You forgot that General Moore aka Simon Oakland, Col. Lard aka Dana Elcar , the real Pappy Boyington aka General Harrison Kenlay, Msgt. Mickland aka Red West all pasted away
I remember when Robert Conrad appeared on a TV talk show to promote the show around the time it first went on the air (I don't remember which talk show it was). He was dressed in a Marine Corps flight suit that he wore in the show. He said he hoped the series was successful, one reason being he needed the money. The late Frank Walton, who served as the intelligence officer of the real Black Sheep, wrote a book on the squadron around forty years ago, called "Once They Were Eagles." He mentions the TV show and took a rather dim view of it, calling it, "the usual Hollywood hokum, featuring drunken brawls and jiggly nurses," while the pilots were portrayed inaccurately as "fugitives from courts-martial." Apparently, some of the Black Sheep veterans were not happy with the real Boyington being involved with the show, and they let him know about it. He responded, "I only did it for the money." I've been to Boyington's grave at Arlington National Cemetery, he is buried in section 7A, which is also where Marine Corps ace Joe Foss is buried. Other well known men buried in that section include film star Lee Marvin, legendary boxer Joe Louis, General Jimmy Doolittle, ABC newsman (and US Army veteran) Frank Reynolds, and former Marine Corps commandant General David Shoup.
Back in the early 1980's I used to see Greg Boyington hanging out at air shows selling his books and other memorabilia. He was as colorful in person as was the portrayal of him in Black Sheep Squadron. It was definitely fun to watch him do cameo's on Black Sheep Squadron.
I wouldn't say Robert Conrad "died too soon." He lived 42 years after "Blacksheep" ended and passed on at age 84. I was unaware that Robert Ginty and Jeff MacKay had passed. Now, those two died relatively young and "too soon." Probably my favorite episode was from the first season, "Anyone for Suicide?" where a few of them go on a secret mission to sink a ship in a narrow strait. It involved landing on an out-of-service airstrip on a Japanese-held island to wait for word on when the ship would be near the strait. Robert Ginty had a prominent role in that one, as did Robert Conrad, Dirk Blocker, and James Whitmore, Jr. There may have been another pilot on the mission (John Larroquette?) but I am not sure enough to say and I couldn't find the information beyond the cast for the entire episode.
I encountered Robert Conrad about ten years ago, when I had a BG job at Warner Brothers. He was visiting Stephen J. Cannel at a soundstage nearby. He walked by me,dragging his foot along.I was shocked at his appearance.I nodded at him,he nodded back.
Glad to know that you had the chance to see Robert personally. Thank you so much for sharing your life story. Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
Robert Conrad was driving drunk in California in 2003 when he crossed the centerline and was involved in a head on collision. He was partially paralyzed on his right side, He was never the same again, and that incident took a lot out of him on several levels. I remember his classic race against Gabe Kaplan in "Battle of the Network Stars".
When I was 13, the whole cast in costume came to San Diego for a fundraiser towards a young boy paralyzed playing football. I followed Robert Conrad into the airport bar at Montgomery Field and used my Kodak instamatic to get pictures with him all the while trying not to get thrown out. To this day I regret not getting photos of John Larroquette...
This show is on at 6:00 and 7:00 pm on Saturdays on the channel, HandI, which means Heroes and Icons. It shows reruns of popular series from the past. There are so many familiar faces in the cast!
Gold Monkey was why they killed him off in Magnum, The failure of Gold Monkey was why he went back to the Producers of Magnum and said I need a job. He was so well liked that they created the new character for him
@@mikeb.7183 Thanks for the info. I didnt know that. Found a few Eps of Gold Monkey in Utube . (During that series I was in the midst of an U G L Y divorce, I didnt watch much TV. LOLOLOLOL)
Soon-Tek Oh was in several episodes of MASH. One of the photos in the video was from MASH. I met Pappy Boyington at Oshkosh in 1980 and went to his funeral at Arlington in 1988.
@@daleburrell6273 I don't think they mentioned that in Rocky Horror. The song is Science Fiction Double Feature. That's where I learned half of what I know about Anne Francis. You told me the other half lol.
I had the biggest crush on Robert Ginty. He had the cutest smile and the twinklest eyes. He also had a short lived tv show Hawaiian Heat. Bad time slot killed it chances for success, which was too bad since it was an excellent show. I was sorry to see Jeff McKay passed. I didn't know he was gone. And yes I also had a crush on Robert Conrad too. Rugged good looks.
Dramedy? Obviously the narrator did not watch this show. Probably wasn't even born then. While the show did have some humorous scenes, I would not call it a dramedy.
Where to start? Red West? Larry Mannetti? John Larroquette? The Cannell/Bellasario shows were the best. They couldn't do shows like that now. Where the men were men, and the women were the reason for getting up in the morning. We recently lost Roger Mosely, too.
I was lucky to meet Stephen Cannell twice in Houston when he did a book tour, he gave me an autographed copy of the book and talked to me for about 5 minutes, very kind and gracious man, he is missed
The actress that played General Moore's Daughter that fell in love with Boyington And the actress that fell in love with pappy and then found out her MIA husband Was still alive!
