The funny thing is I was cleaning my front porch with all my lawn equipment and found that little piece and saved it because I knew it belonged to something. And, my weed eater was not working and didn't understand why. I had done everything right but it just wasn't working. I came here and so Thankful I did. Now I can't find the piece I had put up. Lol I really do appreciate this video. It was really frustrating knowing I was doing everything right. Blessings to you.
Thank you so much! I was wondering why the string kept coming out after I replaced the broken cap. I was missing this part. Ordered off Amazon and my weed eater is working great now!
Thank you so much. I lost mine too and got it ordered today. It was called a lever. They sent it free as a courtesy. Really appreciate the help. It was exactly what I needed help with!
Dude you saved me from Having to go to my elderly neighbor and ask him why my line won’t advance. That “lil guy” was not in its place. I must have dislodged it when I put a new line cartridge in. Thanks a ton! Is single gals new to know the basics.
Thank you all for the tips. My line feeder assembly flew off and when I put it all together the feeder wasn't locking. I went through a whole spool before I discovered the problem. I knew a part must be missing and within minutes I found this video detailing my exact problem and how to solve it. I retraced my steps and found the small part but after careful examination -- and watching your video - I realized a piece of it had broken off. Anyway, I ordered the part from Amazon and I hope it will be back in service for another round next weekend. Thanks for quickly solving my frustration!
Very complete. Very important to line up the cut outs on the black spool with the openings for the legs on the orange cap. I've also found that as the battery weakens the string doesn't feed as well.
Thank you for this video, I only wish I had looked at it before wasting my stock of weed eater line! My Black and Decker like yours was missing the little black piece under the spool. This caused me to go through a whole new spool of line on one lawn not mention stopping every few minutes to try and fix it!
@@reppinjnf It's called lever assembly or SA lever. $6 part. This link is a newer trimmer than the one in the video but if you know your model number you can find the right page on same web site. www.partswarehouse.com/Black-Decker-LST136-40V-MAX-Lithium-High-Performance-St-s/157831.htm
The string on my trimmer wont automatically keep moving out. I tried with 2 different new spools - same issue. I have to manually open the lid and pull out the string and put the lid back on. Help!!
The problem is the replacement spool, not the trimmer. Try using a drill with a 5/8 bit to carefully make the center hole in the replacement spool a little bigger. That should allow your spool to turn and automatically advance when more string is needed.
I'm haveing the same problem I have to keep stopping and take the cap off to pull out more line and it was actualy working good for a while and then I had to put a new cartridge in now it's back to its old tricks I'm haveing to do it Manuely again I don't no what I'm doing wroung ?????
Mine is making a loud rubbing sound. I took the spool off, thinking that was causing the noise, but it still howled when I turned it on. Seems like it needs lubrication, but I don't see anyplace to apply it. Any suggestions?
Help.. I have the same one, bought in 2017, and this past week it started freezing up. It wouldn't turn. Manually rotated the head and it started turning again but it's obviously struggling. I've never done any maintenance except to replace the string so - something's gummed up. How do it get it working g freely again?
What to do if long grass gets wrapped around the base of the spool housing, stopped it from spinning, and the metal cog on the motor shreds the plastic cog that's behind the spool housing?
wow thank you so much for the clues i needed. black and decker definitely needS to explain this BETTER: the stupid 'easy feed' button doesnt feed anything it just shuts off the motor. so it is natural for us to assume when the button doesnt make the string come out it is broken. also the two wide slots in the spool look like that is where the cap edges go into but they dont. The pin on the little lever mechanism BELOW THE SPOOL has to go into the rigtht slot in the bottom of the spool then you just push the string and pull out to advance the line. the key is knowing the 'easy feed' button ISNT. its just a manual operation but the spool has to be in the right slot so it goes forward and stops.
Great video! Had a 10" since '18. The orange cap finally wore through and the pieces and wire went everywhere. I reordered the cap and bulk wire but the spool spun freely as you showed. I figured there was a missing piece but had zero idea of what it was. Now I know! Thanks!
I owned a couple of these before I finally bought a Ryobi 40 volt-huge improvement. The only good thing about these nowadays is you can get a new after market battery for less than $15.
My cap broke off. Bought a new cap and still was having issues. Wasn't until watching this video that I realized I had lost the lever part that you mentioned. Found it online for $10 including shipping and ordered it - had been getting ready to throw the old one out and shell out $100 plus for a new week whacker. Thanks.
Thanks man! Mine wouldn't self-string and I couldn't figure out why... I bought it used and it didn't have the spring, I found one that worked in the garage and now it works perfect, hell yeah.
I have a gh900 tyoe2. Stopped working one morning. Took it apart and it turned out the brushes were almost wore out. I spent 3 to 4 hours trying to find replacements. Was finally told that they are not available. Once they wear out, just throw this $60 toy away and buy a new one. I want to know where I can get replacement brushes.
