This is a step by step tutorial on how to dance John Playford's 17th century 3 couple English Country dance known as The Black Nag. Hope you enjoy learning this fun dance!
For anyone curious about what exactly the 'SCA' is -- The Society for Creative Anachronism is an international, non-profit educational organization that studies and recreates the medieval and Renaissance years of 600-1600AD.

Up a double, no hand grabbing, gent supports lady's hand on his hand. Then up a double ,three steps raise onto toes, back a double. Repeat. Turn singles usually follow the right shoulder to the right. Clockwise. Sidings, when you are right side to right side, raise up onto toes and down before returning to place. Repeat meeting left shoulder. Arming, no grabbing of hands, ladies forearm rests on gents forearm. Turn to the right. Repeat turning to the left. Not called a Hey. Reels along the side, gents then ladies. One and two always pass right shoulder first. Diagonal and cross passes are done back to back. Left shoulder leads when passing left, right shoulder leads when passing right. Again turn single to the right.

I find that dances such as this one can have some differences, depending on where they are being danced. For example, at an SCA event, the arming is as you said with the ladies' forearms resting on the men's forearms. However, when performing this dance for a university's Madrigal Dinner (set in 1570's with all ladies in hoopskirts), we held heavy hands for arming (so hands being held with our arms down). Another example of differences in dances depending on where they're danced would be Posties Jig. In the SCA, the head couple goes over the foot couple. When working at a Renaissance Festival, the dancers danced with the foot couple going over the head couple. The first time I danced this at the Ren Faire, I was almost clothes-lined by the other couple!

@@LynneFairchild Not sure what SCA and Ren Faire are but here in the UK Playford dances are always done in the way I describe. As for Posties Jig, bottom couple always make the arch. Maybe some of the notations for dances got lost in translation.😀 It happens.

The SCA is the Society for Creative Anachronism, an international non-profit organization that studies and recreates the medieval and Renaissance centuries. A good video explanation of the SCA is found at: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-046bs9DY7QY.html Ren Faire is another term for Renaissance Festival, which is great for spectators who want to watch but not necessarily participate in the historical recreation. For more information, check out this video out on the Texas Renaissance Festival: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_vPPgCmbpSs.html As for Playford's written instructions for Black Nag, please visit: playforddances.com/dances/black-nag/
