It was nothing like being in a party in the 90's with 500 + people and that Engine Engine number 9 part come on and it feel like you're about to fall through the floor cause everybody jumping.
Most definitely. I remember being overseas in the military, and being at clubs when this joint came on. Man, EVERYBODY dropped low when this part hit, and then that "pick it up" part had the whole floor shaking. Memories.
This is back when I use to write my own raps, it was more creative, now it wouldn't be hard, just mostly use the hook and maybe have two verses , my father use to joke with me and tell me to stop mumbling when I was talking, who knew later it would be a wack rap style, rap today is wack, they need to step back and bring back boom bap and put me on the track , because today these rappers substance is what they lack
The wisdom in that line is amazing. “Out to rock the boat while still here to rock, don’t punch girls and I don’t punch a clock,.....” How to make a difference in the world. At least to do some thing. Shows respect to women which which according to my upbringing is very important and of course I agree. And I don’t punch a clock. They make their own way. Gosh this sounds like people who can think for themselves!! Love it!!
So Epic. I remember being at the dances at my youth center when this was out and everybody getting low at this part then jumping when it was time to Pick it up, Pick it up, Pick it up!

Either this song or “Me Myself and I” or maybe “Scenario” is the all-time #1 Native Tongues anthem. “Buddy” is up there too but I’d say this track is the all time best of that collective.
"Scenario" is one of the greatest Hip-Hop collaborations of all-time. 2nd only to "The Symphony" by Marley Marl. 3rd place goes to "Head Banger" by EPMD.
I just listened to "Scenario" by A Tribe Called Quest before I came to this video. It was originally released just months after this one. You should check that one out, too, if you haven't already.
Sampling McCoy Tyner and quoting Wilson Pickett as well as referencing both A Tribe Called Quest and Jungle Brothers (Both part of the native tongues).. this song is rich on music history and I can't help but love it to death.
Everybody's comparing this unquestionably, exceptionally, awesome old school classic to Today's utterly waste of time music... But it's true. So clean, no cursing, no disrespecting anyone...a true, true classic!!!!
Man, early 90’s NYC was the shit. Everyday there was new music making moves. Hip hop was busting, punk, alternative, shit, metal was coming back , hardcore, grunge, reggae was bouncing. Absolute bananas. I 100% believe that me being 14/15 in 1990 put me in the sweet spot for so much influential music in so many genres. Absolute amazing time for music, clubs, shows and NYC. It’ll never be like that again.
2:25 and on ....I get crazy as fuck. I’m 24 and damn I’m been listening to 90s music since I was kid. My parents had so much fun in the 90s man when they were in their 20s . I’m jealous.
Yo! This has been the back track for every HARD decision in my adult life. Shit got real at 19 facing 20, I won't go there but this jam is THE jam. Come knock me, I don't have nothing on it, so let's play dawg. Midwest is the quest, peace
First time listening to this song fully today. April 25th 2023. I remember an Air Heads commercial from like 2015 that used the same beat. I heard Lola Brooke is releasing a song, sampling this song. So I had to come look for the song. I like her sound, she’s nice 🔥🔥🔥
Still my favorite rap song of all time I still get pumped up as soon as I hear "Engine engine # 9.." just wanna start jumping up and down when the beat drops right after that
Still have their cassette tape from 1992. They are one of my personal legends because they lit a fire in my heart back in high school. Time to go push that extra set now.
First Rakim rhyme I learned in full as a kid. This dropped when I was about 9, and when my stepfather even went out and bought the album...I knew it was something special.
2:24 The build up to the 3rd verse is amazing and the guy who raps who I keep forgetting his name but his flow was... chef's kiss, perfect. He really felt the beat.
Man that Engine, Engine number nine line gets amped to this day! Shout out to the Black Angus in Alhambra in So. Cal who would bump this on the regular! Damn…good times.