Yes it was but even back than you had people bringing woke BS into it and the name was changed to Black Sheep Squadron, how this name change accomplished anything is beyond me because no matter what the squad was called Black Sheep and the name Black Sheep remained in the title so what did changing the name really accomplish. Nothing. Robert Conrad also in an interview said the reason the show was canceled was due to a group called women against violence on TV. This woke garbage has been around longer than people think.
I considered getting myself a bull terrier and naming it Meatball. However, when a certain brand of beer began advertising using a bull terrier named Spuds MacKenzie I dropped the idea quickly. It just would've made me puke having people call my dog Spuds instead of Meatball.
I didn't know that Black Sheep Squadron ended in April 1978. I remember the Black Sheep Squadron continuing to play on television well into the autumn of 1979.
Robert Conrad was a short man reputedly 5'5" or 5'6". His official height is listed as 5'8" on the Internet. I vaguely recall many years ago his height being listed as 5'5". Maybe three years ago someone on YT claimed they stood next to Robert Conrad. That person said his own height was 5'11" and he towered over Robert Conrad.
Pappy was my favorite but overall I think TJ is my fav. Another character missed is Dana Clare, aka Col. Tye (sp?). On a side note, most of these actors didn’t not leave us too soon, most were in their 80s.
Loved this show...my favorite plane is the Corsair with the b-25 right behind it..I grew up around a ton of WWll planes back in 70's into the 80's with the Confederate Air Force now called commemorative Air Force..my dad was crew member on the B-17 "Chuckie"... I've got a lot of flight time in that as a passenger...I even met "Pappy" in person
They were all favorites. Each had his/her own niche and filled it well. I miss this series. Our cable doent carry the reruns and Utube doesnt seem to allow uploads.
I love hearing details about this show and the cast. But I'm not sure you should bill this as cast members "who died too soon" since most of them lived into their seventies and eighties. Really only Robert McGinty at age 60 and Jeff McKay at age 59 could be considered "gone to soon."
Wrong, the show was cancelled because of a group called women against violence on TV, Robert Conrad in an interview talked about this and said that is why the show was canceled.
I'm writing a fictional book that takes place in the year 3025 about a mercenary unit who's leader is a a 20th century war buff. The "Black Sheep" will live again. Cheers from America.
Robert Conrad was 83 when he passed away, that is hardly passing too soon. The same with Simon Oakland and Dana Elcar both were up there in age whom you did not even have in your video and they were in all the episodes. Robert Ginty and Jeff McKay both died younger due to medal issues. Charles Napier was only in two episodes and 75 is not dying to soon. I quit watching after that one.
Jeff Mckay played only one role on JAG, Master chief Roberts father of Lt. Bud Roberts Jr. And he played 3 different characters on Magnum PI. You need to do better and more accurate research.
Hogan's Heroes, Mission Impossible, Fantasy Island, Babylon 5, Starsky and Hutch, Rod Sterling's Night Gallery, The Sixth Sense, Ghost Story/Circle of Fear, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Quinn Martin's Tales of the Unexpected, Beyond Belief, Unsolved Mysteries, Dragnet, The Invaders, Land of the Giants, V The Series, Police Story, SWAT(1970s), Hee Haw
"He was looking for something more meaningful in his life." So instead he chose to be a professional liar and rake in the big bugs for doing nothing. Is this AI generated?
I don't now I like them all .Hay ho played the Jap pilot that was a ass they call rices ball pappy an him was always after each other an talking on the raideo also call him meat ball
Alright I hit the 600 liked number...😅 I cant believe it only lasted 2 seasons. I was so mad as a kid, as it was my favorite show to watch an looked foward each week to watch it. 😢
my favorites were Lt. Casey and Meatball...least favorite storyline was Boyington vs Harachi, kind of made light of how deadly and vicious Pac War dogfights were. good argument might be what was the best fighter plane in the Pac. War (Corsair, Lightning, Hellcat)..I'll go Hellcat but I loved the Navy's efforts in WW2 Pacific, especially at Coral Sea and Midway.
You might be surprised at the lack of hatred between enemy pilots. Recall how an Me109 pilot escorted a badly crippled B17 safely to the channel: "The Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler incident" And I am friends with 2 sisters in Tx who's father, a B17G pilot, was also escorted back to the channel and safety. For the most part both sides knew they were doing a job. They were professionals. In real life at trials after the war, Greg Boyington testified < FOR > several guards of the prison camp where he was a POW. (From Greg's autobiogrphy)
I actually never heard of this show, which is weird because it was in the '70's. This was sad and interesting. I do remember having a crush on Robert Conrad. 😀 🕊️🙏❤️
This the role Conrad really was looking to sink his teeth into. Although he is know as the James West character, he said after 4 years of that kind of action, it was enough. The vast majority of fans see him as West; he like playing Boyington. Go figure.
