and not used to the attention. Then he overhears Shania tell her to stay aways from him. When she comes back she barely smiles at him and swiftly goes to her desk, looking a little awkward. Still isn't a reason to do any of what he did, but i don't think it's simply because she wasn't sexually attracted to him.

I think USS Callister lacks the moral dilemmas that most of the other Black Mirror episodes have because the real life versions of the people he clones aren't affected by anything he does to their virtual selves. If the real life people were somehow affected by his actions in the virtual world the episode would have hit the way it was intended.

It's a modern day Outer Limits or Twilight Zone type show available on Netflix, with each episode telling a different self contained scifi story (mostly) unrelated to the others. Most of the time they have severely dark or disturbing endings, so be prepared for that going in, especially if you start with the very first episode of season one. That's often the hardest one for people to deal with, but it's also the least like the rest of the series if you ask me. Personally I'd recommend starting with the episode "15 Million Merits".

Isn't the ending of that episode much darker, as presuming Daly dies, either Nanette real live version will be accused of the murder or the update will be blamed. Either way the company is likely to go bust and the online world will be destroyed.
@MeloraCarabas
@MeloraCarabas 6 лет назад
There is no reason to believe that Nanette caused him to risk staying online in update time. So either the company will get a bad reputation for having bad safety controls or if Robert changed his version of the game to override these protocals it will be declared a suicide. Which in technical sense it was.

I've seen this episode a few times. And it might be darker then supposed. Daly's character might just be a rapist. In his virtual world he has complete control and power over everyone's free will. He's forced them to comply or else. If the psychological motivation of a rapist, isn't sex, but rather control over others, Daly is exactly that. Why did he remove their sex and whatnot? Because his control is the gratification. He's doing it both the male and female characters.

I liked USS callister but I have some issues as well. There are some holes in the narrative perspective. When you copy DNA you don't really copy soul of its characters. And there's another thing. Real life Cole could be accused of murder.
@oisinkelly8407
@oisinkelly8407 6 лет назад
The Last Gen Console Gamer yeah I can stretch my imagination to futuristic science explains the DNA thing, but Cole not worry ING about her other self being convicted for murder seems like a total plot hole.
@thelastgenconsolegamer696

copying dna does not really copy one to another with memories and other attributes. It copies appearances not soul and what not. I could understand if robert daly copied the head piece of others to make into virtual character that he can play or torture.. I think the writers didn't really gave a deep thought on this story. It did made sense and I could see why the storyline had to go. I didn't really think that the ending was happy as anyone says. A lot of online games would shutting down their server within few months. Without their CTO some games don't last.

@grumbel45

The whole DNA thing just felt like lazy writing. It doesn't make any scientific sense, not even in a future scifi setting, but as far as the show is concerned, they were certainly meant to be 100% identical virtual copies of that person, not just Sims character inspired by those people. As for the episode itself, I feel Daly's character was criminally underdeveloped, he turned into a very generic bad guy rather fast and none of his motivation for putting people in the simulation made much sense outside of Walton. It's also not clear what he wanted to get out of the simulation to begin with. If we just wants to LARP, I am sure he could find people actually interested in it (or just use AI bots), reusing your unwilling coworkers feels like a terrible choice. If he wants to torture people, a fun little StarTrek knock-off doesn't sound all that tortuous to begin with. Also worth keeping in mind that the "happy ending" changes very little for the characters, they got rid of Daly, but they are still in a StarTrek simulation, something they could have had simply by cooperating with Daly. And simulation story aside, the way Cole reacted and ended up (unintentionally) murdering Daly, all just to avoid the release of some pretty mundale nude photos also doesn't reflect all that well on her character. Overall the episode was a fun spin on Charlie X and other similar Star Trek episodes, but as a social commentary I found it to be drastically underdeveloped.

IMO the episode was going through copying there soul as in all of the characteristic of its being. I could understand the modeling of its person by duplicating dna data.

Very nice and well-stated analysis of the episode. I really loved the debunking of the toxic fanboy from Black Mirror. Also something I want to add. At the end of the episode Nanette gives us a last glance. At first I thought that it is that she won and now she and her crew are happy to cruise the vast universe of this simulation. However because this is Black Mirror, was it because she now could be a modern- era Daly and treat the crew the same way he did? It's just a thought, after all, we rarely see a happy ending in Black Mirror.

I couldn't disagree more. The problem is a person unwilling to exert themselves. So when he had power and no real equal, he becomes a maniacal god being. This episode only becomes about the fan boys if you see them as an enemy. It's clear from the beginning its about the god complex. The way everything is organized, and his distemper about how long it will take to synthesis her dna into a character in the game. As an analysis, it's not too bad, but you're reaching in order to place your own twist on it to discredit others.

It's interesting that we root for these AI and that a real person dies, even though in the real world Daly didn't actually hurt anybody. Think of people who behave like he does in the real world, and I mean only what you would know about that person, not how they are in their own apartment. A quiet guy who shows up to work and isn't horrible to anyone. Also keep in the mind, the boss IS a shitty person in the world that matters, the real world. The point I'm getting at is, would we rather Daly be this horrible torturer in the real world, or in this digital space? I think there's more commentary behind this episode that this video didn't talk about, in terms of how the writers were much more clever in holding a mirror to us fanboys. I'm not smart enough to eloquently summarize it, but it's something along the lines of how us fans can easily lose sight of what's real, and care too much about characters that don't actually exist. This based on us hating Robert Daly just because he decides to have anger management in his own digital space, not harming real people, and how we root for the boss because his son was killed (no he wasn't, his son was never harmed). Oh and this is a boss who takes credit for Daly's work.
