Thank you so much for the awesome words of support. Glad you liked it. I’m working on another video now actually for the S1H... with some comparison to the BM6K. So stay tuned ;)
@@THEDPJOURNEY hope you have something "more" in regards to BMPCC4K in plans as well, would love to get even more info since I'm already having my piggy bank smashed from left to right just to finish the rig setup, ha. Neverless already subscribed and "notified" - hope to see more soon!
@@Gr3kiZon3 In fact yes, I shot a music video with the BM4K and was planning to tackle that in an upcoming episode... So stay tuned ;) Thanks for the sub
Thanks for your thorough and thoughtful reviews. For me, the BMPCC 6K made sense, as a dive in point. I didn't purchased the 4K version, and I've been shooting with an older Canon C300 Mark 1. The price point for upgrading to the Mark 2 of the C300 was a little too far out of reach for me. I personally am excited about the EF mount. I know it isn't cutting edge, but I have the Canon 5D Mark IV as a stills and B camera with several L series Canon lenses. So this made it a no-brainer for me to say YES to the 6K. I've been behind the curve of working with 4K footage for too long, and this just made it accessible to me. I'm excited to explore these new found capabilities, and to start working with Davinci Resolve, because I'm ready to free myself from the grips of Adobe Premiere!
Then the 6K seems like the perfect camera for you. I already have the 4K, which is why I would think twice before getting the 6K. Thanks again for your comment and support.
Thank you for this, i've been mulling on the 4k or 6k and i love the versatility of the 4k along with processing 6k of footage is just going to be a monster.
Thank you for this in-depth review/breakdown!! You've helped me close my decision on which to get. I'll be going with the BMPCC 4K and spend the extra on Metabones for the wider FOV
I will remember this day when I was here in this channel before 1000 subscribers ! because (mark my words) this channel will grow very very fast ! waiting your next uploads !
Those are the most encouraging words I'm read so far... thanks a million for your awesome support. Been planning to launch this channel for a while now, so I'm surely glad to find great people like you pushing me and the channel forward. Thanks again for your kind words
Hey Sherif, Is it too much I'm asking from you??? I need help from you, you really got me into buying this camera for serious. Right now I'm using 700D for my channel from past 3 years and I was waiting for some great camera to come. I guess I found one now, thanks to you and many other guys who made videos on this camera. But, and its a big but, I cannot possibly shoot 4k, let alone 6k as of now, bcz it will require me to upgrade everything, like storage, cpu, gpu, etc. I calculated the data rates of BMPCC6k and I realized I can only shoot 1080p Prores 422 LT (16:9). You must be thinking, why the hell I wanna buy this camera if i cant even use it at max capacity? Well, i will upgrade everything, but slowly & steadly... The IMAGE from this camera makes me ready to compromise all the pros & ergonomics of cameras like EOS-R, A7iii etc... When I make videos with 700D, my viewers can barely make out the text on my android tutorial videos, my 3rd last video is proof of what I'm saying. And please it would be very very helpful if you can clear this doubt of mine by uploading a 1080p prores LT version to some cloud service, especially with a phone screen in it. So I can play with the original footage & be sure if it's a great buy for me or not... I know its too much ask, but if you can pull this off, (maybe make a video for your viewers too, like 1080 prores 422 LT vs 4k RAW vs 6k RAW, etc) I will be really thankful to you!
hey Buddy.... yes for sure would love to help! I'll try to test that for you within the next couple of days and send you the link to the footage ;) Thanks again for the awesome support! Cheers. Even though the 6K is no longer in my hands. I literally returned it today. But I'm sure 4K would be perfect still. Besides I noticed that you take a screen capture of your phones, which is a brilliant idea to solve this without the need for any cameras ;)
@@THEDPJOURNEY Oh man, Thanks a lot for helping, I'll be waiting. Yes, I did the screen capture for the first time in my last video, bcz my viewers were getting frustrated for low visibility of text on the phone...

