I´ve never heard of him before.....hows that possible?-well- one never stops learning new things....thats why I love music so much..! It connects people
Got to work with Tommy at Boots Club a few years before this but on that very stage!! Tommy was one of the most talented and genuinely nicest people you would ever what to meet!! I was working with Eddie Seals and Joe Grant backing Boots during that time. Tommy would come up and play his part and we would back him! What a Joy that was. The Drummer and I instantly connected with Tommy, musically and friendship wise!! I'm just so sorry he never got his due!! Tommy is forever missed!! Those days were so special!
Pure absolute virtuosity, humility, musical genius. Tommie was one of my friends when i lived in Florida and he was always generous with sharing his gift. He had a dry wit and just amazing fingers. Thanks for sharing this segment. I have a similar tape from another show so it was nice to see this one as well. Unbelievable how many dont know of Tommy.
He had a great sense of humor dry and sometimes, for lack of a better word, off beat but very witty which we all loved!! A musician's sense of humor haHa!!
For some reason I keep coming back to this video, it’s not just his unbelievable talent, it’s also the man himself, he is difficult, an individual, sort of unreachable.
I had a Tommy album years ago. I knew him through a mutual friend when he was still living in Florida. I’m glad I did because I know he can play beautifully and stylistically. Without that history I would’ve thought he was just another trying to show how incredibly fast he could play. These two selections showed that, but neither is particularly pleasing. I doubt that Chet could have played Black Mountain Rag this fast, but his version was more enjoyable. This reminds me of Buster B Jones. I know he, too, could also play with great style, but he was better known for just playing wicked fast.
Lenny Brea was one of the best guitar player EVER / he did stuff with his hands that is unmatched / but this kid tommy is to me as good as john knowles now there's a guitar play
You should check out the videos I've uploaded and which I'm going to upload of Tommy and then think about your POV. Tommy had total command of the guitar, including the Lenny harmonics. I have all official records of Tommy and some of Lenny and I think their talent was nearly equal. Lenny was more of a jazz guy, Tommy more a little more country but did also awesome arrangements.
Okay. Tommy Jones is technically superb. What I mean is that let us not compare Pres Obama with the CEO of WalMart. Guitarists are only now beginning to understand what Lenny was doing incl his harmonics never duplicated by even Chet. Chet himself declared Lenny was a "genius" Coming from the master is an awesome declaration. I believe that Tommy could have made it big, but for personal issues. Likewise Lenny. Really sad
Lenny Breau was a totally different guitarist . He never played 100 notes per measure. but instead played with feeling and soul. Lenny could sit in and play along any guitarist you want to name. incl Chet, Paul and many great jazz guitarists. There are many guitarists who sound like Tommy. Not many that sound like Lenny
