The whole setup reminds me of the scenes from the movie "The Naked Gun", where Nordberg keeps upgrading his pistol on the rooftop with additional elements and ends up sitting on an anti-aircraft gun. 😂😂
Great - now all we need is a manufacturer to offer a handle for the iPhone 15 / 15 Pro with a built-in USB hub, battery and the ability to install an internal nvme SSD.
I’m a fan of the Moment MagSafe Cage. More attachment points than you can shake a stick at and the MagSafe phone attachment future proofs the cage. Rig it up any way you want and you’re good to go!
I have a video coming out with exactly this. It eliminates all those goofy wires and dongles hanging off the phone. The only hold up im having, is i cant seem to get the external audio to record stereo. Seems like with the blackmagic app, it only records mono. You can see in this video too, hes only in mono.
@@TechandFood Hast du einen Link? Auf der Smallrig Seite kann ich das Teil nicht finden. Am ehesten in die Richtung geht nach das Tilta Khronos System - aber auch da sind mir noch etwas zu viel Kabel nötig.
The app is not recognizing my external SSD, do you know what it could be? The native iPhone app recognizes and records on it. It's funny that when the SSD was in Windows format, the app identified it but didn't record it. Now that I formatted it for Mac, it no longer identifies it.
@@iphoneographers After I formatted it to EXFAT it still wasn't showing up. I uninstalled the app, installed it again and it started to appear! But basically when I try to record, it records a little and says that the SSD was 'removed' or there is some problem that in the final seconds, it loses a lot of frames. I tested the SSD with the cable and it is recording at 900 mbps, it shouldn't be losing frames, right? I think I'll have to change the SSD to see if it's not the problem. How fast is your cable?
Hello. First of all, thank you for replying to my question with this video. To became perfect, some manufacturer has to create a case that can have the ssd and a rode wireless go attached and that fits in a pocket
Why doesn't my screen on the app show USB-C to 3.5 headphone jack adapter when I plug in my Rode mic exactly like you show it, but instead it shows Headset Microphone?
Great stuff. I'm really hoping someone comes out with a device to make this all simpler. I believe you can also charge your phone with your bigger USB hub by plugging in a power bank to the USB-C port with the lightning bolt on it....
if you have extra money yes or if you are making money using phone video, photo, etc. I use Samsung s22 and Filmic Pro and the video is so clear (use a gimbal). for iPhone 15 pro or Promax don't need much Gimbol to stabilize your video. I have GoPro 11 and very nice, but I will buy a GoPro, and return the GoPro 11 to Costco. I bought the 11, and after 9 days the GoPro 12 came in the market.
@@bazlur-Vancouver I like your attitude I’m not making money but I’d love to in the future, as well as I have a contract renewal so I was between the s23 the pixel 8 or the 15 pro max and they all are great but the pixel has the promotion right now with the free watch. I definitely love using the smooth 5s gimbal for stabilization though but I was also looking at the go pro but then again I’m not sure anymore what to do what do you think
Subjective opinion. :) The 12PM is very solid, but the 15PM is considerably better now as it relates to professional quality video with Apple log and SSD recording. So it really just depends on what you’re shooting. If you’re due for an upgrade then 100% yes.
For my iPhone 15 I bought a Trs to usb-C from hollyland on Amazon and it works great. No need for the dongle like I had on my older iPhone that had lightning connection.
Hi BlackMagic on iPhone 15 pro, can I shoot in 1080p H264 in the same time storing in the SSD drive ? because on iPhone 15 pro apps It is limited to Pro Res.
How do you connect an S5iix via wifi and use the tether app? My Dilemma is that i need to use the tether app on my PC when i record talking head videos. But i would also like to record to an SSD which uses the usb c port. So if i can connect to the PC (windows) via wifi and use the tether app that would solve that problem. But not even panasonic is sure about how to do this ( i called them) or if it is even possible. I would imagine that if you can connect the GH5 2 via wifi you can do the s52x as well. Any thoughts?
I have always have had to use Rode's App "Rode Central" in conjunction with my Rode Micro and Rode Mics, while going Facebook Live or Filmic Pro. If I don't the audio will be low.
@@iphoneographers Yes! The audio will be low if Rode Central stays open in the background and idle for a while. Once and a while if I go directly from RC to FB Live the audio will be low. But the chances of low audio increase more if RC is idle for a while. I ALWAYS go directly from RC to FC Live or any film App for that matter.
I've tried using my rode microphones into a USB C mic adapter with TRS to TRRS adapter and the audio sounds like garbage. I may need to try this Rode adapter.
Great video. I had seen another video out there where a guy said you couldn't do all 3 things at once: HDMI out, dual channel audio in, AND record externally. So now I'm encouraged and wanting a 15 Pro again. Thanks for the demonstration. QUESTION: Have you explored Blackmagic Camera app's 4 Channel Audio Option?