Too many videos obsessing over specs and crop and bla bla instead of recognizing that these cameras are amazing filmmaking tools. Crop? Don’t underestimate the power of moving the camera back for the desired composition. I wish I had a fraction of the gear people have access to today when I was a young filmmaker shooting analog in the 90s.
First, this is a masterclass video. truly, well done. But I wanted to say that I think black magic made the right call going with the EF lens mount instead of the RF. While it would have been bold to jump with both feet into the RF series, that's not a very well-established line up. in contrast, the EF mount has been around since 1987 and has literally thousands of lenses to choose from. How many lenses exist for the RF mount right now? 30? 40 if you include all that have been announced to be released in 2020. If Black Magic went with the RF mount, they would be telling almost all of their users to also collect a new set of lenses, and at a premium, too, because there aren't any old generation or used lenses for the RF line. I am quite thankful they went with the EF mount. Buying this camera with an RF mount would have been a hard no for me.
Thanks for the comment buddy. About the RF Vs EF... You know there's a whole section where I talked about why RF is better, it'll all be about buying an adapter, which is very reasonable considering what it can add tot he camera (like Built in ND filter)... Let's see what they'll do NAB 2020. Thaskagain
who really cares that much about a super technical nitpick like crop factor when image quality and latitude is everything that narrative filmmakers care about. story and composition is everything not full frame or super 35. The camera with the most academy awards (Alexa Mini) wins was made in 2011 and is super 35. a changeable lens mount would be a better option for me as I would love to use PL lens natively.
Agreed, happy holidays to you too! Your content is well crafted, looking forward to more. Thanks for provided great info I just feel people get inundated with keeping up with the latest tech and consumerism.
The 6K just dropped in price to $1995.00. So, that makes it about the same price as the 4K plus a speedbooster. I went with the 6K when I saw the price break.
Thanks Oren, yeah last video I was bombarded with all sorts of different crop factors from everyone claiming i got it wrong, and each thought his/hers were the right ones... The funny thing is that, we're all right... Just different methods for different purposes ;) Inspired me to create an episode just for that to clarify it once and for all. Thanks again
Hey man, loved your comparison... Can you please let us play with the original files of both the cameras?? Can you please upload them to the cloud & share with us?
Dude! I appreciate the time editing you put into this video. Very informative both visuals and words. I'm glad I didn't buy the 6K because the crop factor that kinda throw me off the chain. It's very struggle to shoot if you want to do a film indoor.
Wow. Thank you for the very candid video. It's refreshing when someone has some real reasons why a system will or won't work for them and separating hype from reality. Simply, the 4k is a fantastic camera and you can get a 2nd for the price of the 6k or get many other items like a good cine lens or two or gimbal(s). I mean, how many clients are requiring 4k throughout the whole video? No many. And if they do, rent the 6k for those times.. And bill them for it. ;-)
Yeah exactly. I love the color science though. But the good news is that all their new cameras will come with it. FOV was a deal breaker for me. Thanks again
Very professional presentation, clear and documented, without groundless considerations . Appreciate watching your presentation while BH is dispatching my own copy of this bad boy. I do agree mostly with your wishlist (RF mount nice to have especially for ND, NP batt for sure as power is an huge limitation, maybe FF sensor...) but you have to acknowledge the road that BM has covered in a few years by offering such a camera for less than 3K(in fact 6K for 2.5K, as a former RED fan boy will express it) and generally in nearly every aspect of DCI production (2 free Resolve studio license in the package). Even though they need to refine their QC process which seems a bit lacking, these aussie dudes desserve IMHO a good round of applause. Cheers
TOTALLY AGREE... and that's why i ended the video with a note about how BM rocked this market... they stepped on the toes of all the big players out there (RED-SONY-even Arri). I never intended to discredit or belittle BM, quite the opposite. I simply pointed out that this camera is not the answer for most people out there despite of the impressive titles of (6K RAW). Which doesn't mean it's a bad camera, but probably not as popular as the 4K and how that one shook the market. I'm sure you'll enjoy the 6K as much as I did when it came to the color science at least.
