@@autumnphillips151 So did my dad and grampa. I've been living in that shadow for a while. Luckily I've not written anything worth changing my name to publish.
It's funny to hear your daughter say this music "is expected" because when this came out NOTHING sounded like this, this was a innovative band, they invented their own genre. So what she should be saying is everything after this is "expected"
Yeah it is hard for someone young hearing this pioneering music for the first time to put it in any context. Like the guy said, Sabbath were doing there thing years before even he was born, there's been half a century since of bands influenced by Sabbath and Zepp so she's bound to say what she did.
Every rock band had long hair back then, it was a powerful statement of rebellion. Men with long hair were subjected to hate and ridicule from the mainstream.
As a 56 year old African American male I would like to say that I am really thrilled to see a younger generation of AM''s listened to and analyzing this music is special, because back in my day this was considered as white boy music, but in the real world we true music lovers can listen to and enjoy all types of music
I’m a 71 year old African American male and I saw them in concert in 1972 when I was a 20 year old puppy. I was into “ white boy music “ and had a ball. I also saw Alice Cooper,Grand Funk Railroad,Jethro Tull,Z Z Top,Stevie Ray Vaughan and many more. I was well ahead of the curve. 🎸🎸🎸
@@sydneycarton9973 There’s two eras of music. Before Hendrix and after Hendrix. When he died I was told about it but really didn’t know who he was. I stated listening to his music during the summer of 1971 which was about eight or nine months after he died. I’ve been an avid Hendrix since then. 🎸
Black Sabbath were born and raised in the same city as me, Birmingham, UK aka The Birthplace of Heavy Metal. FUN FACT: This song was written in about 15 minutes as a filler track to complete the album it features on.
Lead guitarist, Tony Iommi lost two fingertips in a metal press, so he made himself a replacement set. Those artificial fingertips contribute to his unique sound.
Thanks for your comment. I just left my own above before seeing yours here. Maybe you can help my memory: I think I read that the band had decided to go full-time with the music and it was the last day or so before leaving the factory that Tommy had this accident?
@@Inadougadavida I'm not really sure. I saw a VH-1 rock-doc several years ago about Black Sabbath. That's where I learned about his accident, but I don't remember much more about it. I don't know if you could find the documentary online, or not.
@@Inadougadavida Before Black Sabbath formed Tony worked in a sheet metal factory. he had decided to quit that day to become a professional musician and wasn't going to come back after his lunch break, but his mother badgered him into it. Tony was a welder but the guy who ran the stamping press didn't show up so they had him trying to run the machine and he got his hand in the wrong place. Tony was going to just give up on music until a friend gave him a record by the three-fingered Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and convinced him that he could still play with his maimed hand.
This reaction was hilarious when you realized that was Ozzy singing. Ozzy was the original singer. he was later replaced by Ronnie James Dio. Due to Ozzy's heavy drug use. Please react to Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell Dio is vocals.
My dad had hair like that in those days lol I was born when this album debuted, my 50th birthday is this Sunday :) time flies folks, love each other :)
@@islander_67lilbrownguy30 Thank you kindly sir :) Yes it does, I remember 30 like yesterday lol The worst part of aging for me is saying goodbye to your loved ones. You take care and have many birthdays to come :)
Black Sabbath were the inventors of Heavy Metal. Their album Master if Reality is still ahead of its time. This band is Heavy Metal personified. Each one is a master at their craft. Ozzy also once but the head off a dove. When he signed as a solo artist with CBS Records they were going to release a dove as a symbolic gesture. The dove died of natural causes right before the press conference. Ozzy but the head of and it scared the shut out of those people. They didn’t know the dove was already dead. Then people started throwing fake bats in stage. One wasn’t fake and Ozzy had to get treated for rabies...
I came out of the womb to this song they are without a shadow of a doubt the founders of heavy metal the band where pioneers millions of bands would not be here without the influence of Sabbath
Oh my God!! I am 66 years old and they have always been my favorite bad Black Sabbath , the Eagles and Led Zeppelin were my favorite bands when I started listening to them I was around 15 years old !!! Love Ozzie !!!!!!
Haha! When you realize it's Ozzy singing!! BTW, Ozzy bit off the bats head. Love your reactions Van and your daughter (I won't try spelling her name because I would butcher it) has some great reactions to this genre as well. Love it!
I was 11 years old when I first listened to this album. I started growing my hair long and rocked out to some of the best rock music ever in the 70's. 🎸🤘🇺🇸
Bill ward and Geezer Butler (drums and bass) are the tightest rhythm section in rock. They work so well together. When one swings the other plays it straight. then they'll switch. Yeah, it's Ozzy of the Osbournes tv show. Tony Iommi, the Riffmeister on guitar. This is the band who were the main progenitors of heavy metal and stoner rock.
