i rescued a bmc. My first dog. tore the place up.She was still a pup. Still loved her. Yes long walks , Chase deer, squirrel, and bunny s. Great with little dogs and kids. Good swimmer. I hike her almost everyday. She is my little "big" girl. After 6 years she beat cancer. Going strong. I would not know what to do without her. Remember Amber Dog. She is everything. Best breed. Best Dog.

My BMC is the best dog that I've ever had. He is fiercely protective and loyal to his family, but does amazing in social interactions with people and other dogs. Even though he's only a medium sized dog, he'll out run and out wrestle dogs that are twice his size. Definitely not for new dog owners or neglectful owners, but they are worth every bit of the work they need.

She is my emotional support dog. Excellent with social interactions just as you stated. Almost never barks. I saved her from a life in a dog pen. She knows this. The sweetest dog. I will have pups in another year or so. Very sensitive animal and just LOVES THE WOODS! So much like a hound. She is a 3rd gen Florida yard dog with Red Bone hound and very little Terrier bulldog. But she has that famous face which is quite similar to the images shown.

@@BrianCarnevaleB26 You are so right about the barking. Mine will not bark unless there is a bear or cayote near. And if I get up and go outside, he tears down the stairs into the wood and protects me. And yes, the woods, these dogs live for the woods.

we love our BMC, super hard worker, very loyal to my wife and me, and gets along with our 2 labs but is now leader of the pack, super intelligent, and understands many words, he runs 2 miles 3 times a day, hunts our 56 acres and stays within the boundary, he is the only dog we have had that looks you in the eye forever, a piercing look into you soul and you into his, and when he snuggles next to you it a heart to heart bonding closeness that no other dog has given us, a really once in a lifetime dog, and very protective, we love him to bits.

On my second BMC. First one I was a new dog owner --had dog growing up but never raised one myself. If you want a good dog you have to put in the work. Carl was well behaved and a genuinely great familly dog. If you are willing to put in the work training basic puppy manners you can get one even if you are a first time owner. As with most breeds it's all about the work the owner puts forth. Awesome breed. Everything I want in a dog and deadly handsome, too!

I found a saddle back (black and tan) BMC in the middle of Florida about 10 years ago in a Walmart parking lot. We brought her (Maggie) home to South Broward and realized she was pregnant. She had six beautiful puppies, found homes for all of them, but kept one male, Austin. Lost him after seven years from cancer. Lost the mom, too, to cancer. Loved them so much. Still miss them!! We have two more dogs now, a black and white pit bull and the other one, I don't know what she is, part grey hound maybe - super high energy. Austin was honey-colored, classic black mask and tongue. I guess I am telling you guys this because I am very, very concerned over the processing of "kibble" dog food and what is in it. We feed our dogs now "human grade" food. I cook brown rice that lasts two days and use rotisserie chicken from Costco to mix with it. The chickens are cheap enough. Do some research on what is in dog food, and you may want to change the diet. God Bless all you dog lovers!!

I am so happy I found this video. Warning: Long post.....I've had a black mouth cur for almost 4 years now, thinking he was just a mutt. Showed up as a stray pup you could hold with one hand, and took him in. Only in this last week was I told what breed he was, and after watching this video,,,,well, it nails him to a T. He is the most gorgeous animal I've ever seen. 55 pounds, lean and all muscle. I hike with him all the time in the mountains of north GA (Rabun Gap area) and Dawson County, and never understood why that dog hunted the entire time. A 2 mile rugged hike or a 10 mile rugged hike. He was relentless, and it is an absolute gift to see the dogs doing what they love. I've seen him in high grass sniffing out a rabbit, motionless minutes, and suddenly bound 3 feet straight up in the air without taking a step, to pounce on the rabbit. While not bragging in any way because it broke my heart, he killed an adult deer in a creek one time. But he is excellent with people and other dogs, though he's been in two dog fights, one on him and the other on the neighbor dog. Great around children. Best dog ever, except mine has seizures, which is hard to watch and for which I refuse to put him on medicine at this time, and Rascal sheds more than any dog I've ever had, lol. Wouldn't trade him for the world.

i hear you...i'm in a suburban area with a big yard with lots of building going on; the rats are being forced out and my girl is in her glory. She will sit on the back porch or on her spot on the patio and wait, wait, wait for so very long and then pounce ! The first week we got her seven years ago( before my husband passed ) she nailed a groundhog; i was horrified....but as my husband pointed out "she did it quick and clean and it's her property now"... she is great with children, tolerates adults, is more relaxed with adults who are family (don't ask me how she knows the difference) Our girl doesn't like other dogs; our fault; we took her to a big off leash dog park and she had a good time at first, but later on a dog walker came in with a six dog pack and , well, our girl didn't expect what happened; they thought they owned the turf and nailed her. Sorry to hear about the seizures that's a heart breaker...and i could stuff twenty pillows with what this girls sheds in a week !