UPDATE: My set of 2 levers arrived. Replaced them easy. Put my spool in. I slayed weeds for over an hour and still have string left. A few times, I had to put the string to get it to come our a little farther.
Thank you so much. I was out using my weedwhip today and my spool kept feeding. I found your vid, went back outside to find the little piece you showed us, found it in 30 secs, and was back up and running in less than a minute. Thank you!!
Hey I got the same weedwacker. My problem is my line wrapped around the lower shaft and I can't get it out. Can u make a video how to fix this problem? Thanks.
I have to keep moving the extension cord plug that goes into my very old weed eater to keep it running, any solutions for that. It's like there is a short on the actual prong area of the weed eater. The extension cord is OK
I have a model similar to yours. Any way to take the spool housing off? I think I have grass wound up underneath and inside of it so it doesn't spin without slowing down or making a lot of noise. I don't see any screws to pull the housing off to clean underneath it. You know how to take that apart?
That little gizmo that keeps it from spinning is missing the metal tab--looks like it's worn off the part that follows the guide for self-feeding. Can I buy a replacement gizmo, and what is the real name of the gizmo?
I have a new Black and Decker Trimmer and it unspools all of the line in a couple of minutes. Is there something wrong with this? Should I return it or is there something to set?
Why does my trimmer line empty in a matter of minutes? A whole spool empties out way too quickly. I just purchased a new lever assembly and it still doesn't regulate line properly? Thanks for your help!
The auto-feed feature is worthless. I was going through a fresh reel in five to ten minutes, so I disabled it by taping down the ratchet lever, and now I manually feed the line, which now lasts much longer. It is the last B&D product I will own, and have ordered my EGO trimmer to replace it.
I'm tempted to say it's because it's a piece of junk. I have trouble with not only poor feeding, but also with string breaking right at the eyelet. Tried cleaning and polishing eyelet, but still have issues. Not giving up, but closer to tossing it in favor of a different system.
Make sure the lever in the spool is moving freely and is in the right spot when installing the spool. If it’s still not feeding right, replace the lever with a new one. You can buy replacement levers online.
stop asking me to change my name! The pin or tab in the head needs to be in the outside channel of the spool. Make sure that tab/pin moves easily, too. Sometimes by the time you put the spool and the cover back on it moves the tab to the wrong groove of the spool. Mine cooperates most of the time but I still have to monkey with it sometimes. Hope that helps.
I’m having the same issue. I think it’s the plastic latch thing on the inside that he talked about in the video. Mine is still there, but it’s missing that yellow/golden looking stud thing that is on his.
I just went through 5 spools in a short time. Like another person said, my whole assembly flew apart and I put things back together as best as I could, but did not find the leveler.
@@cherylmalcolm3386 I looked up "black and decker lever for electric weed trimmer." I found a 2 pack on Amazon for a decent price. ($9.16). I do hope it is the right part because my manual didn't have a number. I thought my lever was a part of the shattered spool when the assembly came apart, so I threw it away. Lowe's or Home Depot may have it as well- I got the trimmer from Lowe's. I didn't see it listed on their site.
That is the problem I'm having I followed everything you said and it keeps spinning and spinning and I lose all my string. Now that you mentioned that little piece that goes inside, I don't have one it came off a long time ago.
Thank you!!! Omg mine kept spinning, and that little plastic piece at the bottom was put in backwards. I was about to throw the whole thing away. It was pissing me off so bad! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I would love to speak to the rocket scientist who designed this automatic feeder. Seems to me that the spool is locked into place because the lever sets in a notch in the bottom of the spool. I just can’t see what is supposed to happen in order for the lock to disengage and let a small amount of string to be fed. Someone please do a video on this explaining the process in detail so we can better diagnose the issues. Also: why would the Craftsman model work without a lever spring when the B&D models have a spring under the lever. Very interesting!
Mine has stopped auto-feeding. It used to be my brother's, but he passed it to me to fix after he had lost the cap and the spool. After sourcing the spares I've managed to use it successfully for a whole spool of cord, without the spring in place! New spool, and it's not working. Maybe the spring is important after all...?! (I got a spare spring with the cap I bought. Hope I can find it tomorrow!)
Well, I haven't found the spring, but I did follow advice found in another video, and it's still working without the spring... I applied dry lubricant (silicon spray) to the spool spindle and that has cured the problem. The line is auto-feeding once more. The problem was that the spool did not rotate freely enough for the little cam weight to operate properly. Job done!
Thank you so much I actually was going out to buy a new one just like the one in the video then I remembered that lil piece I had no idea where it came from I found it an fixed it omg thank you so much for this video
The bearings in my unit seized. Its a good idea to open up the unit every year to drip light lubricant into the bearing. The bearings are pressed on too tight to be able to remove them without destroying the shaft. Good Luck.
