Heavy Metal band Black Sabbath recently had their first number one album in the UK for nearly 43 years.
Asked about whether the band had performed in a way that played up to their Satanic image, the band's guitarist Tony Iommi told HARDtalk's Shaun Ley they had "dabbled" in the occult in the early days, but said they had never been Satanists.
"It was creating music, and that's all I do. I don't try to create anything to destroy people or to upset anybody," he added.
Iommi also discussed the band's past drug use: "If I'd have known, what I know now, I certainly would not have dabbled to that extent. I don't think any of us would."

+Rex Jansen those that see Satan in Black Sabbath are only bringing their own demons to the surface and projecting them on others. no matter how religious the are they all have hidden demons somewhere hiding inside that needs to be dealt with. why not just blame our insecurities on others. everyone else does it. I'm sure BBC has reaked just as much havoc in people's lives with all the propaganda they spread. nobody committed suicide over Black Sabbath vocals. Something else drew them to that level and that experience allowed them to play the song the wrong way in their head. it's not black sabaths fault the message of the song was received innacurately

When Moral Majority types talked about heavy metal being "devil's music" way back in the 70/80s it was laughable. And to rehash it 40 years later to sound like you are asking "hard" questions just sounds ridiculous.

Those qualities alone make them a great resource for musicians who care to listen. I mean, these are guys that actually created something. Go to the source.

We who listen to this type of music already gravitate towards depression and this is cathartic for us, if we lose this battle it’s not the music that caused it, we just finally get to low or just give up. I also turn to God for help. Does this mean it’s his influence on why we give up on our battles, no, if you don’t feel this up and down roller coaster you cannot understand. For everyone who relates please don’t stop fighting because you are loved and we are in this together.

What is called the devils tri-tone is a misconception! Most forms of music use it!!! It's a natural phenomenon within our 12 tone system. It's all myth! Bach who wrote for the church, (among many composers), used it in everything! The primary way of using it then was, it had to resolve, but by the time the Romantic era emerged, it wasn't necessary. Which means it isn't today!!!! To put it plainly: NO SUCH THING AS THE DEVILS TRI-TONE!!!!!!! In fact, the title tune was influenced by the 20th century composer "Gustav Holst" piece "The Planets". The 1st movement "Mars Bringer Of War" opens up with the 1st two intervals being a Tri-Tone!

when i was 12 my religous uncle sent me a religous spandex Rock album "Stryper, to hell with The Devil". i took it back to the record shop and traded it fer Black Sabbaths Paranoid Album. i opened it up saw 4 long hair dudes with crosses and dingle balls , they looked fer real . The opening track War Pigs was so fucking heavy with the bomb sierns going off that i took the album off and played their first album fer a few more days. War Pigs rattled me like John lennons Tomorrow Never Knows, it through me fer a loop cause it was so fucking heavy, maybe cause i was 12 but War Pigs remains the heaviest Rock Song of all time and yet what is it really , its Blues , Blues rock, their first album was Blues , Paranoid was Blues Rock (but so bloody heavy and so sweet on viny) Masters and all after Was Rock. The cocaine simply fueled their creativity for a few years , its a stimulant , speed is the same thing. The Beatles relied on diet pills in Hamburg then later Strong Amphetamines which helps the long hours in studios and relentless touring and can help creativity but it can bite you in the ass and usaually does in the end. it comes down to feel and thats Blues , Tony had a limited vocabulary of a Blues scale yet he turned out riff after monstrous riff .The original line up of Black Sabbath were the heaviest rock Band of the day and on every album , even the not so good ones at the end of ozzys term, there are still wicked riffs and a few gems . Thank You Tony for giving us years of killer wicked tunes and riffs. People dont play like this anymore , cause its from the heart and in todays world sincerity seems to be a lost cause...