Thank you very much for sharing knowledge at such a level of expertise. Like many people, I admire your work and the quality of the channel. Today the price of the 6K bmpcc is around the price of 4K with a metabone, despite all the advantages mentioned in favor of the 4K + adapter version, is your position still the same? If you had none of these yet, today wich one of these would you choose? Thank you very much.
Thanks Thomas for the awesome support! Really appreciate it. The main advantage of the 6K honestly is sensor quality. But as you saw, lens compatibility will be hard. Since I have a lot of other cameras that are more compatible with lenses, then yes I would go for it. I LOVE it’s colors over the 4k. Color science wins in most cases with me. But again, that’s me, an answer very specific to my case
WOW. You deserve a LOOOT more subscribers man! This is the most thorough research I havd ever seen! Max Yuryev, finally someone topped you!😂 Give this man a sub and share guys!!
there is no proper comparison between the lumix gh5s and the bmpcc4k here on youtube. according to you, which one is better and can you please make a video related to this?
They're both great in their own ways... there's no (and will never be) a camera better than the other unless you're specifying what you need it for exactly. All depends on the type of project and output or post production.
Thanks!!! What camera will be a better selectio for youtube studio live streaming and recording? I see BMD added support of ATEM mini that supports only 1080 HDMI input. We need both 4k recording and 1080 live streaming. Looks like 1080 from 4k camera is pixelized on ATEM. Did you check 1080p in prores on 4k camera? Should we expect same bad HDMI out in 1080p on 6k camera? Thanks!!!!
Yes yes and yes ... you have out done most content creators by getting to the point, not adding silly gimmicks, kept it real and logical ... u just earned yourself a fan ... If possible make a review on the z cam e2 4k cinema camera and compare it with bmpcc4k I know the pocket 4k is more versatile and more practical but personally i might buy 6k in a day or two just torn between z cam e2 or pocket 6k as i already have the pocket 4k, ursa mini pro g2 and fuji x-t3 (i have a condition i want all the damn cameras)
THANKS Nouman!!! Welcome aboard. Really appreciate your support for the channel. I'm planning to work on a Zcam review hopefully soon actually. BMPCC6k might get an update later this year I feel. So I'd say with 4K, you can do pretty much everything and more from what the 6K does for now. I would hang on a bit
everything very good , except for the DOF test: what black magic means is that different size ogf sensor means different siza of circle of consfusion. Back to the film era: if I use a 50mm on a super 35 film camera it will have a different depth of field on a super 16 mm camera. Using a image converter, for me isn't a good choice to do this test. a smart thing to do was to see the same lens at same distance, only to check the DOF, then chosing the same frame with two different lenses to see how it does affect the depth of filed in the same shot (look at the Roger Deakins interview about large format).
Thanks Stefano... yeah I understand what you're saying. Problem is that I didnt have enough lenses and adapters to conduct all the tests I had in mind you know! But surely good point you have there
Noise is almost same, you just dont see it on 6K, beacause its much more darker and there is also one important point 4K has bigger pixel than 6K so if its materials on chip same and just has another grid, then pocket 4K should have a bit better noise than 6K-not sure about these materials and the color also depends on that you have more light in 4K and noise also depends on glass quaility, its absolutely bullshit get 50mm prime lens vs bad panassonic zoom glass.. better you should put sigma with adapter on 4K and than crop 6K.
About the noise, it was very clear to me that the 6K has a much better image with much less visible noise. I’m sure it didn’t show perfectly as I saw it on my screen due to the RU-vid compression, but for sure the 6K was surely better
Wow! This is a professional review! The editing and the information given! Kudos! I hope your channel blew up and you continue to create more awesome contents!
