For voice acting the Chinese version really works wonder . The character usually speaks in a very chinese poetic way and its hard to replicate or express what they are trying to say in english. Being a chinese i think the voice in chinese really do remind me of how the novel should be like
@zoides I feel like your saying that just because your salty and have to rag on someone. You definitely would never say it to someone's face, such is the nature of the troll. I play most the games and this game is one of the best looking so I know for a fact, your just a moron. That's why you didn't name a game or anything. Your just talking to talk.
For those that doesn't know. The Chinese voice actor is the actor from 1986 Sun Wukong actor. The 1st short old man is a small god of a specific regional land. Each region has a specific land god. Usually one would see this shrine on the side of the road, country road, corner of a town building and etc.
I kind of disagree about the world design problem. People run past enemies in almost every from soft game and it’s never critiqued or used against them.
You should update this. You missed out on the secret location that allows you to upgrade gear. Not loosing value of defense when you go for a specific build with gear.
Wow! A review that doesn't say, "This game is Elden ring, DNC, Dark Souls etc..." You actually call it for what it is, an ACTION RPG! So sick of lazy "Reviewers"... Thank you! SUBSCRIBED!
Well... it is a souls-like still. I've seen people say it isn't, but it is. •same camera angle •same hud •stamina bar • + item bar layout •special healing flask with limited uses until next checkpoint •same checkpoint system •enemies respawn at every checkpoint rest And this is just what I noticed my first 10 minutes in. Dont get me wrong, its not a copy. They do many new things and it feels unique. But the base "souls-like" foundation is there.
@M98747 individualy, yes. But I specifically said "in tandem". It's all of these elements and more that give this it's souls-like feel. Now I'm not saying it's a copy, it branches out and does it's own things, but it's bones are very souls-like
No such thing as an unbiased review, that's literally impossible. A review is specifically an opinion (read: bias) of the reviewer. You just like this one because you agree with it.
@@AndroidPoetry The word you're looking for is 'subjective', not 'biased'. Reviews are always subjective, that's true. A biased review would lean heavily in one direction while largely ignoring the other. Many reviews on this game are motivated by the reviewers political point of view and don't really focus on whether this is actually a good game or not. This one doesn't seem to be, hence my post.
bias [noun]: 'inclination or prejudice for or against one person, group or subject, especially in a way considered to be unfair.' Again, the word you are looking for is 'subjective'.
I think this game dev will listen to gamer view after the release of their first game. I agreed with this guy becos he knew very little about the story of Wukong. In the future, I think game dev have to assume that gamer don't know well about the whole story of that game they are developing. This is the first game from China and it is amazing. Everything China did, they did it well.
@@albertcadgame8314 Most Chinese games and media are like this, from their games to their animated shows. I've seen so many that would be confusing if I didn't know the source material already.
The map feels empty because about 40% of the content is hidden (you heard it right, a Chinese reviewer has collected all the achievements, this is what he said), according to him, there are many boss battles that surpass any previous battle scenes (even better than the best battles in God of War and Elden Ring) are hidden, and the game has exclusive content for the second round. In addition, the social accounts of Game Science also constantly encourage players to explore more. Therefore, the map is empty only in appearance, you need more exploration.
exploration in this game is literally just walking into invisible walls hoping that you reach an accessible path, maybe that’s why reviewers haven’t found the hidden content.
@@Mohgenstein yeah finding hidden paths is kinda random. I aint mad tho since its their first game but its something they should improve in future titles.
The story journey to the west if fragmented into many chapters with each chapter had it own story. The Dev follow the same path as Journey to the west.
Can we PLEAAAAASE get this same treatment for mesoamerican legends/lore!!?? I can’t wait to play this game.. and it makes me think how amazing a game like this in the world of ancient Mayans or Inca or similar cultures would be so fresh and different.. an action RPG with some cosmic horror elements would fit so incredibly well in mesoamerican setting.
I second this. Closest I've found so far to a fun game in that kind of setting is Curse of the Dead Gods. Which is great fun, to be fair, but definitely not something that looks like any kind of budget was behind it.
I believe that a mesoamerican setting game would be a real treat for all the people of the world. seeing true aesthetics and cultural lore would be awesome. but a game like that could only realistically be produced by people of that culture, not entrusted to some foreign companies. Black Myth took over 7 years of work and suffered through unimaginable pressure and doubt from not only outside players but our own people. To say it would be a challenge to have something like this would be a gross understatement. But in the end I hope that Black Myth had shattered some myths that this kind of work is impossible for first time developers from nations that have not produced AAA before, and give some hope to other aspiring developers.