This band started the Heavy Metal genre know by us fans as The Fathers of Heavy Metal, the have been together for over 50 years i went to their last concert & it was awesome great reaction dude
The hair is part of the era. There were alot of bands that had hair like that. There was also a genre called Hair Metal! You must have seen those type of bands. :) Sabbath used to throw rubber bats and bugs into the crowd at some concerts... So during that concert, somebody threw the bat on the stage, and Ozzy thought it was a fake one and as a stunt, he bit it's head but it was too late when he realized that it was an actual dead bat! :D
In the late 60s/early 70s, the longer the hair, the more rebellious you were considered to be. If you want to know something truly amazing about this group, look into the story of lead guitarist Tony Iommi and the accident he had to overcome to become such a great guitarist.
Great reaction guys to a AWESOME Sabbath track.....I feel alot of the beauty of ROCK and METAL music comes from the fact that each element of the track, ie Guitar, bass, Drums, vocals all come together to make an awesome piece of music and No individual is focused on and often at LIVE rock shows you will hear Lead guitar breaks, Drum solos, and Bass solo parts and all this shifts the focus to each person showing their individuals talents....Geezers Stunning BASS parts, and Iommis stunning lead guitar, along with Bill Wards outstanding drumming, all dropped into a barrel then sprinkled with OZZY and his vocals and you have a recipe for a legendery band....
Geezers bass guitar makes the lead guitar and drums sound so much bigger right here. He is a complete legend to those who know. This band is the MVPs ever in one band. Every single member is perfect for the sound. It's easy to get complacent growing up on awesome shit like this.... that's why we watch you bro. Brings back a bit the euphoria when I first discovered it.
One of my favorite songs... grew up on this 🤘🏻and u sad u did war pigs that’s definitely one of my favorites from Black Sabbath I hope there’s a video of that one, I’m going to look for it lol
Your daughter is awesome! I have a 14 year old girl who's a Beatles aficionado but your girl is able to listen to other genres and appreciate them. You done well daddy!
Black Sabbath is considered by many to be the band that started heavy metal... there were a few heavy metal songs out before Black Sabbath but they were the first band that played only heavy metal
Bill Ward on drums and Geezer Buttler on bass, some animals leading the band forward. The best band in history with Deep Purple and Ronnie James Dio. Dehumanizer and Born Again they are Black Sabbath albums with members of those bands and Rainbow is part of Deep Purple with Dio. All spectacular.
The song "Paranoid" reach number 4 in the UK charts. It's the song that that got them recognition, and launched the album of the same name to huge success. The birth of "Heavy Metal"
Great reaction. Can't go wrong with some Sabbath! More Black Sabbath songs to react to: - Iron man - Heaven & Hell (dio) - War pigs - Into the void - Sweet leaf - Changes - Electric funeral - NIB - The wizard - Fairies wear boots - Sabbath bloody sabbath - Symptom of the universe - Supernaut - Children of the grave - Children of the sea (dio) Would love to see these reactions!!
Yes Ozzy as a solo artist had what he thought was a fake bat thrown on stage and bit it's head off. Secondly, all rockers at that point had the long hair, so Sabbath like all the others had the long locks. It was not unique to them.
The hair! My hair, even at 58, is that long! I'm a rocker, I'm a roller, I'm a right out of controler! I'm a winner, I'm a sinner, I'm a wicked women stealer! I'm a rocker, I'm a roller! I'm a rocking rollin' man! Guitar! (Bon Scott- AC/DC) Thank you for jammin' this!
This is one of the first songs any guitar player learns. I used to play it so much that this is literally the first time ive heard this song in 10 years. Glad I waited sounds amazing again.
Fun fact: when they were recording the LP the producer told them they still had 3 mins and they recorded this song in a couple hours (i guess) and put it in the LP
Yes, that is Ozzy. The bat story is blown way out of proportion. The crew was throwing rubber bats into the crowd, knowing people would throw them around (bats being associated with horror movies, vampires, etc) to add to the show. Some people started throwing the rubber bats onstage, and the rubber bats attracted real bats (because of their sonar). Ozzy caught one of the real bats, thinking it was a rubber one, and bit its head off. Once he realized it was a real bat, he was mortified by what he had just done.
