It's just a kind reminder, all the skills Wukong uses can be found in the novel Journey to the West, immobilization, transformation, multi-form, and even the stick that can grow bigger or smaller. So it's not copying any games, instead, some games and cartoons were inspired by that novel.
Western audience might view these monsters or figures as some mere random amalgamations with asian traits, aka just dude punching stabbing grotesque oversized monsters over n over etc..thus the accusation of darksoul/GoW rippoffs. But for those who grew up with Wukong from journey to the west adaptations, these are in facts very loyal interpretations of actual characters from the novel, as well as taoist/budhist pantheons, along with familiar details of their back stories. Like that yellow eyebrow dude also faking being a Buddha canonically.
Well, the Journey to the West stays perhaps the most well known Chinese tale, perhaps only Mulan is more famous, especially since the Disney animation movie. So no, the Western audience "in general" won't just consider it a rip off of the Souls like games. On the other hand, the bleak tone, filled with regrets and sadness, is very inspired by Elden Ring, Bloodborne and Dark Souls. That doesn't mean that the game won't be appreciated for itself. The art design is gorgeous, the characters intriguing (fantastic if you know the tale and a bit of Chinese mythology). The only thing, the main character is just a blank vessel. That's a bit sad, especially if you compare to the amazing introduction of Sun Wukong at the beginning. Many would be a bit confused to the fact of not playing the Monkey King himself.
@@klug5916 ye after watching this clip i think so too. I would love to have a new version that we playing the previous Sun Wukong on the Journey to the west haha
@thaimperial97 no clear indication they referred to gameplay. Even then, that wouldnt explain why they gave a different standard for this one, while being noticeablly silent on western counterparts being similar to one another. And let be honest , these guys , beside criticism, offer no idea of how differently things should be done. People just say things these days.
Sheesh Dragon Ball had ALOT of inspiration from this story. Akira Toriyama wasn't kidding that he was inspired from the Myth Story. Well done and RIP, Akira.
@@stellviahohenheim Please do not speak if you don't understand the origins of Dragon ball and the lore that was written 500 years ago, that inspired written literature for hundreds of years in Northeast Asia Korea China Japan and Vietnam. Do not insult yourself and the majesty of this literature.
Unlike other AAA games we had in those past few years, this one really is very well made and we feel that the developers put their whole art and love in it.
@@david998899 you can search up Journey to the West TV series 1986 or the remade version in 1996. Most people like the 1986 version cuz its the og but I like the 1996 version more. I think it's gonna be hard to find Eng sub tho.
This is the bad ending of Quick Pass, a metaphor. The most important thing to learn the scriptures is not to learn the scriptures, but to learn the way to learn the scriptures. The Great Sage is still sealed in the stone because of the lack of the root of intention, which is to tell those who modifiers and pass quickly pass quickly. You lack the original intention to get the scriptures (play games), so the great saint in your heart can only be sealed in the stone, and the destiny man you play can only bring a golden hoop to worship into Buddhism, controlled by the rules and the golden hoop, and wait for the next destiny to continue this reincarnation.
This is a well-known Chinese myth that has been popular not only in China for thousands of years, but also in Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia. If you know this myth, you will be surprised by the story setting and scene setting of the game! (Real scenes, statues of legendary figures, temple relics actually exist in China). In the myth, Wukong's main weapon (golden hoop) weighs 6750 kilograms!
@@randomworld4662the most common reason is that it’s a fantasy epic like Lord Of The Rings. The other reason is because it’s a well-written satire of the corrupt Ming Dynasty government and beauracracy. Back then authors or poets, no matter their dissatisfaction towards the ruling class, couldn’t directly name names, lest they want to offend the higher-ups and risk a death penalty, so they had to make loads of allegories using historical figures. There’s a lot of allegories in Journey To The West: the Buddha represents the Emperor, the monsters that used to be the gods’ steeds represent the troublemakers who have powerful people to clean up their messes. Even Monkey can be seen as the author’s self-insert fanfiction: how he started out fearless until he was repeatedly bullied and mistreated until he was pinned under the mountain. The mission to retrieve the sutras can be interpreted as the author’s own journey to the capital to become a bureaucrat himself. There’s lots of depth, symbolism, allegories and lessons in this epic fantasy adventure that can be used even today, and that’s why Journey To The West remains famous and popular until today.
@@randomworld4662 The novel Journey to the west was released in the 16th century during the Ming Dynasty, but the "Monkey" myth was documented in a book as early as in Song Dynasty (960-1279).
