Recently, there has been a noticeable up-spike in violent crimes amongst Black people in Atlanta that has left people now calling Buckhead, the most expensive zip code in the city, the ghetto. An increase in shootings and robberies has also been realized on Miami Beach. Many times, the culprit is Black. The question is, why? What is going on amongst our culture that is breeding these types of individuals and what is going on in the world now that has emboldened these types of people? Let's discuss

This is not a race issue, it's a class issue. Black people aren't ready for that conversation. We're expected to walk on eggshells in order to not offend those with incarcerated family members and those who come from impoverished backgrounds.
@mssha1980

It’s both. Rural America doesn’t have as much crime as some of these inner cities. But I agree we need to stop acting like this behavior represents us as a whole.
@christophercatchings162

@@mssha1980 Very true, we are shamed for being "Karens" and calling the authorities on the riff raff. So many events catered towards Black people are ruined because we allowed the bad apples to stick around even after they have showed early signs they'll cause trouble. Like why avoid calling the cops to have an unruly person removed, when it most likely will lead to a deadly shootout?

This is TOO real for some of us to accept. Everybody is on board when we’re talking “black excellence” and “black love” and BLM. But nobody wants to accept that WE are responsible for a lot of our own negativity. Yes, you can trace these issues back to white people oppressing us, but WE perpetuate it. We’ve lost the James Baldwins, Maya Angelou’s, and now Cicely Tyson. Soon, the gangstas & thugs are going to be our elders... It’s seriously time to stop embracing ratchetness & elevate our lives.

I agree with you 100%. It is a conversation we need to have. My nephew was murdered by someone he hung out with on a daily and considered this person a friend. My question is: Why do we hate each other? Let's start the conversation there and to be completely honest, I'm scared of them too!

I’m sorry to hear about your nephew❤️ I agree. I wish we would start honest deep conversations like that. I was brought up to have the upmost respect for Blk people, to support Us, to love and honor Blackness and was taught that it would be returned. We took Feb serious in my school system and support of HBCUs and the Blk church. I grew up and experienced the real world. Most of the issues I’ve experienced were caused by other Blk people, even Blk women. 2020 caused the frustration of us to boil over and now...I’m over it. I want to love us again, I do, but🤷🏾‍♀️

There is a suburb in the San Francisco Bay area called Antioch. When it was built the homes were beautiful but they were less expensive because they’re farther out (it’s about 45-50 miles from downtown San Francisco).So black folks were able to buy these homes especially the ones getting out of the military. Everything was fine until somebody got the idea to send Pookie and them up here because he did not know how to act in the inner city and in close to 5-7 years they have completely destroyed Antioch. It’s so bad that the Taco Bell and McDonald’s that is in route from the high school close the doors in the afternoon you can only get service to the drive up windows. Why?, Because the black kids kept fighting in the parking lot and caring it over into the business establishment the business started to complain to the school but the school really can’t do anything because the kids were out of school. The police had to park in the lot after school. Another thing, somebody needs to tell these kids that are making all these babies that that will check you get is not guaranteed. The taxpayers are paying for your children and when things start to get tight they’re not gonna want to pay for your children that you keep having. How are you gonna look when somebody says were cutting your money off or cut it way back, then say, we’re going to give you a couple food stamps and maybe some medical care, but no more chick...then what will you do..

Think about what is happening in the bay that is pushing everyone out, some people do raise their children to be ghetto but some just fall into the trap, my brother lives there and he looks like a thug but he works and go home and cook. @ Marceline Myles You spoke truth to the way Antioch changed in just a few short years. I know a few people who moved away from Antioch due to the rising violence. Their property value went down and the parents who moved there with their bad azz kids were just as worse as the kids. The parents didn’t want to hear anything about their kids. The parents had attitude right along withers kids. My hair stylist moved away as well. Antioch used to be really nice but not anymore. Our people don’t value property. Sad.

When we as a community or nation don’t tend to our illnesses and issues; mental illness, self loathing, internalized hatred, patriarchal violence and hyper masculinity, trauma of all forms, etc you name it and continue to run away from it, it will visit us. Always! No matter how many separate islands (class divisions) we create or escape to to barricade ourselves away from the social decay, the detritus will always come back to our door! This is the T we are scared to talk about for fear of being race traitors but it's TRUE and while we understand all too well where a lot of this destructive behavior stems from, it's time to stop using it as a crutch. One of my favorite quotes: "If you're young and not a liberal, you have no heart; if you're old and not a conservative you have no brain" I'm old and I got sh!t to lose and I hate even typing this but I swear we gotta do better.
@Sndyj457

That quote is highly inaccurate. I’m liberal and I have plenty to lose and will never be a conservative because their policies are so regressive. I’m so glad you’re back and I got a chance to see this! You are absolutely right! This makes me think about a memorial weekend my bff got drunk and got separated from the group and a group of guys tried to walk her on the beach. Thank God another friend saw them and saved her. The same night there were gun shots where we all had to run down the strip for our lives and the same night I almost fought some girl because she was mad that I bumped her as if the streets aren’t crowded. That was my LAST memorial weekend on south beach! This reminds me of the convo I’ve been having with my peers about when do we talk about what is our “culture”, and when do we stop perpetuating trauma and generational curses and calling it culture!😑 I’m sickuud! I love when you talk about serious things like this! These conversation needs to be had and are just as important as the convos we have with white America! No more being the victims! What is not serving us: 70% of our children are born to parents who are not married to teach other. Forget about morality and the occasional anomaly of a successful single parent. Most of our black children in juvenile detention, most of our children who are in foster care, most of our young men in prison are guess what.....products of unmarried parents. Unless we address the breakdown of our family structure, we will not make significant progress.

What does marriage have to do with parents not raising their kids to go to school? Quentin is from a divorced home but he turned alright. The problem is not there... the problem is coddling and lying, most parents are not as invested in their kid’s upbringing as they used to. They leave things to TV, influencers and rappers 🤷🏾‍♀️ that is the issue, everything is fast : fast money, fast sex, fast life, fast everything. Going to school is not an option because everybody wanna be an entrepreneur or a RU-vidr or rapper or reality tv star but gets frustrated when they don’t get access to that fast lane

One of the biggest predictors for educational achievement is the level of parental involvement. The fact is that if mama is working all day and has to care for kids in the evening and dad is not in the home, there is only so much she can do. Now two parents tend to support each other (not dysfunctional parents who are in the home but aren't doing their part). The lack of education is a hell of a thing. I used to go into homes and barely see a book in the joint...just terrible! Trips to nearby libraries were not "a thing" in black communities. I felt embarrassed for my skin-folks. SMH.

I would like to see more community centers and mental health resources in urban areas. However it is scary to live with people who do things like this.
