Way too much banter! Scrubbing each shell is crazy. Remove green or yellow husks by placing them on the ground, and stepping on them and sliding your foot. Wear gloves and place the husked nuts into a mesh bag, perhaps a onion sack.tie the bags shut. Tie a long piece of rope to the bag. Take the bags of nuts to a stream or creek. place the bags in running water. Every once and a whie pick up the bag, circulate the nuts. This procedure is niw usec by me. Previously I placed nuts in a 5 gal pail, and ran the garden hose at low pressure till the rinse water in the pail cleared.

Ditch the wire brush and use a pressure washer .

Dear sir I did the same thing you are doing, then I though there has to be a quicker way. Then along comes this guy steps on them and in no time did hundreds. No washing the sun dries the goo part and as they dry it falls off and you have clean nuts. No washing

I fly with a medium hard rubber hammer. It goes super quick

So we use a pair of pliers and a hamer and a very strong brick! ( NOT YOUR KITCHEN COUNTER! YOU WILL DESTROY IT! TO SAY THE LEAST! 😉💝

Yes, these shells will absolutely destroy any surface... I have done the same thing! I use a brick as well!

I think the tree produce walnuts every other year. This is my first time n i only did 15 so far, i used a pairing knife. & new tooth prush.

Yes, I have noticed most trees do produce bigger yields every other year, I have had to upgrade to a large garbage can with a drill powered paint mixer to remove the hulls more efficiently.

In the eastern US these are great, when you get west were the grasslands start they still grow. However because of our lack of rainfall the nut meats are much smaller and the flavor more bitter. If you have a yard plant one and water it. The more you water it the better the nuts. I have one in back in lawn where I can water it on days you are allowed to water. One by street, sprinkers are not allowed, lots of people grow rocks. You can use water bags around trunk or sit and hold a hose. I try to water street once every 3 weeks. The ones in grass that i can water once a week are so much better,

My sons and I are in the process of cleaning our walnuts today. They are 14 and 11, and so excited to take part in this process. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the info! I’m just starting out myself-we moves to the country, found two walnut trees on our property when we saw the nuts on the ground. My Grandfather had a walnut cracker, passed it on to my Uncle. He’s going to let me use it..very excited to learn how to do this.

After the initial cracking in your vice, use a pair of electricians' side cutters to cut away the shells to release and extract the meat. You'll find it much easier than trying to pick out the meats. Happy cracking.....I have 7822 currently seasoning from this year's harvest. I need to get crackin'. :)

I've had walnuts float after I take them out of the husk, but then after I clean them up a little more, they don't float anymore. I'm not sure what I should do. I went ahead and saved them but they're all mixed in with the ones that never floated
@Josh-lj7py
@Josh-lj7py Год назад
They will float with some extra husk stuck to them, if they sink once fully cleaned, they are good to go! You won't have a problem if some bad ones are mixed in, when you crack them open, it is very easy to see which ones are not good, so just toss any that haven't fully developed, they will not harm the others around them. I find some darker shriveled up nuts actually have a stronger great taste, just don't eat any that got compromised from any insects.

Thanks for posting - I just harvested two laundry baskets plus three large buckets from ONE tree in my yard - and I see there are more nuts waiting to fall! I'm going to start opening and cleaning this afternoon (after I go buy some heavy rubber gloves!).

Question: My Brother has one in his yard and we are thinking about trying to harvest them. The ones that have the husk on them some are not green and have turned black are the black ones still good to harvest?
@Josh-lj7py
@Josh-lj7py 2 года назад
Supposedly when they get fully black and mushy I'm told they become more bitter because of the tannins from the hull, but I've seen plenty of people still harvest them, and I just recently did myself as well. I would say go for it, better to do it now and learn, I still see some green ones on trees I'm hoping to still get my hands on. Once you harvest and cure them, they become too delicious to not want to harvest as many as possible. 😁

Actually, I just cracked open one of my darkest ones after being completely black, I had let a bag of them sit for longer than I meant to, and not only was it not bitter, it was one of the best tasting ones I've had so far! The nut meat was a little darker than my normal ones, but the taste was excellent, and these are my favorite ones it seems! I would say the only thing to watch out for would be trees that are in an area that might be treated with chemicals, pesticides, that sort of thing. Other than that, go nuts!!!

That is why they aren't sold commercially... that shell is super tough. You will need either a very good walnut cracker or a vice or a good hammer... just be careful! With my vice, I was able to get entire nuts out in one piece if you crack them correctly!

What do you do with them
@Josh-lj7py
@Josh-lj7py Год назад
Eat them, of course! I find different flavors from different trees, not only are they absolutely delicious, they are so good for you! Gotta try black walnut cookies... everyone loves them! Just beware of anyone with nut allergies! You need a good hammer or vice or strong walnut cracker, the shell is very strong. Or, if you're lonely like me, you can make all the squirrel friends in the world... I feed them by hand until one chewed through my screen to try and get to my stash... 😆

When I open mine up after drying 1-4 weeks they’re always black, dried up and paper thin. What am I doing wrong? 😢
@Josh-lj7py
@Josh-lj7py Год назад
I would say try harvesting from different trees, the best ones get plenty of water, I have found some trees that do not produce walnuts well, so you are doing nothing wrong! It is amazing the taste and size difference from tree to tree, just look for some better ones!