A theory goes that the destined One is a string of hair from Wukong that spawned as a clone of Wukong to resurrect him, as the destined One appears to know the skill of transformation and immortality too, its not possible for another Monkey to obtain these powers, as it requires immense amount of centuries to train these skills. also when you die in the game you respawn from a hair aswell, so the destined One must have been related to Wukong. 😁
@@mirkoruhl9324 Well in the game Zhu Bajie the Pig companion revealed that the Destined One wasn't the first one searching for Wukongs relic. Zhu Bajie said, I quote: "Oh great, they send me another mute" meaning that probably alot of other Wukong clones tried the journey but probably didn't succeeded. And it was waiting for the actual Destined One to actually succeed.
I'm very sure, all this time the one who was looking for the Wukong artifact was one of his feathers that was removed before he actually fell asleep. Therefore, every Wukong artifact is always active when touched by the character being played. I'm sure that in the next game, who knows when it will be released, Wukong's fur will return to its original owner and Wukong will return and defy the sky.
The dude wakes up from his dream and kills the fox is extremely accurate, especially in China. There are mutiple cases some guy just wakes up and leads a rebellion just because he sees himself as a king in the dream.
@@dmssb2319No, that's the normal ending, not because of modifiers. There's another ending that hasn't changed much, and the one you're talking about is unlikely to exist
Chapter 2 Animation has two meanings, 1. People, monsters, demons, and Buddhas can all have good and evil thoughts, and they can be both kind and cruel. For example, Lingji, although he is a Bodhisattva, the bugs in the Golden Kingdom are her mounts. In order to suppress the people who once opposed Buddhism, the Yellow Wind Monster killed bugs to save the people. At the same time, he became greedy and harmed the people. Crazy tigers eat countless people, but they can play with sick children! 2. The final narration was also spoken by a person from above, meaning that there is a hierarchy between gods, Buddhas, humans, and demons. If you are a demon stock, you are inferior. You, Huang Feng, have been doing good deeds for a hundred years, but if you do one bad thing, you will be executed, just like Huang Feng and Sun Wukong who are doing well. He threatens the Heavenly Court and will be executed! So the narrator is not telling us the truth, he is just a person from above threatening and mocking Sun Wukong. You can say that people from above are racism, so they want to kill Sun Wukong, who is a monster! What I said may not be correct, everyone's understanding is different, and this fable has a deep connotation!
the anime at 1:19:03 spoke volumes to me regarding humanity as a whole. No matter how much you provide greed is always a means to an end and flesh is never satisfied. Im ready to study Buddhism now.
It's also about the god and his own arrogance. He made everything worse for the villagers to force them to depend on him. And he got himself ripped apart just to prove a silly point.
@@rosesweetcharlotte it's pretty awesome the angles you can take and all are valid. For me personally it would be nice to still have reason and logic when desperation arises. I got a ways to go.
I’m not a gamer but I have been watching the Black Myth Wukong related videos non stop for a few days. I appreciate this video because it showed me some characters and details I missed. ❤
As an East Asian guy, I grew up watching the Journey to the West TV series, and this darker and more intense version brings me so much joy. I mean look at those huge bosses/villains, the designs are so epic.
Spider is Chang'e's maid. She fell in love with Bajie at first sight, but Bajie liked Chang'e. However, Chang'e was with the gods, so the gods exiled Bajie and the maid to the human world. Bajie became a pig demon and the maid became a spider, but the maid always loved Bajie. Unfortunately, Bajie did not love the maid! This story tells us never to love someone who doesn't love you!
But amazing. How to encapsulate a love story in a few minutes. It's Pixar level in term of emotion (I'm referring to the opening of Up, even if Pixar had more time)
The pronunciation of "pig" and "spider" in Chinese is very similar, with the pig pronounced as "zhu" and the spider pronounced as "zhizhu". This is probably the reason for their love.
i mean the game is great and all. But what a pity they didn't mention the rest of the gangs: The Tang monk, the river yaoguai disciple and the white dragon horse
Technically aside from Wukong and Bajie/Pigsy being such integral characters in the game Sandy I think gets seen in the boat trip at the end of the game as one of Wukong’s memories (the dragon swimming in the water at 2:54:10 I think is Sandy considering he was a dragon river spirit). Tang as Jinchizi is in the chapter 3 ending music video and gets mentioned at least a few times by Bajie/Pigsy in the game. Dragon Horse is out of luck. I didn’t spot him lol. But obviously all of them make an appearance together again during the music video ending for the true ending. But I do wish they actually showed up all together again in the actual game instead of the animations.
DAMN I MUST SAY THE ADAPTATION OF THIS GAME IS STRICT TO THE NOVEL! I come from a long line of Chinese heritage, so i grew up watching wukong. The most surprising part is the music at the end! It is the pièce de resistence of the movie that I watched! It turns me so much back to my childhood!
