Nizamabad is a small town in Azamgarh District situated about 100km (62 miles) north of Varanasi on the banks of river Tamsa, which feeds several lakes on the outskirts of the town.
The pottery of Nizamabad is characterized by its smooth lustrous black finish with sparkling motifs of silver grey etchings which resembles bidriware of Karnataka. The black finish is due to application of clay slip, polishing and reduction firing.
There are about 35 families still living in the town which is gradually diminishing.
In an effort to promote this craft, INTACH Delhi, organized a design development workshop with the artisans and made a documentary film.
We hope you would like the documentary. Also, we would love to hear your honest opinion/feedback.

Hats off to these gems of India, still keeping this Art alive. Use of Lead + Mercury without harming themselves is commendable. Thanks for this information INTACH.

Absolutely beautiful. So polished. Just magical, but I would think the mercury and lead poisoning is pure horror and is easily rectified by providing information. Skilled artisans like this should not be wasted.

Beautiful! My only concern though about using lead, zinc and mercury in the etched designs on these ceramic wares is that it would be unhealthy to cook food in these same decorative pots, while they are laid over a fire.

Beautifull. But i wished they'd be tauhgt about the dangers of lead and mercury. They shouldn't poison themselves while making these beautifull pieces of art.

Beautiful work but the handling of mercury is quite toxic on the bare hands and can lead to mercury poisoning.

Embellishing Pottery is not just made from clay but also involves the risk of life with a lack of health conditions and lightning in the furnaces or working areas.

Watching this makes me want to take a big ass boat to India, have these people load it down with pottery, bring the boat back to America and sell the pottery. These pieces could fetch a hundred bucks or more. These people should be well payed for their work.are making less than $10 day. That's a travesty. Exporting it could bring them four times that.

True, though the problem is import taxes from bringing it over, as well as shipping costs, and risk of damage along the way.

Didn't any of u people discussing how to profit from this watch the video? Women of the village are rubbing toxic metals into their skin (since skin is probably more likely to absorb led/mercury than pottery) I once saw something on the news of people living in refugee camps melting electronic wast to extract precious rare metals. I bet there is a great business opportunity for you to head over there and buy it from them. Imagine, you could probably double or triple their earnings. 🙄

@@olazabalwikstrom if you discourage the buyers by saying this so indirectly you are ruining their business which may get them on roads, so it is better to make them aware of it. A lot of articles we are using have some sort of poisonous or carcinogenic components but we are not aware of that..!

We are bringing these products online. Soon people from across world would be able to buy these products, and yes, prices will be decided by potters.
@SeleneSalvatore
@SeleneSalvatore 4 года назад
In utopy world yes, but in reality price be high but potters don't get much more becouse the buyers and selers in western world will take most of the cash. Also technic that is use to make patterns are extremely dengerus for women. Also the western people knowing that the patterns are make with led and mercury will do not buy it for safety reasons.

10:55 mercury! In the hand! That is very poisonous stuff! Lead too is poisonous. It's beautiful, but not worth the price of poisoning people. People are important! There must be a safer way than using lead and mercury.