Great video, well produced. And amazing insight on the crop factors. The BM 6K is such a temptation because it’s very inspiring. That is one of the most important ‘factors’ to consider, but no specs can quantify that. Thanks for sharing. 🤟
Thank you so much Raja for the compliments. Indeed as you said. I wish it just used a different mount at least. But as it stands now it’s not that appealing. Thanks again
Thank you so much buddy for the kind words. yeah i know... the C200 is pretty good as well. The focusing system is pretty awesome. I would honestly hold off a little bit more till NAB 2020. Unless you have a specific shoot yo need it for.
nice video, new sub here. A key factor would be to check if new speedboosters for bmpcc4k is sharp wide open as some people say, because I have just read in one comment that you use m4/3 to ef ones.
Thank you so much for the support. Yes your appointment is very good and I was actually planning to buy the ultra version and maybe compare it with the ones I have.
Just subscribed! Your videos so far (I’ve watched two back to back on the 6k and 4K comparisons so far) have been some of the most detailed and informative I’ve seen. You know what you’re talking about and it shows! And the editing is spot on, the graphics with what you say is amazing and a step above a lot of other youtubers I’ve seen. I also very much like that you know it’s not that one is “better” than the other but comes down to what works best for you, with the price reduction of the 6k that became its selling point for me and why I opted for the 6k. That is also because I have Resolve and ssd storage for handle and hold the 6k RAW. I’ve shot on both cameras and even as a 6k owner I have nothing bad to say about the 4k.
Thanks a lot Stephen, your words are what keeps me doing what I do. Really happy you liked everything and hope you find more videos as useful as those ones
Great video my friend! I have to say that in the end the 6k is the winner. Just the difference in noise is reason enough to go with the 6k. You never want to add speed boosters to your glass as they have not provided a product that does not greatly diminish the optic quality of the glass you paid all that money to get. It is self defeating for any professional level project. Maybe for weddings and such it maybe a compromise that people can live with. But as a pro cinematographer for over 30 years I want to in the strongest of terms say that the 4k is not even close to the picture quality of the 6k. This camera does have limitations, but when you compare with the Red line up, especially the lower end cameras, this camera is a serious competitor. The lens mount I feel is a fantastic choice for them to go with for numerous reasons, largely the type of user for this camera will most likely have a lineup of Canon pro level glass and so I see that as a serious plus for BM and their market share. In addition to the PL mount is just another plus. The one thing I would say, is that when you factor in all the extra accessories into rigging up the 6k (or the 4k for that matter) you have to seriously look at the URSA as it is clearly the better choice of any pro level work over the 6k and it is ALWAYS better to have those features built into the camera as opposed to adding gear piece meal to make the camera work in a serious film production environment. But for a portable B Camera, the 6k offers true value and you really can't go wrong with it. Just don't be fooled at the low price as it like the Reds requires a serious list of add ons to make it truly useable in a pro level environment. I was disappointed you did not touch on the AF aspects of the camera as this technology is going to change pro level cameras in the very near future. The days of pulling focus will soon be a side note in filming as a past era filming making just like film has sadly gone out of vogue for most productions. This is one area BM needs to work seriously on if they plan to be part of any future film industry. Their cameras absolutely will need pro level AF abilities and this will be a make or break issue for ANY of the camera manufactures as things move forward. Thanks for the great video.
Hey Randall... the winner is what makes more sense to you in the end. All you mentioned here is a reflection of that. Speed booster is not that bad at all honestly. it's not a perfect scenario, but the differences I found were not deal breakers IMHO. I Didn't mention AF as they suck so much in it. And I do agree it's making its way into Pro level cameras now. And yes the 6K has a better image... I would say it's wise to wait for another camera that could combine best of both worlds. Thanks again for the awesome feedback and comment
It’s a bit subjective. But what I have here is not enough to judge I tested on many other subjects and it did look a lot better. They’re very random that I couldn’t really put in this video 😉
Amazing comparison. Thanks for sharing. Sometimes we get really hung up on the 'next best thing' when the tools at hand are perfectly good enough. They made a big mistake with the mount.