Damn the part with the Bull king and Wukong really got me. We used to have things like that but we can't have that now because that's now called toxic masculinity
But isn't that sort of the point? That these characters are sort of toxic? And their own need to for glory and significance led them down some very bad paths?
If you can get to the last level, let me share with you a piece of knowledge: There is a forbidden magic in Journey to the West called Faxiang Tiandi, which only Yang Jian and Wukong can master. The effect of the spell is that it will turn into a huge image with the sky above its head and the ground beneath its feet. The lion is just one manifestation of the art of change.
We are all born as monkey kings. Initially full of ego about our power and potential, desires, basically good, ignorant, rebellious etc. As we go through life we learn our shortcomings, hopefully overcome our shortcomings and become enlightened. Sun Wukong is a brilliant, deep and philosophical story with Buddhist roots
Loving the lore of Black Myth Wukong! The way it intertwines with the Journey to the West legends is fascinating. Immersive Translate made the cultural context much clearer.
I may be wrong but don't think it's official. More like reimagined what happened after. All he ever wanted was to not die and keep his kind with him. But his journey to seek immortality took him to the path of journeying to the west with monk xuan zhang for the scriptures.
This game has been the new hot topic. Glad to see this on youtube because normally I won't be interested in games😅. But just watching the beginning caught my attention. It's job well done! 👍 I would recommend you to familiarize yourself to the original story " Journey to the West" first then you would appreciate this more.❤

I know there are monkeys in Indian religions, but Wukong is not even remotely similar to them, especially not to Hanuman. 😂 Wukong is essentially a character who tried his best to fight for his freedom and eternal happiness, but ends up being subdued by authority (both Buddha and the Chinese Taoist gods) and has to work for them. He had to help a Chinese monk during a long journey to obtain Buddhist scriptures from the West, or India. It’s a sad story for Wukong. It basically hints children who love freedom and adults who have to work and become part of the system. The broader context is the struggle between Buddhism and Chinese Taoism for more believers in China during the Tang Dynasty, around 1,000 years ago. But nevertheless, unlike most other countries, religions are never a critical part of Chinese daily lives. We believe in our ancestors and ourselves more than any god.
WOW, that was very interesting and detailed. I live in the 🇺🇸 (Florida) and this was Mosley all new to me. So thank you for explaining a lot of it to me! That being said, I had to say my favorite is the singing guy with no head! Something about the song is just very catchy👌👍👍👍👍
well, the first time the buddha banished him, he did wreck havoc in the celestial court and stole a bunch of ambrosia foods. Buddha gave him a chance to redeam himself. The second time though, after he became a Buddha and given a position in the court, which is the original story from this game, they did do the monkey dirty.
These cutscenes are a work of art. As for the game overall, from what I gathered since Aug 20 to today, many of the players so far put give this a solid 8/10 to 9/10. Everyone has their own take on hardness and interests, but overall positive views seems to be the general consensus. It could very well be GOTY.
As somoene who is relatively new to the Sun Wukong Mythos, and most of my knowledge comes from the Lego Monkie Kid cartoon, i still think I managed to follow along to most of this. The biggest difference is, here everyone's actual Chinese names are bwing used, whereas in tne cartoon, the majority of characters are given simplified names. Example, the Bull character is simply Demon Bull King, or DBK, along with his Beloved wife, Princess Iron Fan, and even his Son, Red Sun (Or is it Red Boy?) The cartoon also refrences the Samadhi Fire, The Lady Bone Demon, Ne Zha, Azure Lion, the story of the Yellow Robed Sage, all of which, If not most of it, im pretty sure i recognized when they appeared in these scenes. But now im wondering, if Sun Wukong Dies, and we play through the game as Dark haired monkey, using Sun Wukong's Fighting Style. If thats the case. Are we playing as just a random Silent Protag with a darkwr asthetic, or are we playing as Macaque?
@@Hamui-kk8mw I mean they're not wrong. But it's also like saying siegfried is a copy of sigurd. Or Hercules (roman) being a copy of heracles (Greek). Both are the same but writen by different cultures.
@@Hamui-kk8mw sigurd married a valkyrie while siegfried married a queen. Siegfried had the cursed gold of fafnir and sigurd had the magic of the gods. Siegfried became invulnerable by bathing in fafnir's blood, sigurd became nearly imortal because of the runes. And with hercules he's just a toned down version of heracles.
Journey to the West was written in the 16th century, that's only 400 years ago. In Europe the Renaissance was happening and the America's were being colonized. And *all* history goes back thousands of years 😂. That's how time works.