Why wouldn't you want to start medication for the seizures? I'm epileptic,Grandmal seizures and I take medication(Depakote) since I was 12.. without treatment they get worse, and cause brain damage.. seizures are a serious thing.. please look into it for the health of your dog,not saying anything one way or the other, just saying consider it

We acquired a pair of siblings from the Ladner line. These are the most exceptional dogs I’ve ever witnessed. The level of grit and tenacity, coupled with their incredible loyalty and devotion to their pack is unparalleled. If you live in a place where you routinely cross paths with large bears, mountain lions and other predators, rest assured - your BMC will protect you and yours, or die tryin’. Highly recommended for serious dog owners, with very specific needs. Having said that, they are just as happy shadowing my husband in our orchard, as they are going after game. Beautiful dogs, in every way. Love love love my BMCs.❤️

We have a BMC. I rescued this dog female from a horrible environment. She had two previous litters of dogs in the kennel and was pushed around a lot. She melted my heart and I took her outta that he'll hole. Now my mistake has been we did not train her very much but at 3 we are doing our best to get her to act normal. Very powerful dog. Excellent woods dog can hunt any game it scents or sees

My BMC is a dream dog. She practically taught herself. We would say, "Good "fill in word here" when we saw her doing that behavior and now if we ask her to do that she does it. She's 1.5 years old with almost perfect recall and has had that from when we got her 7 weeks. At the dog park she can be in a group of dogs where 2 start fighting and if I say, "hold," she will stop and walk out. To say she's the smartest dog I've seen is an understatement. And she loves to be on trail. We do 1-2 hour hikes about 4 days a week and I likely hold her back for exploring. Her biggest "flaw" is that she's such a nanny dog to my 5 year old that she can be overly protective about him. Definitely a breed that requires exercise, but I honestly couldn't have picked better qualities in a dog.

i wish i had gotten my girl that young. She came to us (my husband has passed since) when she was a year old and had been at a foster home for six months to socialize her; she was found abandoned with three other dogs tied to trees. She is incredibly smart, very intuitive to what i'm asking of her, great with children (cautious of adults) . she will wait at an open door until released unless it is the back door where she Know There Will Be Rats/Squirrels/Etc.. She will jumps through hoops and be happy to do it, unless she is on the scent of a kill; the first week we got her she nailed a groundhog. Her foster mom said her rescues farm is eight acres fenced in and the dogs will hunt and once they get the prey drive sparked, it's a done deal. But she is my protector and best buddy; we keep each other on our toes!

Just adopted a male, brindle and he is all energy, his intelligence exceeds expectation, he trains quickly. “Ranger” was 3-mos/17-lbs when we adopted him, Ranger is now 5-mons, 31-lbs. Even at 5-mons, Ranger is extremely protective of the family and our property. Ranger doesn’t backdown from threats. This trait is desired and concerning at the same time. Ranger does socialize well with other dogs and people he senses we consider non-threatening. Our property is fenced and Ranger spends a good part of his day running, playing and training outside. Can’t say enough of how thrilled ans sastifying it is to own. Mountain Cur. Exceptional animal!

I adopted mine from a shelter about a year ago when she was about a year old, so now she’s almost two, and I couldn’t imagine life without her. She’s rambunctious, loves to run, play fetch, and wrestle, but I’ve found that rarely mentioned is that they are amazing viewers of body language- I can give her a command or get her to do a trick just through a silent hand motion, and if I’m not in the best mood she’ll come on over and give me a lick or a nuzzle or sit on my feet. She’s very alertive and protective and will always tell you when someone new is around or someone gets to close to you (which can be a bad thing with a spouse, she can get a little jealous). She’s very independent and always wants to take charge so sometimes she’ll like to try to rough house with dogs twice her size and sometimes other dogs don’t respond well to that so it’s been very important to be strict and assertive with her so that she knows she can’t always boss others around.

no joke...i'm alone since my husband passed and this girl knows who belongs on the street and who doesn't. I love that she knows the regular delivery people and the mailman and who should park on the street in front of our house; suburban living takes alot of brains for a dog. If it's an unknown she pumps herself up full tilt, chest out, hackles up, deep throat warning; she means business. She does a better job exterminating city rats escaping into the property from the urban 'planning' than the Pest Control company. She will sit there for hours at night and finally give a 'yip' to let me know she's done. Come morning time, when i go out to check the fish pond and walk around, there will most likely be a body or two. Although she has come in with mud on her feet and nose; those are the ones she's decided to bury, don't ask me why.

