I love "Technical Ecstacy" and "Never Say Die". Of course the earlier albums were heavier and better but these two later 70's albums were both very good to me too.

So do I. T. E. was one I played the hell out of at the time. Recently I revisited it . After 1 or 2 full listens I warmed back up to it. THen I had to hear bits and pieces everytime I sat down for weeks. ALL MOVING PARTS STAND STILL. Backstreet kids. GYPSY are really cool. As for N.S.D. it happen s to contain one of my all time favorites. SHOCKWAVE . Even enjoy SWINGIN THE CHAIN . THe only com.plaint are some of the solos sound like demo tracks. They could have been mixed with a little more sizzle in the production.

Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die are absolute masterpieces! I don’t think there would so much debate about them if they were from another band not Sabbath. They are so creative and yes sound different and very diverse. But they are genius. Every single song has something special. Love them as much as any other early Sabbath albums. I don’t even care whether the band members like them or not. Too much personal emotions going on that we, the luck listeners, don’t need to know about. Let the music speak for itself and to me those two albums are brilliant.

I don't know how anyone can say 'Never Say Die' is a forgettable album if they've ever listened to it even once. The title track is great. Johnny Blade, Junior's Eyes? There's some heavy stuff in there. As with every album, I like some songs more than others. But overall, I like it. 'Do you know that Johnny's a Spider? And his web is the city at night' - love the riff in that part of Johnny Blade.

I was obsessed with Sabotage. SBS and Master too, but Sabotage was my album. Then when Technical Ecstasy came out, other than Dirty Women, which is a great track, especially live, I just couldn’t stand it. They lost the script after Sabotage. Never Say Die was part two. There are some decent songs, but overall you could tell Sabbath were struggling mightily. Then the tour. OMG. I saw Van Halen finish that line up of Sabbath. Wow. It was a thrashing.

Musically , I think those albums are great ( although the last couple of tracks of Never Say Die very much suggest the end of an era ) . If Rock 'n' Roll Doctor ( or even Back Street Kids ) had been a hit single in the states then none of this would be an issue . They all loved Technical Ecstasy when it was released ... I first saw them live in '78 at Newcastle City Hall with Van Halen opening up . Both bands were absolutely tremendous ( one of the best gigs I've ever attended ) ... I find it a bit tedious listening to rich middle aged icons complaining about how awful it was making albums in Miami amongst all of those recreational distractions ( which they obviously enjoyed , even back in their earlier "classic" era ) . Hey Ho , It's a shit business ! ... By the end of 1980 Ozzy's Blizzard of Ozz had been really well received as had Sabbath's Heaven and Hell with Dio ( both outfits again delivering great live shows in Newcastle UK ) .

Time has been kind to Technical Ecstacy and Never Say Die. There are some fine moments on both those albums. Yes, they are not as good as the early stuff. Under the conditions of management problems and drugs they struggled to keep it going. Ozzy needed to break away and what Sabbath needed a new singer. Both went to new heights after the breakup.

I don't see anything bad about Technical Ecstasy. I like Back Street Kids & Dirty Women - those are really outstanding songs, with a rich, engaging character. Although, I have not been a life-long fan of Black Sabbath, and I am probably speaking from a distant point of view; but overall, I like the album, Sabotage the best. Maybe I am coming from the point of view of someone who enjoys progressive rock. I like it when songs have a unique sound, different from the typical rock & roll, and songs that keep a strong groove. (Since everybody has different tastes, I tried to describe why I like these songs.)

I just listened to Technical Ecstasy from beginning to end on RU-vid the other day. I can give a fair, honest, truthful, & well informed opinion on it based on actually having listened to it myself instead of relying on second hand opinions of it by other people. TE isn't bad, it isn't as terrible as a lot of people think. Back Street Kids, It's Alright, Rock N Roll Doctor, & Dirty Women are all standout tracks, but as a whole, the album still doesn't quite measure up to their past albums. It's too inconsistent and uneven for my tastes. It's slightly above average but still better than Never Say Die. I've also heard the latter album in its entirety and it really was the beginning of the end for the Mark 1 70s lineup.

Music is such a personal and subjective experience for those like myself that become totally immersed in it. So how is it that music writers/journalists/critics etc.. almost always trot out the same narrative? LIke the accepted take on Technical Ecstacy and Never Say Die being garbage by a defeated drugged out band. I get that it was a hard time for them for a myriad of reasons, but lets not forget that the drugs are not always an obstacle to making great records. Relationships are a different story. There we logical understable reasons for them experimenting with their sounds and even songwriting that are outside the scope of a reasonable length comment. I see both these albums as flawed genius. I love these records because they bring out aspects of their songwriting and multidimensional musicianship that almost no other heavy rock band could equal in terms of scope and conviction. The main flaw of these albums , if one wants to really be honest and in context of the times, is that Sabbath's classic output was too heavy and outside the mainstream for most, and by 1976-78 the ever-fickle music trends had not place for any version of Sabbath to comfortably occupy as far as label support was concerned and it was just not a fashionable and popular time to be black Sabbath. Sometimes life is cruel that way, but they are brave, unique and often fantastic albums in their own right. Make up your own minds - do not believe the common narrative about these records. They are different but also great for very different reasons in my opinion. I play NSD frequently to this day.

i think many of the "i love TE /NSD" commenters would have to admit there was a falloff after sabotage- Their first 6 albums are all "bangers" as the kids say- the last 2, meh.......

ACDC had a fall off during the albums after Back In Black and before The Razor's Edge albums. But ACDC fans will tell you there were great albums between them.

Both TE and NSD are better than anything released after Ozzy left. They are great records that get a bad rap for no other reason than a critics echo chamber. Never Say Die is the better of the 2 and is far superior to Heaven and Hell as far as I'm concerned.

Good album , suffers from poor production. Shame this album and Never say die are much overlooked Never say die is OUTSTANDING.

What a load of crap! Never Say Die, if not a great album, is certainly a very good album, a shade better than the previous one.

Don’t listen to these weirdos in this video: both albums have very good tunes, perhaps far removed from the stuff they wrote before, but great nonetheless.

My band used to do “Dirty Women” and “Rock&Roll Doctor” and they went over great! There was only one good song on Never Say Die and that was, well, “Never Say Die”. The rest were not Sabbath worthy. Sorry.

@@davidmacleod9313 you're kidding right? Juniors Eyes and Johnny Blade are right up there with any other Sab tunes. Technical Ecstasy is a very strong album too. You Won't Change Me, Dirty Women, it's Alright, Rock'n'Roll Doctor. I meanw what's not to like? Those critics are shite. I can't take them seriously. Not sure why Sabbath doesn't seem to like much on Technical Ecstasy, I'm miffed. Probably weren't thinking like that when the albums came out. So that documentary is lazy, half asked production. They should have had a real Sabbath fan make it.

I could not agree with Krusher any more strongly. Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die were crap. For me, they are the 2 blots on the copybook. Dehumanizer and 13 i'd put next on that list if asked.

Pretty good album but I wish they'd left off Bill Ward's song "It's Alright" as it's bloody awful. Completely spoils the album. Just like his singing on the "Never Say Die!" album song "Swinging the Chain". Remove those two songs and those two albums would have been so much better (IMHO).
