I you only knew what a joy it is to be able to watch such wonderful dancers on RU-vid, in the middle of the night, even. When I was younger, I was fortunate to see Baryshnikov and before that Nureyev. We don't get as many of the great European Ballets down here in Australia, although we have given the world some brilliant dancers of our own 😀❤
I like that you found the individual characteristics that each brought to playing/dancing this part. What a kind, positive comment. So rare on the internet.
Every audience has their own preferences, but this cannot change the charm of the three masters of ballet, their artistic achievements have reached the point of perfection.
W Deng : perfection no : Zakha is too big for a true teenager as the young Giselle also Aurora ; her excessives extensions more than 180 are not esthetic ( also Sylvie Guillem ) : all RU-vidrs millions and millions write the same thing it's tiresome. .
Zahkarova- “I’m way prettier and more elegant than boring Odette.” Osipova- “I stomped on Odette on the way over here and you all better not argue.” Nunez- “There is no Odette. I’m more sinister than you can handle. I MIGHT let you admire me.”
I, in my opinion, prefer Osipova most of the ballets, but in the Swan Lake, especially Black Swan, Zakharova took another place. She made it her own. Not only her technique but also her attitude and gestures are enough to say that ''I am a black swan.'' I cannot stay without saying , Nunez has so much control (especially turns) and acting talent. She is so calm and stable always. They are all amazing, at their own individual way.
I usually yawn while watching Zakharova as I personally think her dancing is reminiscent of a hypermobile' "perfectly technically programmed" robot. But her black swan is truly something else, extremely intriguing to watch her in this role.
@@hejhej4441 not agreed at all, I don't think she is robot because I think no ballerina should be called like that. I prefer to say her technicality is quite strict :) She is an amazing ballerina probably one of the best of our era. Her extentions and technic is unique... All ballerinas are different and beautiful. Btw you are right, she is at her top in this role.
@@beatrixkiddo1279 I know that she is famous for a reason and I know why many people don't agree with me. This was just my personal blunt opinion. Of course, dancers should strive to have as perfect technique they can but personally I care very little for "perfection" in that aspect as long as it looks good and fits the role. I like to think of ballet as an athletically demanding artform first and a sport second. I personally find it quite tiresome to see how this generation of dancers dancers are taught to strive after being able to get their foot to their ear (even if it isn't on time with the music) and to have their legs shaped like an "s" because they strive towards those hyperextensions and banana feet. I'd much rather see a dancers who sacrifice a little technique for artistry, acting and expression both through their face and body, that is what I think makes a prima ballerina stand out from the others. But I understand why technical perfectionism appealing to some, to each their own.
@@hejhej4441 I put my signature under every sentence you say. I also think like you. None of my favorite dancers throughout history have had huge extentions. Asslymuratova, Nureyev, Makarova, Plisetskaya ... (except Sylvie Guillem). For example: Assylmuratova's Nikiya's Death. None has ever been able to present it as well as Altnai. No extention as big as today's ballerinas, but the lines are very clear. Emotions are unique. Extention also comes from just there.. She is the only one. The ability to give the sense of art to the other party is only heartfelt, not the leg extention. Also, just because someone has a large extention does not mean they cannot give emotion. For example Sylvie Guillem. Art perception is based on where a person looks at it. Two issues are a bit tricky. You seem to be diverting the subject a little. :)
@@beatrixkiddo1279 I agree with you. I am also a fan of some ballerinas with high extensions that are very capable of translating their technique into artistry to fit their character, like Sylvie Guillem, so they can definitely coexist. I think that the reason as to why I don't enjoy Zakharova in most roles is because I personally don't feel her, even though I'm being blunt and expressing my personal thoughts. Where I come from we also tend to be very blunt with how we feel about something/someone even if it sounds rude (things like cursewords and insults are also taken way lore lightly than in other cultures, it's even fine for teachers to use them as long as their students have passed a certain age) not that it is an excuse. But just so that you understand that my sole intent isn't to undermine anyone as a dancer, but just to express myself in a way that people around me have expressed themselves since childhood) that pass through my head when watching her, I am not saying that she is an objectively bad dancer. We all have our subjective opinions and this is just mine. But overall I agree with you and I'm glad that you understand where I'm coming from. And yeah, I am diverting the subject haha. I guess this discussion wasn't what you signed up for when you wrote your original comment. But it was still interesting to hear what you had to say (or write).
Zakharova has grace and beautiful lines (that attitude is perfection), Osipova has the acting ability and technical power while Nunez has a fair combination of both. These three women are incredible.