Thanks Richard. Absolutely true. That's why I felt that we still need to be reminded that not every new announcement is a perfect gear for you... we need to focus more on what really works for our style and most of all, create ;)
This is such a great video! I just watched it again! I'm using it as reference for a pre-production package for a January shoot. If only the S1H could record Raw via the USB-C port, and if that Raw was lossless compression like REDCode or BRaw. BRaw is the perfect shoe-in for color grading in Resolve; I'd rather use it than other methods. For 5.9/6k, these cameras really need a 12G SDI port. This is a great reference video!
The sheer amount of expertise, not to mention time, involved in the video is astonishing! I learned more in this 19 minute video than I did with hours, and hours, of research on the internet. I'm very impressed and I definitely respect your DP skills. Keep up the amazing work!
Yes correct, the episode was published before the official announcement. Check this updated episode ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8p6wwm-cANI.html
Dude you are on another level. Clearly a very experienced and knowledgeable filmmaker and it's refreshing to see such high quality content! Personally I like shooting my vintage lenses wide open and the metabones on my Pocket 4K just makes those beautifully soft lenses look bad. I'm with you on the RF mount and I hope that comes in the MKII. I have to applaud BM though for sticking with EF for their long time users who have invested in the mount. Keep up the solid work! 👏
Brandon, thank you so much for your awesome words of support. happy to have you onboard with my review. I also have some vintage glass that I use in special projects. and Surely we all applaud BM for disturbing the market with their awesome products. Because of them many of indie filmmakers now can afford shooting raw since their first raw camera. Thanks again
Can you, please, give me some more thoughts on "metabones makes vintage lenses look bad"? I didn't try it on pocket4k yet, but I was hoping to get it for my vintage lens too.
@@Skasparoff In this video around 11 mins you can see the difference in sharpness with and without a speedbooster. You will notice this smearing look with the aperture wide open especially on lenses that aren't that sharp wide open to begin with. I have been shooting with a Pocket 4k and Metabones setup with vintage glass for a few months and it's not a bad setup but there is certainly a difference without the extra glass in front of the sensor. Pocket 4k is a gorgeous camera but if you also have to buy an expensive Metabones the 6K looks more appealing in my opinion.
Brandon Murray - yep, I noticed the softness in this shootout at 11 min, but I was thinking maybe some more weird things happens with vintage lens. But you got me thinking on this more anyway, looks like I can regret if will try such setup. Thanks, Brandon
Good audio. Good music. Good cuts. *Excellent graphics showing the cameras and the lenses you were using for the following test. Excellent tests with the side by side and pans!!!!* I would highly recommend this video to anyone interested in these cameras!
EXCELLENT! I have the S1. I used to shoot BlackMagic 4K Production cam with internal SSDs for many years. Lugged around batteries and stupid hoods. The whole process drove me nuts but I simply loved the color science of BM. But I am a run and gun shooter in other countries and I just couldn’t take it any more. BM focuses heavily on one thing only - image quality. And they nail it in my mind. Even watching this film makes me really want to go back into the BM world. But the S1 with VLog produces a very attractive image and it has a real EVF and a real battery and i shoot in 6K Open Gate. So I’m 85% there for image quality. Maybe 80%. But with ZERO hassle. Zero! It’s a shame and like you say, BM has the power to solve these simple problems. Even if they didn’t go full frame, they could solve every other issue we all seem to struggle with. If they do that, I may return. Thanks for your detailed analysis. I SUBBED!
Yeah I always wonder why companies have the tech to have a near perfect camera, yet they don’t go for it. Thanks again for the awesome feedback. It’s always great to hear what other filmmakers are doing and their setup. I’ll be uploading my preview on the S1H today by the way. So stay tuned 😉
THE DP JOURNEY ah......so now I have to hit the bell too! LOL! I was quite annoyed that Panasonic did not release all three S cams all at once. But oh well. I carefully considered weather I wanted the S1H after buying the S1 (and waiting waaaaaay too long for VLog) but 6K in 8 bit and 16:9 kind of disappointed me. I shoot Open Gate all the time in 10bit 200mbs and essentially All-Intra as each frame is its own independent image. So I loose a little horizontal resolution over the S1H but gain vertical pixels instead but with 10 bit. 4:2:0 versus 4:2:2 color. Add to the mix weather proofing which lets me go near swimming pool action or dusty deserts, and I’m happy with S1. I needed a true hybrid and I got one. Looking forward to your review!
