I dig what you're saying, but remember, Rakim was already out and influencing, along with the Moe Dee's, LL's, Melle Me'sl, Caz's, etc. G Rap raised the bar. He took lyricism to another level. He was the first spit-fire MC with complex rhymes. Rakim stepped up his game after G Rap came out. After 1989, new artists had to be dope to make the cut.

Schooly D was one of the original street crime lyricist and G Rap soon followed. Contrary to popular belief, we were calling them gangster rappers looong before the white media co-opted the phrase to use it to defame the art and put advisory stickers on it to stop niggas money. So there’s NOTHING wrong with calling G Rap a “Gangster Rapper” based on his subject matter spanning 30 years I doubt he’d be as offended as you are at the moniker. Peace

No disrespect to Mc REN but I don’t think he belongs any where near G Rap in the goon Rap/ Gangster Rap category. Matter of fact as nice as Ren was, he wasn’t better than Ice Cube. Road to Riches is an all time classic, it's story telling and show's the negative aspects of drug dealing and the criminal life. It's not just straight up gangsta rap, it ends up like a cautionary tale. The beat and production is also heavy AF. Ice Cube's 'Summer Vacation' actually does a similar thing in a more West Coast style, but that came a couple of years later.

Pablo Martinez Both G Rap and Black Thought are better LYRICISTS...not overall but lyricists yes. Listen to Fast Life by G Rap and Nas. G Rap had the better verse on that track. Nas is super nice but I give the edge to Black Thought and G Rap

I often ponder why there are dislikes... like why, how!? this is this mans opinion & a beautiful opinion at that with passion involved... I loved it cuz now I can not unsee how black thought has adopted that style of rap... moral of the story A legend giving another LEGEND props does not deserve a dislike... HIP HOP

😅Aww Man I'm laughing with Joy man this Shit made My Day.Black Thought! One of Our Hip-Hop Cultures Prime MC's.His excitement as He relives His Younger Day's listening to The legendary Kool G Rap's Lyrics to one of The Classic Jams back in The late 80's.Is priceless! I say that because I lived The same exact life experiences in Bmore. And to think that Black Thought.Whom was Destin to be Who He is.And just off of This Hip-Hop Classic alone for Starters is a Golden Moment for sure.
