Since all the flashbacks in this game are out of order, here's an ordered summary of the events, from the original Journey to the West, to the ending of Black Myth: Sun Wukong, a mischievous, greedy, arrogant monkey is born from a magical stone. He becomes king over his fellow monkeys in their home Mount Huaguo, and goes on a quest for immortality after learning of the inevitability of death. This quest leads him to obtaining superpowers, martial arts, immortality, and makes himself many sworn comrades/brothers as well as enemies on the way. To quell his chaos in the mortal realm, The Heavenly Court decide to keep him close under their watch, and give him a low-ranking post in Heaven as Chief Horse Groomer, however, to satisfy his ego, they lied to him about his rank, calling this position lofty. Learning of their lies, Wukong takes great offense to them, and unleashes his wrath upon Heaven (the infamous "Havoc across the Heavens"), fighting and defeating many gods. He is eventually subdued only by the Buddha, and for his crimes, gets imprisoned under a mountain for 500 years. Black Myth Wukong adds here a bit that wasn't in the original story: during these 500 years, everyone who allied with Wukong during his havoc have been punished, those are the Yaoguai Kings we see in the true ending flashback where he's drinking with them in his Water Curtain Cave. Which is why so many of his old comrades, like the Bull Demon King, feel embittered towards him. Wukong is offered a chance to repent by Bodhisattva Guanyin: his crimes will be forgiven if he serves as a bodyguard for Tang Sanzang, a monk going on a pilgrimage from China to India to bring back the sacred Buddhist scriptures. He accepts the offer, and to make sure he won't shirk his duty and rebel again, a golden band is placed upon his head, which would cause him great pain if its chant is spoken. Wukong and the Tang Monk go on a long, arduous journey full of adventures, and even add two more repenting pilgrims to their party: Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing. They go through many trials and defeat hundreds of yaoguais seeking to eat the monk for immortality along the way, some of whom were old friends of Wukong, like the Bull Demon King. The Pilgrims succeeded in their journey and brought back the scriptures, even though some were accidentally lost along the way. For their efforts, they were rewarded high ranks in Heaven, with Wukong even being granted Buddhahood as "The Victorious Fighting Buddha", and removed the golden headband. However, in this retelling of Black Myth Wukong, this was all another ruse from Heaven: The headband was never actually removed, only concealed, and the Buddhahood title was only given to Wukong to placate him yet again, like when they named him Chief Horse Groomer. Heaven never trusted Wukong, in spite of his immense growth and change of heart during the journey. To escape Heaven's control once and for all, Wukong devises a plan with his sworn brother Erlang Shen, and the guidance of the next Buddha Maitreya: He would "fake" his death in a second, staged rebellion against Heaven, and his remains would be divvied up into five relics, to be given to five Yaoguai Kings of Erlang's choosing. One day, the sixth relic, his Mind, would reincarnate as a monkey of his homeland Mount Huaguo, and come to reclaim the five relics should he be worthy, so that he may reborn anew, without the golden headband controlling him. Then the events of the game transpire as you see them. In the end, once Wukong is properly reborn in the true ending, the animation implies a flash forward, where after we see Wukong alone in his cave, with the weapons of his past comrades strewn about, sets off somewhere with a determined look, possibly implying a third, final rebellion, perfectly setting us up for a DLC. The End :)
