A young black wolf in winter. It chases a coyote thru the sagebrush, then comes across a lone mule deer. The wolf stalks the deer but has neither the strength or confidence to take this mule deer buck that has shed his antlers. The buck faces down the wolf for at least 30 hours and the wolf finally gives up and leaves in search of easier prey.
What was once of of the rarest wildlife sightings in Jackson Hole is now seen regularly along the highway just outside town, predators hunting in broad daylight.
This occurred just a few hundred yards from the National Museum of Wildlife Art!
While predators scare many people in the valley, dangerous encounters are rare.
It is a great triumph of the Endangered Species Act that grizzlies and wolves have returned to Jackson Hole, and are expanding into places where they have not been seen for generations.
Management of predators should be based on science, not politics, not fear, public hysteria or convenience.