This band are the founders of "HEAVY METAL" All Metal Guitar Riffs come from guitarist Tony Iommi :-) BTW the song got them known. It reached no 4 in the UK charts
Black Sabbath the Godfathers of heavy metal. Vocals Ozzy Osbourne Guitar Mr. Tony Iommi, Bass Mr. Geezer Butler, an on drums Mr. Bill Ward. They paved the way for future rock an metal bands for years to come and they themselves ruled the scene in the early 70’s. My all time favorite band!! Oh yes Ozzy did indeed bite the head off a bat but that wasn’t during his Sabbath years it was years later after he was fired an was during his solo career. Fun fact also bit the head off a dove during a promotional meeting for his debut solo album lol. He certainly is a legend for sure an I hope you check more of his music catalog out because its deep an spans many decades.
In lockdown like most of the world. Stumbled across your videos and am enjoying them. Am a big rock/metal fan but have a very eclectic taste. You should try out mimi and josefine blind audition on voice kids Germany doing a version of creep by Radiohead. Absolutely amazing
Underrated drummer - Chad Sexton. Check out 311's song Applied Science live. Chad does excellent drum solo's and at the end the whole band actually joins in. Seen it live multiple times and it always gives goosebumps
All the bands hair was the focus then - 'heavy metal' was a phrase that came out of this late 60s era, that Blues bands created 'metal' and that early scene was around Birmingham and the towns and area around there - this was a massive steel industry area and all of Black Sabbaths fathers / uncles / brothers worked in the steel industry all their lives - hence the phrase 'heavy metal' for those bands
This was a completely new type of music back then. The birth of metal. Hence why the drum kit is so small. They weren't catering for that sort of music. Rock was the heaviest genre until then. And the drummers name is Bill Ward.
Ha ha! Yeah, Black Sabbath wasn’t just the pioneers of Heavy Metal, but also the fathers of 80’s hair bands! 😂😂😂 Was all part of the head banging movement!
I was 13 years old in '70. I grew up with the greatest music and by far the most talented musicians of all time. Took Real Talent back then. No can or box vocalists.
Like it or not (and I like it) your becoming a metal head! I'm 58 and was born in NYC- I lived in Michigan most of the time but I went back home in 1979- and discovered the Sugar Hill Gang, because I lived with my Grandma in the Bronx. And I loved it. And I was a Michigan metalhead!
oh my good ness... six minutes into a seven minute video and you finally... THAT'S OZZY OSBOURNE!!! And the band, if not the song and the album that Gave Birth to the whole genre of Heavy Metal.... hahaha.... thanks for the reactions, hope to see and hear more from y'all.....
Their hair just happens to be clean. In 1970 none of this was expected. They had a sound all their own and you can thank them for their influence since.
One of the founding fathers of Metal. I loved when you recognized ozzy. The Bat thing, he thought it was a fake bat lol, but he also bite the head off a dove too.
So thank you and your daughter for this reaction loved it. Have to say I almost died and laughed when you said that’s Ozzy Osbourne. Yes two more Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osborne.😃👍🌼✌️ PS this is From a mom with daughters in their 20s. Your daughter is beautiful and smart nice. You must of done some stuff really right.🌼✌️
In 1979-1980 Ozzy went into the CBS exec meeting to get backing for The Blizzard of Ozz --- the beginning of his solo career, he had two white doves in his pocket. The plan was to throw them into the air and let them fly around the room as a promotional stunt. Ozzy, let one loose and it flew around the room as planned. He bit the head off of the other and threw it on the table.
The drummer is Bill Ward. The Bassist is Geezer Butler. The Guitarist is Tony Iomi. Ozzy is singing. Every member of this band is legendary status in their own right. They are all masters of their craft and among the best players with their own instruments. Black Sabbath is pretty widely considered to be the godfathers of heavy metal. theres a few other bands that put out similar sounding music all around 68-69 that could make the claim, but Sabbath were the band that made this sound POPULAR. Check out The Wizard or Fairies Wear Boots
One of the best guitarists in the world at the time used to play with ozzy in black sabbath: Randy Rhoads. Died in a plane crash. If you wanna hear him play, try mr. crowley or crazy train.
As far as the bat goes, his wife Sharon explains it on Steve O's podcast "Wild Ride". If I remember right it was a meeting with a record executive and Ozzy released a live dove in the room and then pulled a dead dove out his other pocket, bit its head off, spit it in the lap of the guy in charge, and threw the carcass on the table or something.
The drummer is bill ward the bass player is geezer butler and the guitarist is Toni iomhi kick ass guitar player a legend the crazy thing about him he cut 3 of his finger tips off in an accident made his own finger tips and he plays like that black Sabbath are the god father's of heavy metal they started it all
