Levon was the man, an Charlies' killing it, but those slides are tearin it up as well. Just what would happen if Rossington, and Derrick stepped on the stage with these guys! It would be biblical!
Me too Thomas, great, great grandson of a good man, who fought for the confederacy, and I am not ashamed to say so. I love this version of a great song by The Band, great job Blackberry Smoke.
Amazing band live. I've only seen them twice, but both times were fantastic. Energy in the crowd and from the band was great, everyone acted like it was a big family reunion.
people who have never heard of them see them for the first time, and become instantly addicted. I can tell you how many concerts I've been to where I've met people who have never heard of them, and were screaming and yelling oh my God who is this band!
Everybody except Charlie forgot there was one more verse. But of course Charlie handled it perfectly, as the seasoned pro he is, with little more than a coy smile back to Brother Brit. These guys are such a treat to watch. I'd see every live show if I could.
Arguably, this is about the closest a voice can get to Levon Helm's version of this song. The raspy voice and inflections in the way he sings the song are very close to how Levon would have sung this. Great cover. One of the best of The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down. I would also recommend Dobie Gray's version as well. It's got a lot more of a "soul" feel to it but it is incredible. It's here on youtube. Type in Dobie Gray sings "The Night We Drove Old Dixie Down" and you'll get to it. It is definitely worth a listen.
Joe Van Seeters Nice they do Levon's music. I love Dirt Farmer too. It is TRUE Levon--Ozark Mountain Music. I have been hearing alot about Blackberry Smoke. Arkansas and Branson LOVES thier music!!!
Yes Levon had one of the most soulful, feeling, honest voices ever. Wish I could have seen him in person but Charlie and the boys do a pretty good job!
I was there too with the wife and some friends. Drove down from Raleigh it was our 22nd time we seen Blackberry Smoke. An interesting note that the gold les paul guitar was Duane Allman's . It is taken out of the museum every year and played. Charlie talked about the guitar earlier in the show when he was playing it. A couple of songs after Charlie played it Paul played it. The guitar made it around to all the guitar players that night.
Hey, I was there that night too! There was a bunch of magic in the air that night, this should prove it! Not many bands can perform this good and put on a show of this caliber! Enjoy all future events, I will!
Stuck here in the Uk - get to see this wonderful band once or twice a year. Thank you Eric for your consistently great uploads. One of the very greatest songs ever done true justice here. Have to say there was a big lump in the throat listening to this. No one puts the soul and love into rock music like musicians from the South - a lifetime of listening to music has me concluding this again and again. And as for BBS - i didn't think we would see the likes of the great Southern bands again , but glory be , here they are.
+Geoff Rees Heck of a comment Geoff, esp. from the UK which has put out so much of that magical msical era now know as "classic Rock" (I hate that term- but, o well) We can only hope those days come on back around. Good things have a history of repeating themselves. doin my part in a band called 5Rounds Band. Have a great day, Cheers!
+Geoff Rees Lovely sentiment and I feel the same way. GOD BLESS DIXIE FOREVER! We're havin' to FIGHT for Her, once again. Crazy world we're livin' in - Thank God I live in The South. Deo Vindice!
Geoff its been two years since your comment but you nailed it I had a lump too I can't belive how talented this band is absofuckenlutley amazing Just lost Tom and I find these guys long live southern rock!!!
With Levon, sadly, gone, and Joan Baez not really singing anymore, let's forget about the arguments who sings it best, and be happy that there are still people who do this great tune justice! Thanks, Charlie!
Iam a fan of blackberry smoke .. and i really like this live .. and i took time to read about lyrics and meanings behind .. its awsome .. this is real art . Big love from north africa 🤘
Everyone I've heard Blackberry Smoke cover has been phenomenal performances every time without fail. The Band, Skynyrd, ABB, Marshall Tucker, Mountain, you name it. These guys have done big time justice to everyone's music they've performed, IMO! Love them, and hope to get to see them live someday soon!
