Black Rain is an underrated classic of 80s neo-noir. The whole style and music really elevate this above other action films of the time. Michael Douglas is just phenomenal as well.

Such an underrated gem. Charlie's death in this movie will always stick in my mind as one of the most upsetting deaths I've seen in a movie. He was one of those movie characters that you REALLY didn't want to die mainly due to how likeable he was and the fantastic performance given by Andy Garcia.

The movie's title is from Sugai's story about being a child near the end of WWII: “I was 10 when the B-29 came. My family lived underground for three days. We when came up the city was gone. Then the heat brought rain. Black rain. You made the rain black, and shoved your values down our throats. We forgot who we were.”

One of my favorite Scott movies. I was into anime and manga at the time and seeing Japan presented here was great. Not racist at all, just removing a bit of ignorance and arrogance that we Americans tend to have. Showing that the characters can learn to appreciate aspects of each other's culture and attitudes is what makes this movie rise. I'm sorry, but I think spoiling Charlie's death was wrong to do. I was shocked by it as he managed to come out okay in The Untouchables. But it really changed the dynamic of the film in a great way.

This is one of my all time favourite movies from 1989. It really is a underrated gem, Micheal Douglas gives a career best performance as the flawed Anti-hero cop. The score by Hans Zimmer is sublime, this was one of the few early Region 1 DVDs I ever bought and kept ever since. Very reawatchable, I highly recommend it. 💯👍

Michael Douglas is quite underrated as an action star and he's made some really good action movies in the 80s and 90's... Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile, BLACK RAIN, The Game, Falling Down, The Ghost and the Darkness, etc.. to name a few. Black Rain is just awesome, a great watch alongside The Yakuza (1974), The Challenge (1982), Rising Sun (1993) and The Hunted (1995).

Michael D was already into action when he was on tv in Streets of San Francisco with Karl Mulden and as a producer of one acclaimed film One flew over the cuckoo's nest and as an actor in China Syndrome with Jane Fonda and another film with Genevieve Bujold in the 70s.In the early 80s he didn't appeared that much until in '86 with Romancing the Stone with Danny deVito and Katherine .....(i forgot her last name)and a sequel(Jewel of the Nile).and successive movies like Wall Street,Basic Instinct,and a lot more in the 90s

I've always considered this movie a very good film. The atmosphere and history are so dense and dark. Even the main character, Nick, is an anti-hero, a man who has made questionable things in the past, a man far from moral perfection. Anyways, it has an special place in my film collection.
@haroonabassi1821

I've said this before I'll say it again. This movie was art. Each and every scene was framed and set up to perfection. The scene with the yakuza boss puffing on his cigar, all of the shots of Michael Douglas standing in the misty rice field when the bigger henchman throws him the shotgun shells. It's not meant to be the most real looking thing in the world but boy oh boy it is such a beautiful movie to watch. I'm so thankful for having gotten to watch this free on crackle but I need to watch this movie on blu ray or something super HD. I need to see every detail.

So many great lines and perfect performances. I was barely 12 when it came out in the UK but I was really shocked by the decapitation scene (even though I'd already seen Conan by then). A great film, with brilliant performances from Douglas and Takaura and a brilliant character introspection. However Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack is possibly his best, a beautiful action driven and melancholy score fused with Eastern influences and brilliant synth. Lived in Japan when this was made, had a bottle keep in one of the hostess clubs in the Umeda business district (Kita), and another in the down-market Shinsaibashi/ Namba area (Minami), which I still have. Colleague's company provided one of the interpreters on the film, credited. Told me that Andy Garcia was a delight to work with, but that Michael Douglas was the complete opposite! Went out and was taken to more than a few hostess clubs on 'business entertainment', but never saw one that large, even the so-called VIP clubs, it looked more like a Hong Kong place like Club Boss. Some of the film was also shot in the USA, due to difficulties shooting in Japan, e.g the winery is in Napa Valley California (but very similar to one in Hyogo Japan, just North-West of Osaka).

Great piece, but you did mention “Scott’s vision of Tokyo.” It’s Osaka. I’m sure I’m not the first one to mention this. It was a really good idea to film there as a) it was bombed to smithereens during WW2 and rebuilt in a brutalist style, b) the Kansai region has considerably more visible gang activity and c) it’s cheaper.

The stereotypes in this movie are actually pretty accurate (I've spent a total of 8 months in Japan over the years) & the music/score is stunning. Hands down my favourite Michael Douglas and Ridley Scott movie. This is not just an 80s action movie, it’s actually a great film overall. There’s a much deeper subtext behind it that I’m surprised hasn’t been mentioned much. The film isnt just about catching a Yakuza leader but also about a man overcoming his racism, Douglas in the first half is very disrespectful to the Japanese but in the second half that gradually changes. Those who called it ‘racist’ I think missed the point, the film is partially about ‘racism’ itself two very different things. It’s a tremendously powerful film that really gets better on repeat viewings, the first time I watched it was on VHS when I was 16 and I liked it ok but I didn’t think I’d revisit it. But about 10 yrs later i rewatched it on Blu-Ray and It was much better and deeper than I remembered it. Hans Zimmers score is also my favourite work of his, love the east meets west vibe, back when Zimmer knew you could have more than two notes in music.

I mean most people criticize how Douglas is just playing another cliche 80s mullet cladded, loose cannon cop, but I feel he's a bit more unique when comparing him to other characters from that era like John McClane or Martin Riggs. Black Rain is probably one of the best films to come out in 1989... right after Road House and Tango & Cash.

Black Rain was such a good movie, had a solid cast and a good story. Combine this with Rising Sun, and The Hunted, we really see early 80's 90's interpretations of US and Japanese culture colliding and how at the time people reacted to it. Keep in mind the hilarity of people calling these films racist is highly overblown, and usually an outcry of people talking out the butt, I laugh when people talk about Big Trouble in Little China and try associating modern day SJW values, but not actually seeing the context nor understanding it.

👍 Great film, great review. One small point: The character of Sato wasn’t trying for supremacy of the Yakuza in Tokyo. The film was set in, and partly shot in, Osaka.

I'm sure I'm not saying anything unique but "Sato" was a legend in my group of friends.
