Highlights of the amazing Lloyd Marshall displaying his speed, reactions and power!
Lloyd Marshall - Was a light heavyweight boxer who was inducted posthumously into the International Boxing Hall of Fame on June 2010. Marshall began boxing at the age of 17 and turned pro in 1936. In 1943 Marshall fought for the "Duration" Light Heavyweight Title against Jimmy Bivins. During the bout, Bivins was knocked down in the 7th for a 2-count, and then Marshall was down for nine in the 9th, and at the bell in the 12th. Marhsall was then being counted out in the 13th to lose the bout. In 1944 he captured the Vacant "Duration" World Light Heavyweight Title with a victory over Nate Bolden. Due to the fact that he fought at his peak during World War II, Marshall never fought for an officially recognized world title. He retired in 1951 after KO losses to Bobo Olson and then Harry Matthews.

He beat Ezzard Charles, Charley Burley, and the "great" Jake Lamotta (I believe that Lloyd once said that Lamotta was one of his easiest fights.) Marshall was tied up with the mob and was forced to take a lot of "dives" just to have a career. He, along with several other great black fighters of that day was never given an opportunity to fight for the middleweight crown, while CLEARLY inferior fighters like Tony Zale, Rocky Graziano, Marcel Cerdan, and Lamotta held the title. Lloyd was a TRUE great and an uncrowned champion!
@surveying482

You put great next to jake lamota but not Ezzard Charles? Ezzard is top ten all time and goat LHW. He is the highest ranking boxer you talk about in your essay.
@patrickbrowne4606
@patrickbrowne4606 2 года назад
@@surveying482 I think that he was being sarcastic when he referred to Lamotta as “great” because he put it in quotes. Lamotta was not a great fighter..but MARSHALL (who easily beat a prime Jake LaMotta) WAS great, along with Charley Burley and of course, Ezzard Charles. These men were the uncrowned kings of boxing.

read about this guy, who though No.1 for 10 years couldn't get near McAvoy or Mills and after Marshall beat Mills, Gilroy's manager put out a challenge to Lloyd Marshall, but NO WAY would Jack Solomon's put it together and take a chance of a Gilroy victory, jeopardizing further the course they had laid out for Mills... see the ACTUAL Reports about his Whole Career here - facebook.com/Bert-Gilroy-1933-1950-503149766487621/

now you know why these guys were called murderers row. archie moore described Lloyd marshall and being very shifty and very dangerous. said he could break your head with one punch. he said eddie bookers punches were like a rivet gun, and said eddie broke his ribs while he was in his prime. there are a few seconds of footage of Holman Williams online. he seems quick, crafty, and light on his feet. eddie futch once said he would rather watch Holman Williams shadow box than to watch most people fight

I remember watching his 2nd fight with Ezzard Charles, and was thinking to myself .... does the taller man really have the advantage at this level of power, speed, skill, and elusiveness? Without clenching, I'm sure Marshall would have won that fight. I'm happy to hear he got inducted. I rate Charles very highly, but Marshall really made me question the advantages of taller fighters.
@dismemberingcarcass
@dismemberingcarcass 8 лет назад
+Chris Kim Yeah but their height difference was 5 cm. Im not saying it was easy for Marshall to fight taller opponent but it wasnt that much of height difference was it ? What if difference was 10 cm? When you have that much height difference,i believe it is reaaly easier to defeat someone on same skill level as you are. I think until there is 8 cm difference and up you dont have to worry about his size. After that it progressively gets difficult to fight. Do you agree/disagree?
@chriskim8154
@chriskim8154 8 лет назад
I would say if the ring is big, and the skill level is low, the taller fighter will have an easy time. But these fighters are legendary. I think a 3 inch (~8cm) height advantage might not be an actual advantage. You might have an easier time dodging backwards from punches, but the shorter fighter at this skill level will have an easier time dodging in all ways. And the taller fighter will sustain a lot of body damage, but less head damage.
@dismemberingcarcass
@dismemberingcarcass 8 лет назад
Chris Kim I agree. But what do you think is then minimal height gap which will make difference in match? For example Frazier is legendary fighter but would you pick him against Tyson Fury? Fury is good but nowhere near Frazier level but he is big and his size would be advantage.
@chriskim8154
@chriskim8154 8 лет назад
I don't think Tyson Fury touches Frazier. His skill is so poor. Honestly Frazier destroys Fury. In the same weight division, I would say with equal power/skill/reach you are right, around 10 cm might be too tall. In my favorite fight Holyfield vs Qawi 1, I honestly think if Qawi had more stamina, and dodged more punches, he would have the advantage in that fight. And the height difference was huge probably more than 10 cm. (Holyfield said Qawi had longer reach though lol)

Charles Burley called him the greatest puncher he ever faced..
@Kowajab
@Kowajab Год назад
What a ridiculously crazy style he has, from the looks of it he liked to fight with his hands so low that even fighters like Ali would say he was not taking his opponents seriously enough but with how effective he is at slipping I guess it did not matter and would enable more counterpunching opportunities with guys trying to head hunt. His seems to be like a combination of Julian Jackson and Jersey Joe Walcott with the hands low style and his explosive ko power. I might be misremembering this but I think he was the only man to Knockdown Charley Burley winning a spilt decision over him. He also koed ezzard charles in their first fight knocking him down 8 times!

Found a decent gem. Johnny Saxton beat Bratton. And went up 20 to try Nino B. Gil Turner and him have a good fight - after which Gil surpassed him and got a nice crossguard. He fought and beat Don Jordan who I'm reccomending a reel on. Don Jordan had a Front Foot Jab. All these guys boxrecs have tons of decisions to clearly worse resume guys. And his last fight he was suspended for refusing to get up off a punch the ref said looked like nothing. (Loaded gloves) . One with Jordan and Carmen Basillio looked thrown - Jordan only let him land bodyshots and the announcera were like oooh we havent seen rear uppers in a long time ! Best fight I found of Jordans was him and Vergil Akins.

Roy Jones Jr LONG before Roy the boy... Lloyd Marshall is EVERYTHING Sacred & LIES about Boxing... Marshall an All-time Great for sure, yet never fought for a world title, Marshall IS Proof that Soooooooo Many TOP fighters given the chance could have held a World title, he also proves that 'ownership' of fighters allows Some Unworthy fighters to indeed get the chance that fighters like Marshall didn't get and were easily 'better' than them. FEW fighters either side of S-MW, from BHop to RJJ to Calzaghe or any of them, wouldn't beat him.