However, when queried about how Ozzy was put out of Black Sabbath, he didn't mention that it was he himself, that gave the order to fire Ozzy...and yet, wouldn't "Do the deed" to Ozzy's face, himself. He had Bill Ward, the Drummer, break the news to Ozzy, that Ozzy had been fired from Black Sabbath. As we all know, Ozzy took that firing very badly...but who can blame him for that? Ah, well...it is what it is.
@TheMack

@@ronaldshank7589 Totally agree! Although Ozzy has said later that him getting fired "was the best thing that could happen" since he then got to do his solo stuff. Sure, Dio filled the spot, but Ozzy got a great fresh new start with a killer band and guitarist Randy Rhoads. Suggesting that Black Sabbath was somehow responsible for the suicide is the epitome of ignorance. As a mental health professional of more than 20 years, I can tell you that people don't kill themselves because of a song on the record player. There has to be a hell of a lot of other stuff going on in their lives and in their minds to bring them to that dark place where all hope is lost. Paranoid caused a woman to kill herself? Irresponsible, hurtful and incredibly uninformed comment. This interviewer should apologize, and change his routine or take up another career. Tony responded with a lot of class.

Rubbish! you know nothing about Sabbath, listen to lyrics, read the lyrics, it's about the dark side of life, it was and still is a reality. Even the bible doesn't just talk about the brighter side of life, we wouldn't need to read it if it was only about one aspect of life. Sabbath just told it like it is. War Pigs for example was a reflecting on war and corrupt politicians after their own greed, not thinking about the consequence when facing God in judgement. The song Black Sabbath was inspired by an experience Geezer had with an evil spirit that he suspected was conjured by an occult book Ozzy lent him and he threw it away asap! And it was the record's company for all their record covers. So as the old saying goes, you can't judge a book by it's cover. The only thing you could say was morally wrong was the drug dependance, which they regretted later. As far as their music being imbedded with occult witchcraft with subliminal brainwashing with suicidal undertones, I myself have been listening to their music since the early 80's and was never influenced or inspired to go into the occult or satanism, nor was I inspired to kill myself. So there you go.

How someone interprets those lyrics and may act upon their interpretation of the lyrics is completely the responsibility of that person. I read another comment about this stating (I’m paraphrasing) that the music doesn’t lead people down a certain road because they are already on that road. It looks like Tony is taken aback by this Cheese Dicks questions. Perhaps in the days of his youth he would have just given the idiot a Turkish crescent snap kick to the head. He could have, however, just given the ill considered questions some simple responses that would have turned the tables . Here's a couple or examples: 1. When Cheese Dick mentions the diminished 5th (or diabolus in musica) in their music(1:00), Tony confirms it. Then Cheese Dick straight way mentions that Paranoid was playing on a turntable of a girl who killed herself. The fact that Tony hadn't written any riffs with the diminished 5th for that song doesn't seem to matter to Cheese Dick. Iommi should have set his straight there. 2. Also Cheese Dick mentions at 2:35 that the lyrics to After Forever were written on the walls at the Son Of Sams apartment. If anyone reads these lyric (which Cheese Dick obviously hasn't) they are quite blatant CHRISTIAN lyrics and as as far from satanic as they ever got. Black Sabbath are about as responsible for the Son Of Sam murders as Mother Teresa was.

For the Record: the inverted cross is known as "St Peter's Cross." It is not "Satanic" or any such nonsense. It is a revered symbol in Catholicism, and refers to the Apostle Peter, who was crucified by the Romans upside-down (according to tradition, he did not feel worthy to die the same way as Christ). Yeah, I know, facts are stubborn things. And Iommi is right about the first BS album cover; the cover photo and inverted cross were created by the record label, without the band's consent. Whoops.

I find it interesting that he would associate the lyrics from a Sabbath song with the Son of Sam killings. As Tony points out, the lyrics were written by Geezer Butler, who is actually a bit of a pacifist, hippie. Geezer has also been a vegan since the 60's, if that sheds any light on his frame of mind. To suggest that his lyrics were in any way responsible for inciting a deranged individual to commit murder is pretty pathetic.
@Arc333Angel
@Arc333Angel 10 лет назад
Also, the song on the wall was about God being the "way to love" and the answer to "sin and hate." After Forever is a song that reflects the band's Catholic roots, Geezer's in particular. Suggesting that this somehow motivated murder comes across as grossly irresponsible and badly misinformed. Has this interviewer ever listened to a Black Sabbath song? Doesn't seem like it.

***** As I understood it, no one said that the lyrics were culpable to what Son of Sam had been doing...but that he had associated those words with Black Sabbath and that secret murderous path he walked. Priest actually went to court over it after the families tried to sue them. The judge ruled in favor of the band, stating that, "someone intent on suicide can certainly use a song, a book, a movie or any medium of art as a vehicle to drive their intent, but they alone are responsible for their actions."
