In this module, we discuss Jenny Mitchell’s poem ‘Black Rapunzel’, focusing on: (i) her goal to depict Black men as complex, multi-dimensional individuals; (ii) an analysis of the poem and how she uses language to allude to the enslavement of black men and women; (iii) Emma Dabiri’s book Don’t Touch My Hair (2019); and (iv) systemic racism in the criminal justice system and in mental health.