Not to compare, because all three of them are incredible performers, artists and athletes - but watching Natalia Osipova dance the black swan literally feels like being bewitched. She's casting a spell as she dances. Absolutely out of this world
First off, it's absurd to compare dancers who are performing different variations. My preference for Osipova is because she's dancing a specific character, Odile, not just doing pretty ballet moves. Odile is about seduction, making a fool of the prince and court, not just entertaining them, and I think Osipova puts that over the best. When Osipova imitates Odette, it's almost as if she's doing it with a mocking smirk on her face and I love that interpretation. Whatever Odile is (Plisetskaya referred to her as an 'imp') she's evil and manipulative not just someone in a black tutu.
I agree with you. In that aspect Osipova is amazing, she's my all time favourite dancer. But in this role I prefer Evgenia Obraztsova since she has the most unique and multi-dimensional (if that's the right word) interpretation of Odile. I don't enjoy her Odette a lot, but I like how she plays Odile as this character who isn't just pure evil, but evil at the commands of her father whom she is still dependent on. Her acting is astounding in that role and the way she uses the music for dramatic expression also just that.
@@hejhej4441 Well, Evgenia Obraztsova who's, of course, a wonderful dancer, is performing in the Bourmeister version of Swan Lake... very different ballet with different music (for this act), totally different choreography and a different vibe. I like that version but it's completely different from what Osipova is dancing. Who says Odile is Rothbart's daughter? She's this supernatural creature he's brought to the palace and, yes, I think she's totally evil, there to humiliate the prince and his parents. There is no nice aspect of her. I do like how Obraztsova is almost at times like a dancing doll, but I kind of think she loses it in the middle of the PDD and, for me, Osipova gives a much more focused performance. Different strokes for...
@@kabardinka1 I’m aware that she’s dancing a very different version. I was just speaking of the role of Odile in general and not this variation specifically. I’m not saying that Odile is Rothbarts daughter, I’m just saying that it is the vibe that Evgenia is giving me (a daddy’s girl who’s been told to be evil and seductive help her summoner and his evil plans) and commend her on such a unique interpretation. Wheter you want Odile to be multi-dimensional or pure evil is simply a matter of preferences. That is why different interpretations and different dancers exist and I still think Osipova is wonderful in this role.
Osipova is such a great actress interpretater. She personifies the haughtiness and disdain of the character, that these mortals are daring to behold her beauty.
Osipova pulled me in with her passion and the quality of her movements! She extends everything full out and finishes every move with a passionate extension. She has so much respect in every single movement and such a flow I could feel her character as it built up in the iconic choreo!!! What an absolute goddess 🩰💃🏻💞💞💞💞💞👑👑👑👑
Her swift head movements and tge way she felt the music. Osipova' s turns are amazing as always. With all my respect to zaharova, I don't find her captivating and fluid.
Nunez makes me yawn. Svetlana actually looks like a prima ballerina Assoluta! Her lines, extensions, legs, Divine arms and hands I mean she is like an angel and fairy wrapped up in one and perfectly personifies the black and the white swan. Comparison, Nunez looks like a clumsy linebacker. She has good technique, but it's not astonishing is the problem
While I normally love Marienela there were a few instances where I felt she just didn't complete a move. Like she was on to the next thing before complete extension. I'm probably not expressing that very well.
Svetlana IS Odile! As someone who has grown up watching every interpretation of Swan Lake since the age of 3; when I saw Svetlana dance the Black Swan for the first time, my heart futtered almost as rhythmically as Svetlana's arms did... I had found my forever Odile ❤
Nunez is kind of hyper, uneasy! There are moments she looks like “fast forwarded” on the video! I have noticed same thing with Gillian Murphy! They dance like they are on cocaine or sort of! The other two are so smooth and fluid! But my vote goes to Osipova!
Each dancer displays her unique talents beautifully. Svetlana uses her lovely hands and arms to manipulate the Prince. Her technique is also amazing. Osipova uses her power to convey a strong black swan, while Nela displays great attention to detail and wonderful musicality. Each has her own gifts to give an adoring audience. Great video and much thanks, C 💝💝💝
Osipova is, as always, incomparable. Her routines are always more complex because she easily does complex and l think she is the most graceful dancer of all
I preferred her too ... and like you I don't understand anything but I like ballet. Nuñez has a fluidity that hit me a lot ... mesmerizing and powerfull!!!
I can't tell which one was "better" for me.. but I did love the detail if Zakharova's hands - it's these small things that can really make a choreography
Wonderful artists. Zakharova was the most beautiful; Osipova the best actress and wonderfully in control; Nunez had, for me, the most interesting variation.
As only an observer, I can't state enough the importance of those movements of the hands, arms and head that Svetlana pulls off. Those little touches transform everything to a magical level. All great performances, but those little details take my breath away.