With 3 dogs through CGC certification and 1 'game type' APBT mostly rehabbed... a BMC is NOT for most folks. Simple reason: MOST owners never take a dog through all of 1 basic obedience class. Shelters are full of abandoned dogs because owners will not take training classes. It's that simple. My female BMC was adopted and returned by 2 families and the rescue group kenneled her as 'too disruptive' I was asked to meet/foster the BMC and immediate;y saw sh needs a job and retrieving a toy is it. But handling a dog is a skill that has to be learned so you can see, evaluate, act and understand the dog. Do not bluff.

I have used them in my falconry pursuits. So smart they are scary. BUT: They are not meant to be a city or suburban dog. They NEED to be on a ranch or farm. They are the ultimate do it all working breed.

We have a 13 week old that we rescued and don’t know it’s past/breeder but she is extremely high energy and needs lots of attention. We have always had really big dogs (mastiff, St. Bernard, Great Dane) who were pretty mellow so we’re getting used to having a dog that demands so much attention and exercise. She barks quite a bit and is always getting into our newborns toys but she’s sweet and really smart. Does anybody have any resources to help with training tactics and ways to learn why she’s so vocal. We take her for 1hour+ walks daily and she’s still extremely wound up. And if anybody has any tips on how to stop her from biting everybody, that would be appreciated as well. She’s not being mean, just playful but she bites a lot.

Some dogs can be taught to use the treadmill on leash with you standing by, with a treat reward of course. As far as the biting, we had a beagle who was obsessed with it when he was young. The only thing that worked was to have a chew toy nearby that I could shove into his mouth when he opened it long enough for me to remove my hand or wrist, lol!

We adopted an 8-week old puppy from the local humane society. We had no idea what she was, they thought she might have German Shepherd in her because of the face. As she got older, my wife was looking online for dogs that looked like her, she looks like a BMC. As we found people that knew the breed, yep, she's a BMC. We didn't know that for sure until much later. For biting, make a high pitched yelp like another puppy does, that's how they know they made a mistake. Never yell or hit them, ever. They bark when bored. They needs tons of activity, I put her food in a pop bottle to make her work to get it out (you can buy devices to do this as well), and I take her out every night to chase the laser light in the yard. The best thing is another high energy dog to play with, full time or at a dog park. We borrow the granddog, a husky mix, to wear out our dog, he's about 100 pounds and she can wrestle with him. The puppy biting is normal, they grow out of it. Lick mats work to calm, many toys, lots of exercise (best with other wild dogs). They do calm down, and you get a super dog. Our dog gets Christmas gifts from kids in the neighborhood that she sees on her walks, she absolutely loves kids. These are the most loving dogs I've ever seen.

That is weird! They are very common over here in the states but I've heard not so in the EU. But they are the best of dog friends!

I adopted a rescue dog that everyone presumed was a Pitt mix. The vet estimated him to be about 6 months old when we got him......I am in my 60's and pretty much have always had at least one dog. I have had a Pitt. I grew up with hunting dogs. After several months of walking and raising "Bo" I knew that whatever he was, he had hunting DNA. He has the eyes of a hound dog....but is muscular with a block head and testy like a Pitt. He wants to run the woods and fields similar to a Beagle. Now at about 15 months he is the "little man of the house" and wherever he goes...all 80 pounds of him. My wife has nick named "Monster" . We walk him 2.5 miles a day on average....he is off of the leash most of the walks ....he probably does about 4 to 5 miles while we are walking him. He is the color of a baby deer with jet black markings on the mouth and around the eyes. His eye area looks as if someone applied makeup it is so distinctive. We can hardly walk him if there a lot of people around....They all want to stop and ask questions about him. If I was single, I am sure he could get me dates because he is so darn good looking. He is non stop, intelligent, and trainable. We have been working with him on actually swimming instead of just playing in the water.......watch out what you wish for.....now that he has figured it out , he demands beach swim time as well as the walks..... I think I am the lucky owner of a Black Mouth Cur....BO is on pace to be the " Dog of my Life".

Our old ridgeback died about a year ago. We decided it was time for a new dog buy could not find a rescue Ridgie within a thousand miles. Saw a BMC photo and though, "this might be a Ridgie". We thought 'cur' was another word for mutt. We got real lucky. www.akc.org/expert-advice/dog-breeds/10-facts-about-the-rhodesian-ridgeback/

interesting you should say that; our rescue came from Arkansas and they are know the breed Ridgebacks to other breeds for their hunting skills. She has the shoulder ridge and spinal line of cross hairs ; but a cur by definition is a cross breed...still, she's a full time job with a truckload of payback; seven years and counting and grateful for every day with her.

Nice. I also have two of them. Do you give them any dog pills or supplements for growth and health? If yes what type and where do you get them?