Thanks a LOT Jenya!! With awesome support from amazing people like you, I'm sure I'll get more subscribers... Feel free to share the video and hopefully we'll reach a lot more people. Thanks again for the support
Thanks for your comment, the main problem with ND filters is that most of the ones out there or not good quality. The best one I’ve seen so far is called breakthrough, they don’t have any color shifts at all. Check them out
Great video watched it twice. I'm planning to buy camera for music videos, my preferences are 4k Raw with 60fps. Which camera will suits me? What you recommend?
Great to hear buddy! Many music videos depend on using wide angles. So i would say BM4K with adapter would give you a wider FOV. if wide shots are not very important in your workflow, then ^k has a better image quality. Also consider the S1H. I have a couple of videos out there abotu it ;)
This is amazing content....so detailed , yet well explained in simple terms with graphics....alot of work in the edit....but much appreciated ....subscribed !!! Look forward to more of your videos.
Thanks for such great comprassion. I found that bmpcc 6k is better in noise factor and its pretty important for me. Plus you can buy used Magic Booster for around like 200-300 usd and then it will be almost a full frame and withiur changing in quality like its with Metabons in 4k. So this is no brainer for choosing 6k. Of course 4k cheaper but here in Germany 4k cost 650-900eur, and 6k - 800-1100 eur, 200-400 eur its not so big difference for a better quality
Love your review... I ordered the 6k as well, but after shooting with it for a couple days, I didn't notice enough of a difference between the 4k, so I sent it back so someone else could order it and give it a home... Either way, I don't feel people can go wrong with the 4k or 6k as they are BOTH amazing tools. The important thing we need not forget is "We are CREATORS, let's go CREATE"
Ty... you couldn’t say it better! Exactly, cameras are only tools to help us realize our visions. Here I was only sharing my personal feedback and made it clear that it does not really fit my style of shooting. Thanks for the comment, I hope everyone reads it 👍 would surely love to hear from you in my upcoming episodes
Yes.... I would have paid more for an RF mount and flippy screen...or even Vari screen. PLEASE blackmagic.... just those two. RF and a variscreen....thats it. I already own 2 UMPros G1, P6K, p4K and BMCC. If you release an RF version with a vari screen, and charge an extra 500 bucks, i will order. And I am sure many other working pros and enthusiasts will too. I don't even need a DR liscence key. Sigh. If they can only read our comments and talk to the engineers.
@@MichaelWeizenfeld I dint notice any aberrations. Not on my case anyway. Here is a job I idid in 4k with metabones XL: vimeo.com/351177361 If there are aberrations... they are very small.
I'm in broadcasting, and I can tell when someone puts time and considerable effort into a video. This is so well done it is hard to put into words. I am subscribing as soon as I finish this comment, and I will seek out your work to see what I can learn. We all need inspiration, and I'm looking forward to that from you. Thank you for that!
Thank you so much Buck for the amazing words and support to my channel, you said it right, it takes so much time working on those videos since I try to simplify things as much as possible to all levels of filmmakers. I’m already working on my next video and as you might expect, it’s taking a lot of time to prepare. So stay tuned and hopefully you would like the work.
This is such an amazing and dedicated artist. Just the amount of information you break down for us is priceless. Thank you so much! Looking to purchasing a 4K
Hahah... thanks Sebastian for the awesome words of support! I just launched the channel very recently, so still working on growing it. With amazing people like you I’ll hopefully reach there!
+Moczadlo Yann thanks buddy for the support. I hear a lot of great reviews about the Tamron 28-75! Honestly the look of the lens is pretty much up to you and your style of shooting. A rather personal choice