Wow! Thank you for sharing this fantastic video. You’ve chosen 3 amazing dancers to compare. For me, Zakharova embodies Odile the best with Osipova in a close second place. Yet, I find Nunez’s dancing to be so satisfying to watch- her musicality and smooth control. They’re all gorgeous!
Svetlana Zakharova is my favourite because she seems more elegant, more graceful, lighter too. But they all dance well and since the music is not the same, it's not fair to compare...
we used to call that 'licking the floor' in ballet class..... It is why she is so unique. She almost seems like she is going to be late on some of the music but she pulls her speed and her movements out to match the music. She is the most musical of the three.
For me, the best of these three dancers is Osipova. Grace in dancing, delicacy of body structure and the ability to display it. The flirtatiousness of the swan, but also its strength and dignity, are perfectly played by her.
To me she seems a bit like she has no strength. Idk if you are a professional ballet dancer but her technique is good but not on osipovas or nunezs level. And that she operated her feet makes it seem fake and that is not REAL beauty to me. Just saying
I know all people have their own taste of arts and there’s no right or wrong, but it’s just what I want to say. I think Zakharova did have her own way to express her feeling, not exactly flat or something. But she’s just relatively shy?(or IDK) Anyway I can feel that. I always love her performance🙃🙂
@@NEnigma777completely agree with you. I have no idea how people can even compare Nunez to Svetlana or even Osipova. Svetlana is the black and the white swan she looks like a magical fairy Angel ballerina. Simply Divine The Best of the Best of the best
The first one reminded me of the film Black Swan: both the music and the dancing and acting. Zahkarova had the best "wings". I loved the little shake of the head at 0:15 and the possessed expression at 0:18.
How can you pick a favorite! It’s like trying to pick out one dessert from the bakery! All the of their performances were stunning. There’s certain choreography that I liked better between them, but each of those dancers could have executed the same choreography.
l like Svetlana. l love how she flicks her wrists to make her hands go left. l like the music, too. The only thing l noticed was that her shoes made some noise. l dont _at all_ like the grey too too. lt should be jet black. Osipova is technically AMAZING ...as usual.
For me the best especially as a vulnerable Odette is Svetlana Zhakarova. Great! as Odile here too! Her fluidity, her legendary arms and hands (Baryshnikov picked her out for them), artistry, lightness, etc. Her extensions too. The others are great as well but have more of athletic muscles, bodies, Svetlana has the ideal ballerina body/subtle muscles.
I think Marianela Nunez is my favorite. Her movements are graceful and elegant, and with the music. Her feet feel like she does not even touch the floor. She is my favorite, followed by Zakharova. Great video.
I used to dance and here’s all that’s going on, the technique is immensely difficult, it takes years and countless days and hours to get to that level of difficulty, (if you can even make it that far), then you got to add in the mental stress. Physical aches and pains, injuries etc. emotions, then you have to act and be precisely with the music. Musicality and also acting. Dieting exercising and cross training, While a thousand people watch you and bright lights in your face. Hours upon hours of practice and rehearsals. The pressure from your teachers and peers. While wearing an incredibly elaborate costume. And THEN after all that and so much more. You smile and look pretty and it looks effortless. Ohhh the beautiful ways is ballet. Taking the most incredibly difficult thing your mind and body can do and making it look like a slice of cake. Bravo!
Osipova 😍😍😍 She is not just dancing or doing ballet figures she is being swan or kitri or giselle she becomes them, just like method acting. She is so special. She is not just jumping she is flying so Osipova is THE ONE
Lovely compilation video of great dancing! Nunez has a hint of the great Pavlova! But my favourite is Natalia Osipova, who is the epitome of a Star Ballerina. A superb dancer, with immense charisma, incredible technique and thrilling to watch!!
Having watched Osipova in several ballets; I find her interpretation is mostly the same; she also has a fast virtuousity; which is not the same thing as interpreting and emoting different characters, and drawing the audience into the story. Svetlana and are both Nela are great actors, and very compelling.
in my opinion: Zakharova - the discipline Osipova - the personality Nunez - the strength Nunez is so calm, light and powerful, is soothing watching her dance. To me her performance is one of the most beautiful ones of this variation, one of my favorites honestly. Osipova always captures my attention in this variation. She's so majestic and mysterious, like a fairy that dances around the stage. Love the personality she brings in, it's refreshing. Zakharova takes the crown on this one for me. Honestly, I never thought I would be even thinking this cause Zakharova can often bore me. She's so technical and so perfect, real discipline. But in this variation she's the ideal fit for the role in my opinion. Her long legs and arms are so sharp and elegant, it remins me of the shape and attitude of an actual swan. Plus her gestures and face expressions just completes it, she embodies it fully and with so much confidence. All time favorite in this variation. ❤️
