I, myself, have nerve damage in my fingers. I can't feel the pick between my fingers, so I drop it occasionally. This looks like a nice solution.

These picks have become my number 1 go-to while playing electric guitar. They are my “gateway” from playing with traditional picks to doing more finger picking. Glad to see them getting such a warm shoutout from Phil!

I bought a couple of these in late January. They are the best thumb pick I’ve ever encountered. Cole is a good man. Dealing with him was like encountering an old friend and reconnecting. Not only do I use this with banjo and mandolin, but I’ve started using it and incorporating it with my own bass guitar style.

I ordered one of these picks, and am pleased. The fit is superior to other finger picks I've tried. Different thicknesses would be nice, however the inventor is onto something.

This is a great idea for those with hand injuries, or students learning to use a thumb pick. I have tried thumb picks before; to me, it's like wearing a suit and tie at the gym while trying to workout...it's extremely inhibiting to my natural movement. I should add that I did not learn to play with a thumb pick, but tried using one 33 years after I had already begun my journey with music and guitar. This is a cool idea, but I will stick to playing with my fingers or hybrid picking with my "normal" picks. Rock on, Phil. 🐰🎸🎶🤘

It's so funny that you are doing this now. While on lockdown I've been playing way more and I actually revisited the Phil McKnight pick pack from a few years back. I tried them all again and realized that it's now time to move to the Jazz 3. I ordered a bunch of different Jazz 3's and settled on the Ultex for Electric and the Carbon Fiber for Acoustic. That pick pack you sent out was so great. I kept all the picks in one bag and don't plan to ever get rid of it.

Mr. McBride thank you 🙏🏾 for inventing this pick and Mr. McKnight thank you 🙏🏾 for introducing it to me. I always used flat picks for guitar and played with my fingers on bass up until I was diagnosed with MS and then had to get carpal tunnel surgery and ulnar surgery on my right hand and arm. This left me with only 100% motion, sensation, and agility in the right thumb and wrist only. I have been using Dunlop thumb picks but they become uncomfortable within 10-15 minutes. I will be ordering some of these marvelous picks today and God bless you both for seeing a need for those who still love to play even in the face of physical challenges.

Thanks for illustrating this for us Phillip. As one of those who was unfortunate enough to have suffered a spinal injury, this device is just what I need. I have trouble playing anywhere near the way I used to, with the numb fingers issue that you spoke of. Basic strumming and power chords get kind of boring after a while, and I believe that this pick will allow me to get back closer to the way that I used to be able to play. I am happy to be a subscriber of yours, and I recommend your channel to every player that I meet.

man, that is a brilliant design! fwiw, glad you mentioned the boiling water thing, but also, a Tommy Emmanual interview on the thumb pick, he said what he does and have like 5 or 6 always in his pocket each a little differnt size, as a thumb can change sizes each day by a little bit of fluctuation, anyway, wish i would of known these things 45 years ago, myself, i got used to using the edge of my thumbnail, so i always have a natural thumb pick, but also, since i adopted that style, i never really learned how to really use a flat pick well, and man, what a invention you just showed us, what a great invention!

I did buy the 3 pack, I do suffer from both disabilities from arthritis and premature degenerative disk disease in my back and at 65 it's torture. The pick isn't great nor bad, it's just different. The clipped spring is different allowing me to play with a lighter flat pick without breaking the pick as with a lighter thumb pick will break or worse, catch the string - leaving your thumb pick to dangle on the string you last played. 3 for $20 is not a bad price and if my hands weren't deformed as now I'd probably would be more interested in them. Thank you Phillip McKnight for interest and honesty when you send the message out to know your gear!

Great Idea, I bought a 3 pack too. In my case I will need to modify the pick since my arthritis causes my thumb to splay so the pick tip is not where it should be when clamped to my thumb. I plan to cut/grind it to see if I can get it to work for me.

I know this is an old video, but I wanted to give a shout out to these Black Mountain picks. I am a self taught guitar player and one of my many bad habits is the fact that I learned to play without using a pick. I always told myself that plenty of great guitarists didn't use a pick and while I have adapted well and am very comfortable in playing most of the blues and honky-tonk country I grew up with, when I decided to start branching out and learning more styles, I found that my unique fingerstyle just wasn't working for playing faster and heavier types of music (I'm talking EVH kind of stuff). I have tried to learn to use a traditional pick and have gotten better at it, but after playing so many years without one, it just feels foreign to me to hold on to a pick while playing. If I do not constantly concentrate on holding on to the damn thing, it will fall on the floor mid song no matter what I do. I've tried using thumb picks, but they just do not work well for learning to sweep pick or even just faster picking in general. What I wanted was a traditional pick that would stay attached to my thumb whenever I release pressure with my index finger, and my friends, this pick does exactly that. I'm probably an edge case scenario, but these little things have opened up a whole new world for me as a guitar player and I can't thank them enough.

Got a starter set coming in the mail...cause after 50 years of playing...mostly electric...I just discovered last week that a thumb pick for me is a game changer...these BlackMountain could be just what the doctor ordered. Basically...I've always been a decent finger picker....a so-so flat picker. Hybrid picking (with on two digits left to finger pick) is a challenge. With a thumb pick I have 3 fingers to pick and I'm so much more accurate on the bass notes with a thumb pick (surprised me).

I’m an 8 string guitarist and am HEAVILY influenced by hybrid picking and finger style players like Billy Gibbons and Tosin Abasi and I use these things RELIGIOUSLY. They are absolutely the best thing that has ever happened to me and changed the way I play. The fear of dropping picks is gone and I can go from pretty much any style of playing without having to worry about it, it’s my go to pick and I recommend this to EVERYONE who plays guitar. Even if you have no plans of doing finger style/hybrid picking just the fact you’ll never drop a pick again as long as you get the right size is worth the price in it if it’s self!

Hey man if you don't get along with this design I stumbled in to V-picks recently. At first I couldn't believe there was a pick that was going for $4 a pop but goddamn if I can't stop using it lol. Something about the acrylic makes it stick to your fingers somehow.

I have tried dozens, this is the best and most useable thumbpick I have tried in my 30 years of playing. They also just introduced a model with a "Jazz III" type of pick, which I like even more. These picks can still be modified with hot water, like other designs, to make fit more comfortable and to make slight changes to your pick angle. I use these for fingerpicking primarily, but the design allows for reasonable accurate flatpicking as well. I use very thick picks (4-6mm) for most lead playing, as I have arthritic hands and I find the mass of these allows for a relaxed grip without dropping the pick, and improves tone, but I can also see that with practice these thumbpicks could do the trick. Worth a try in my opinion, I'm enjoying these, where I normally throw other designs away quickly.

Hello, Another old guy here. Could not get this pic to work strumming, too hard, no give. So I spent hours filing with a 1" wide nail file. My favorite pic is a Dunlop green .053 pic, Why the pic says .053? I measured the pic with a micrometer, .020. I filed and filed. Then put a chamfer on the around the end or it hangs up. The mountain pic is tapered so care needs to be taken, stay away from the spring. I also shortened it a bit, found it too long. Works great. I hope Black Mountain comes out with thinner, even angled a bit. That would be great. Thanks for your time..