@@Santonxeven on performance mode the graphics are far from bad. its one of the best looking games on ps5 by far. im 2 hours in and its running very smooth on ps5
@@stinkyboi4eva im considering buying it but heard the fps goes bad after getting deeper in the game, the game looks really fun but im scared that it will take ages for a patch with the performance issues
1 minute till playing, I'm drunk, just finished Jedi survivor, and I'm ready. I like how it seems like the lock on triggers from a decent distance. Had some issues in past games where I lock on and have to get some distance but short lock on range makes me have to do it again.
@@You_are_bananasthat’s not good then if you have to intoxicate yourself in order for the game to be challenging. I was hoping the difficulty was at least challenging and not easy
Chinese is literally more ear grinding then Japanese. Even if it feels appropriate it would be still hard to listen to. Many people watch anime which is why I got used to Japanese. I watched some Chinese stuff but even if I got more used to it, sadly it's still hard to listen to.
If anyone is interested in the story but do not like reading so much there is a Parcast episode that covers Journey to the West pretty well. It hits all the important story beats and stays for the most part true to the story whole presenting a nice audio storytelling format.
and there is a gear upgrade npc,it's in the third map, where u fight a hidden boss Chen Loong and u can entry a new map where there is a tiger npc, he can upgrade your gear.
@chrispanico2276 it's an anti piracy software that causes a lot of performance and crashing issues for a lot of video games the most noticeable I can remember are jedi survivor and resident evil village.
2 million gamers on Black Myth Wukong on PC right now - factoring in consoles - and these devs in their first major creation - have made a single player game that is going to do more than $500,000,000. Congrats Game Science ! This is what gamers want to see !!!
You should be asking yourself why there are such numbers now. Why no one before it got anything similar. Some numbers are deceptive these days. To me who plays games often enough this looks good but nothing amazing. Even if numbers are true it doesn't reflect quality of a game completely. Even if I didn't see or know anything about a game it is already absurd that a company with their first game ever released a game better then older games who needed multiple games and years of development to release a masterpiece or anything close to that.
There are countless games compared to them. It can be good and it can be bad. FromSoftware loves to milk same stuff over and over that many blindly love. Sometimes they make something new and unique like Sekiro which I love a lot. Even if Elden Ring is a great game it still feels like Dark Souls 3.5 and they said they wanted to do something new but it's just Dark Souls but open world. Their games are good but they are not without flaws. It's not some gold standard too as many games since came out doing a better job.
With regards to the gear, you can upgrade earlier gear's stats to scale into later stages of the game if you dig their passives/playstyle, Still not the most expansive system, but i've seen many Soulslikes/Action games with way more barebones systems
4070 laptop GPU on high settings with ray tracing enabled and Frame-rate hasn’t dipped below 60 or crashed. Game runs pretty great for me minus some traversal stutter
Once you get access to armor upgrades from yin tiger, then you can upgrade any armor to have better stats if you want one of the early armors for its ability
That’s it with this game, the story is the journey. Like the books, there is one premise to get the scriptures from the west and that’s it, the journey within the trek is the story. I see why they made it this way.
I think the issue with the story being all over the place is that the game was made for an audience who had already watched 1980s JTTW from China. So westerners who don't have any context or watched the show would go in feeling lost and confused because the game doesn't tell you whats happening or why it is happening. It doesn't even bother with an exposition or dump any of that on you.
With the issue with the gear, the weapons there is a problem, but with the armor there is actually a secret hub that you can get where you can upgrade armor!
06:08 The gearing system is not bad, you just didnt get to the point where you could upgrade your armors on the Blacksmyth so you can choose the best equipment for your playstyle.
My sincere recommendation is that, if you haven't already, choose Chinese voiceover with English subtitle for max immersion. Like, in Metro games you would choose Russian voice and English subtitles like how that's meant to be.
Very helpful review thanks :) Liked & Subbed! Only point I would make (being picky) is that download time depends on connection speed so isn't a particularly useful figure, I found it considerably quicker, it's a 129GB download for anyone interested who hasn't already looked on steam.
I wish I could figure out how to enjoy the game like others. I've played all the souls games, GoW, etc, and I'm just not understanding the comparisons people are making. The hitboxes and performance on my PC have made it completely unenjoyable.
Dang being a “gamer” sure has changed since I was a kid back then when a games voice acting was bad and a story didn’t make sense we generally would call that a bad game…..
I think devs chose to tell the story this way. There is no way they can fit in the entirety of journeys to the west into the game in order for you to know the back ground. Also, as much as I love and adore Elden ring, the story (dialogue and cutscenes)is very flat, but if you go around read every hidden piece of lore, you will then understand how rich the story is (I admit i didnt read and watched a 3 hours RU-vid video). Bottom line is, if you don’t want to put in the effort, don’t tell me story does not make sense.