What the hell you mean? All those were southern rock bands. The Band who wrote the song were from Canada. Although he had to have loved the south to have written such a sad song. My granny told me stories about the war she heard from her uncles, she said they were hungry, cold and their clothing was falling apart. Another story was a uncle and his 7 brothers fought for the south, only he returned. He made it his goal in life to kill as many Yankees as he possibly could. It’s said he killed a hundred. My roots are deep in the south and I shall fly that flag it if I so wish, not out of hate but love for all who died, that are buried deep in this girls roots.
EclecticHillbilly I knew they were from Canada. I did not know Levon Helms was from Arkansas. I shall check that fact out, Sir. Thanks. I also think Charlie Starr sings it better then any other vocalist I’ve yet to hear.
Levon is my birthfather. Nobody believes me. But originally all I wanted to do was learn what kind of man he was. Besides being a great musician, he was a man with a huge heart.
Ma'am if you say Levon Helm is your birthfather I believe you 100% because "God Fearing Women" do not take things of that nature lightly. I had a "girlfriend" named A. Meyers during the mid-1990s. She was a beautifuly "young lady" who was "10 years my junior" ... I assisted her in trying to "find her birth father" but since her mom was a "flower child" I do not think she was successfull. At the time she was a legal secretary for a a Law Firm in Atlanta named "Donald Weisman and Associates" or something like that. The law firm she worked for specialized in "Domestic Relations Law". God Bless you Beth Whiting ... 7/1/2020
Bo Jackson they are awesome live man. Just went and seen them best part was they went on before the main event and soon as they ended the set 60% left the building. Was clear everybody came tp party with the smoke
Just found these guys but they seem so laid back that it would be impossible not to enjoy yourself while watching them play. And I haven't heard a bad song yet...some of the covers they do you almost think it's the original band...they are fantastic!
I had a good friend at the University of Arkansas Law School named Robert "Bobbie" Coleman from Forest City, Arkansas and I understand since his graduation he has now become "THE BIG DAWG" and I know that man ABSOLUTELY LOVED the song "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", especially when it was sung by LEVON HELM at the ARKANSAS STATE FAIR during the time period 1977 until "our final parting" when we graduated from LAW SCHOOL in May, 1980 along with the following persons, to wit: (1) Hugh Rodham, Brother of Former First Lady Hilary Rodham Clinton, and (2) Rodney Slater, a prominent African American Human Being, who later became SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION under President William Jefferson Clinton. Of course, these individuals tended to LEAN DEMOCRAT ... Time does not permit me to address which members of my GRADUATING CLASS may or may not have "LEANED REPUBLICAN". However, MUSIC IS THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF LOVE ... and we do not have to "get political about everything" .... 7/1/2020 SRC
What a Beautiful Real stuff...Real from the Heart Music, I mean...after that.. Ya know I just reallly like that cause it helps my soul troubles. All the best Blackberry Smoke, plase keep doing music forever...... ;)
Derek never played with Duane but he carries his mantel well. He's got the same touch with the slide on an SG. But that aside, Blackberry Smoke is one of the best bands out today. Southern rock is alive and well.
I think I commented on this before but Greg Martin was killin on the guitar that night as well as Charlie on Allman's gold top for a bit. I went to a lot of Blackberry Smokes shows here in Ga but them and the Kentucky Headhunters playing was one hell of a good time
As an Australian and a lover of southern music ( country, rock, blues and more ) I can’t help but feel an unusual rush of pride run through me when watching any of the good old southern tunes. Since Trump took office in 2016 I have had a whole new outlook on America and when it was stolen from him My heart automatically took me straight down to the South where the good music and good people with a strong love for there beloved country and a President who will give them back their country, it doesn’t get much better then that.
I like the change from P-90's on the SG to humbuckers on the LP. It gives a direct sound comparison which I have wondered what the difference would sound like for a long time.
By the way these guys (Blackberry Smoke) do covers of some really tasteful stuff. It almost feels like listening to all my old vinyl from the seventies.
Amazing. These guys are so good they make it look easy. I love how Charlie tends to play Esquires and Juniors. Those will make you a much better player!