What do you call that little piece inside that was missing? Mine is missing too and it's causing issues the line just keeps on coming out because that stopper isn't there
All my pieces are intact. Last spool I put on worked great. Had to put a new one on yesterday and it wont feed. Have to take it out and pull string out. Very frustarting
Do you have a video that shows how to fix a 20V Lithium Trimmer that won't start even though the battery is charged? I press the safety trigger and the switch but nothing happens. Thank you.
I have the same problem. Threw my old one out and bought a replacement. Then the new one died just after a year. Would love to know if there's a fix for this also
My line fed too fast. All I did was stretch the spring out a bit so it applied more pressure on the spool. I tried to make that fix more complex than it was.
Well I’m happy for the seemingly every single person who found that little black piece but I am not so lucky. I’ve ripped my shins apart yet again in anger but at least you showed me the issue. Can I buy a new one of these somewhere?
Make sure you get the right replacement lever that matches your model of trimmer, though. The Amazon link provided is for a specific lever which fits on certain models, but not all.
Good news.I got my auto line feeder working on my gh900. I had put the line in the wrong way. The instructions were vague. When I saw you're how to string the spool. I tried it and the auto fed line began to work.I doubled line in the spool too.
I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use ru-vid.comUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.
Hi! Nice video...I was wondering if you ever had it burning, probably overheating and burnt out the electrical cord extension...do you think that it can be fixed at home or it is not worthy? Thanks a lot in advance...
Same problem here smelled a burned smell the other day but it kept working. Tried it today and it only worked for about 5 mins before it died. Did you find a solution?
I got this new black and decker weed eater model G900. The feed was working perfectly on the preset spool, but, once it ran out, it was a tough yard, I manually put a new string on their and the auto feed line was not work ing.I had to open it up and pull it. The Thingamajig was on there, not broke at all.I followed the direction I wound the new string tightly and did not criss-cross.I even cleaned the inside, but it still would not auto-feed I had an olde model that burned out a few months ago. I t was a lot easier to pull the string out through button-pushing that this more expensive model.
I have the bottom clip and spring. That's not the problem. It got tangled in weeds and now makes a LOUD noise when I turn it on, with no spinning. Well, I'm sure the motor in there is spinning or trying to spin. I mean, something has to be making that LOUD noise. Maybe the motor axle got de-threaded from the bottom piece? who knows, but it appears to be junk now. lol
Aloha I just threw out my self-feed Bl and Decker after it finally burned up the date exactly one year since I bought it. I ordered the bump head this time. Still, Black and Decker as they are the only ones who still make an electric cord unit. NO GAS NO BATTERY PACKS. OK now I am going to FIND A WAY if it takes me all day to take the head OFF so I can put on the speed feed head. I bought 2 different kinds with attachments and come hell or high water I am going to do this. It is brand new so I can SEE EXACTLY WHERE I need to open it up and how to put the adapter on the shaft. If I can not find anyone in here who will help me I guess I will find a machine shop and take it there and have it done. But someone like you who knows these things might be able to help me. I'd SURE APPRECIATE IT! DO YOU KNOW HOW TO TAKE THE HEAD OFF SO I CAN GET TO THE SHAFT??? Thank you very much Antoinette Jackson
Okay. So there is a difference between the old model that is the lst522 And the newer model. Th3e older model does not have a spring it seems from factory. The new one does and needs it to operate.
Thanks for this helpful video. Great link you shared for parts and it's cool how they show schematics to help you figure out what you need. Do you still do business with them?
Find your specific model number and part on this third party company web site www.partswarehouse.com/Black-Decker-LST136-40V-MAX-Lithium-High-Performance-St-s/157831.htm
So I was using mine and it died. Charged the battery up, and now when I press the button it makes a loud beeping sound and doesn't work. Any one else having this issue?
servicenet.blackanddecker.com/Products/Detail/LST540 I snagged a piece of twine between my spool housing (#19 on the parts diagram) and the ball bearing (#22 on the parts diagram). I believe I was able to get the entire piece of twine out with some needle nose pliers but I want to make 100% sure so i don't have any drag on my spool. I can't figure out how to get the spool housing off of the motor assembly without taking apart everything. Is there an easy way to get the spool housing off of the shaft?
Hey Dude , Do you know of any video's on how to replace the spool housing on these B&W Trimmers if so " PLEASE " can you send me a link, I only need to replace the black outer housing that holds the string spool , clip, and orange cap on my GH900 model trimmer, signed " Desperate Husband " !!!!!!!!
@@way75mit9 That is exactly what I need to do and I can't figure out how to take the black cup housing off. I can't see a screw ,it won't pop off ... Did you figure it out . If so can you please let me know .Thank you way75 mit :)
I’m so frustrated over the stupidest thing. I’m not the original owner but I looked up the manual online. The black collar on the shaft is supposed to turn to loosen or lock so the shaft can be adjust and that thing will not turn no matter what. I am at a stand still. I took a wrench to it and just scuffed it up. I need to adjust the shaft. Grrr
