There isn't quite a manual for fly farming so trial and error has been my style. And with that approach has come some memorable stories through the years. In the early days, we did construct one of those big larvae boxes with ramps on either ends for the prepupae to crawl up, it's not exactly a space efficient design to scale up. Luckily, ramps aren't the only solution and on an ordinary night in the middle of winter, my mom discovered that.
This video takes place over about 2 hours time. I pour a bin with a mix of larvae and prepupae -- which is generally a 6 week old bin -- into a brown plastic storage basket, provide a small portion of food and let them sort themselves out, quite literally. Why do I do this? It's all part of the life cycle. I need prepupae to get flies to beget eggs to hatch into larvae to turn into prepupae. Repeat for eternity.
Who knows if this method will scale up with me. For now, it works and I'm not going to mess with it. Thanks for watching!
