BlackFly Electric VTOL Airplane
The BlackFly electric VTOL airplane is a unique aircraft that uses 8 electric motors and two fixed wings to achieve vertical takeoff and landing performance.
The BlackFly is unique in that neither the wings nor motors tilt to achieve vertical flight performance. Rather the engines are mounted 45 degrees up and the airplane tilts aft to takeoff and forward for level flight.
The BlackFly is a personal use aircraft that is build and flown under FAA Part 103 rules. Part 103 has limitations for the aircraft in terms of weight and performance, to include just a single pilot, but is perfect for developing this new technology.
The BlackFly first flew in 2011 and was introduced to the public in 2018. The BlackFly has performed 100s of test flights, with a typical length being 30 miles. Opener is the company that will produce the BlackFly aircraft.
The BlackFly is still in development with initial production aircraft being supplied to early access customers to continue to mature the design. There is no set date (as of late 2023) for when the aircraft will be for sale or the cost.

Very interesting iteration of a vertical to horizontal flight machine. I've followed VTOL history a long time ; making a viable and simple version seemed quite elusive. I recall seeing this last year on the EAA website for Airventure. It's quite innovative to be sure. I look forward to how this project develops!

Once the batteries are sorted Tim we'll see this sort of craft flying all over the World, of that I am sure 🤔👍

I wonder if those little wings can give you some rudimentary control if you need to glide back to the surface. I thought I saw some surfaces flapping in the video.

My guess would be not; the plane seems to be way below any sort of stall speed while coming in for landing. Tim

Wow you know your stuff If it is possible what is a transmitter (preferably one that works with lots of receivers) would u recamend

Stephen: I like wwwSpektrumRC.com equipment a lot. They have a range of transmitters, and I use their AR620 receivers in most of my models. Easy to bind and an internal antenna. See my video on the DX6 transmitter. Tim

It has a terrible name. It has to feel odd when taking off and landing. It goes from about 45 degrees nose up when hovering to about 45 degrees nose down in fast forward flight, and your body rotates with it.

A now famous WW2 airplane is named mosquito and mosquitos are only a little less annoying than blackflys. Much more dangerous to humans though.

@r_friend_In northeast Texas, we refer to black flies as buffalo gnats. Their bite is much worse than a mosquito and hardly anything will repel them. I've tried Deet and Picaridin. They're attracted to your breath and bite you on the face. They'll be here soon.