I agree, but with the critic score about to drop into the 70's it's not getting a nomination being that low I don't agree with the score being that low It should for sure be in the running but I think Rebirth is safe atm
Stellar Blade says hi. Stellar Blade is by far my GoTY for 2024. Black Myth might come close, from what I've played so far. Rebirth is in my top 3 though alongside Stellar Blade & Granblue Relink. Black Myth might end up taking one of those spots, but I'll wait until I complete it and go through NG+ to pass my judgment. Regardless, I'm loving the absolute hell out of it so far.
Cheers for the review. In my opinion, having watched many foreign films etc, It seems typical for Chinese media to lack narrative cohesion. Culturally their audience seem to expect more interesting story beats and set pieces; not minding plot holes or story inconsistencies compared to our Western sensibilities. It's something that I've had to learn to accept when enjoying Eastern entertainment.
For the voice acting part i am guessing you are referring to the English dub? Most of the times English dubs fail to capture the feeling of the original source material. Playing it on Chinese should be better. Actually you should always watch/play movies/games in their original source language. Dubs 90% of the time suck badly.
A lot of the complaints were from people with rigs far more capable than yours, ie a 7800x3D and 4090 combo. You could just be one of those fortunate people who are far less perturbed by frame variance/stutter.
@@patrickbrannigan8 have you never heard of the thousands of pc ports that sucked ahh? It usually runs better on consoles because they optimise it more for them.
PCs are notoriously variable in their specs. They aren't standardised like consoles, so more careful optimisation is required to account for the wider range of possible builds. It's possible for a game to run great on a mediocre business laptop while having severe issues on a high-spec desktop gaming rig. It's also possible for the reverse to be true. If the issues with a game are showing up with a lot of reviewers, that means it's a fairly widespread problem, but with how complex it is to test a game on a wide variety of systems with varying combinations of brands and specs, it's likely that a smaller or newer dev team won't have done as comprehensive a QA pass as the big AAA devs tend to do. This can lead to unfortunate situations where systems similar to the setup the devs used for testing get a great experience while the game spazzes out and breaks for other people, regardless of how powerful their PCs are.
Been waiting since lockdowns for this game, and it looks every bit as good as we'd all hoped. Yet, I'll never play it. No physical copy, my money stays in my pocket. Unless its on gamepass or only costs $20. No chance $100 purchase that can be removed from my library at the whim of the people that took my money for it, is in any way appealing to me. Haven't played Baldurs Gate 3, Haven't played Alan Wake 2, which I eagerly waited over decade for. Neither offered me the right of owning the product I paid for. I won't be party to owning nothing and being happy about it. Game looks effing incredible though. Seriously good.
@leviharper6268 I'm looking for it for Xbox series x. What platform did you get it for (if you don't mind me asking) and where did you get it? Checked bestbuy,Walmart, gamestop, and amazon. Nothing.
I dont have the constitution to play true Souls like games. If the hardness of the game is really like God of War, then I'll be super happy to play it.
@@RedWolfensteinI have heard that it wasn’t 100% souls. By other reviewers who released videos today. They said that there are some commonalities but not many.
I heard bosses have phases that only activate if you damage them fast enough. Kinda like the better you get the harder they fight you. So you could see different boss phases on a second playthrough where you know how to fight them
The whole souls like comparison is played out and getting old af. This is not a souls like. Having checkpoint recharge areas doesn’t make it a souls like
The gear thing sounds valid but on the other side of the coin is Elden Ring which has WAY too many options and 80% of them aren’t better than what you have.
man if its a fighting rpg like sekiro, eldenring, darksouls are never car about the story its always hit or miss and i dont think most people care about stories in these types of games unless you a 100% completionist
I just hate that they didnt really put much defense in the game, i guess since Wukong is a monkey, they want him to roll and flip everywhere, looks kool but that one issue makes the game more difficult than it would be if i could defend in more ways than just being evasive for the most part, then the fact that there are so many bosses and sub bosses that hit way harder than Wukong does, without knowledge of the games mechanics and everything, the game has become less enjoyable, i dont fancy being stuck on a boss for HOURS....my OCD makes me wanna keep going but once my head and eyes begin to hurt, i gotta step away and Wukong has definitely PISSED ME OFF
This totally explains why @PCGAMER hates this game, it's good, non political, and they have embargoed the reviews to be only about game play... Which means all the game 'journalists' who cannot get past training levels have to actually play a game and do a review on the gameplay...not the politics (Love your videos BTW - thanks, as always, for being a legit, hardcore gamer and providing your insight)
I played 3 hours and was unplayable due to crashes, fps drops and severe spikes. I was on pc with a 4090 and Intel 12900kf. I literally got stuck on a boss and couldn't beat them due to crashes and fps drops. Ended up requesting a refund. There's also no map. You really get lost trying to navigate around abit tedious but manageable. Overall: don't buy untill they atelast patch these crashes and performance issue. Game is not ready for release in this state.