I have not used the four channel output, yet, not something I would do very often. But interesting nonetheless. Planning more blackmagic app videos in the future.
you can also use a Sabrent NVMe drive but you need external power to push it. The benefit of that is faster speed when you eventually transfer files to your main computer or iPad Pro for editing. The small Belkin 4 into 1 port USB-C hub has a port for external power like a small power bank. Into the USB-C hub you can run a USB-c DJI wireless mic or equalvilent. Lots of possibilities now that we have a USB-C iPhone. Thanks for the audio tips with the Black Magic Cam app. I learned some things.
That was something I was waiting for a set up like that with a iPhone, man you are the one so far who has done it thank you, I wish to give you more than one like, very good job .
Great stuff. Too bad it all couldn't just go back to the old Android route or kind of like Sony Xperia phones. Having an internal SD card slot and a headphone jack. Pop in a 1TB sd card and plug a mic into the headphone jack. Just pure simplicity.
I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max with T-Mobile service I use for phone, web surfing, content and live streaming. I just bought an iPhone 15 Pro Max for strictly content. Imagine if Apple came out with a solid chunky Content/Cinematic/Film/Video version of an iPhone with distinct A/V input/output ports, mounting points and lens mounts, etc.? I would have bought it. It would be a niche machine.
I’ve connected a Rode mic to the white triple port adaptor. The SSD works only when alone, after connecting also the mic my IPhone 15 doesn’t see the SSD. What can I do?
If you’re connecting the Rode mic via analog that won’t affect the USB ports, so that would be odd and it might be bad. If it’s all USB ports, then guessing you only have one data transfer port that’s working or the other are for charging only.
Cool setup. Do you know of a hub which will will work with an iPhone 15 Pro Max and output video of USB-C to a USB-C video monitor? I have a few USB-C hubs, none of them will allow video output through the USB-C ports (the monitor works fine if I plug it into the phone directly).
I haven’t tried that as I’ve only used HDMI output which works well. The one thing to check is that you’re using a data transfer port and not a charging port. You could also try an HDMI to USB-C adapter… amzn.to/4eXcWSb
Thank you for this. I've been seeing all the hype over SSDs being used with iphones, but nothing about how to use this in conjunction with a microphone which is super crucial.
Some USB-C to headphone jack adapters, like the one you used in this video, only allow mono audio recording. Some work with stereo. You can also buy a TRS to USB-C cable. Comica sells one that works.
I've got the 15 Pro and I've seen that when I finish recording, depending on the size of the video it take more or less time to appear on the SD Card. I think that when the external storage isn't fast enough the shot is buffered and then sent to the external storage. Maybe it's not happening when it's a SSD with fast writing, but might be wrong.
Have seen that too - and I think that’s the case that it’s buffering as it goes to the card. This is good though as it allows slower cards to work. But definitely something to keep an eye on and make sure the files don’t have dropped frames.
Is there a lightning hub adapter like the advanced hub you have. I'm still using my 14 pro max, and wanting to connect an monitor, ssd, and mic. Please help thx 🙏🏽
With the 14 you can’t record out to an SSD. You can go out to the AI Micro for sound or send an HDMI signal to a monitor, but it’s more limiting due to the connection… amzn.to/3NY77rJ
you can use ACASIS USB 3.0 Hub Type C HDMI 4K 30Hz Docking Station with 100W PD for all device you need to connect phone, that hub is small like small rode ai anda can connect to hdmi monitor too with one hub
I have Acasis hub 10in1. Everything works properly until you cross 5 min recording via sdxc card or 2 half min via usb-c external ssd and randomly drop via m2 ssd and you cannot connect anymore until you connect to laptop or macbook. It was like a gold for me, but I will turn back to a usb-c splitter because I want to use extern ssd & mic too

This is a huge help with my filming with my iPhone 15 Pro. I used your link to get the advanced USB-C hub which comes with the HDMI out port. This is great for when I'm filming myself and I can hook up a monitor to see what I'm filming. Thanks so much for putting this together.
Very important to stress: the Apple cables are “2” NOT USB 3 data transfer. Was concerned about data to SSD before you introduced the hubs. While you’ve shown very affordable solutions(!), its time to find a rig- or print a container.
Hi there- great video...I just got a 15pro max...and I have a Rode Videomicro I would like to use with it for audio. I don't need wireless. I guess ALL I would need is a mini jack to USB-C adapter for it to work with the iphone? Previously this mic would connect to my Canon 90D and draw power from the camera. Will it draw power from the iphone now? I would prefer NOT to deal with adapters etc...but could you recommend a shotgun mic that already has a USB-C connector? Similar in size to the videomicro or the Deity and under $100. No need to spend more in my case. what USB-C compact mini shot gun would you recommend? Something simple...wired is fine-just plug and play...thanks
I need to do more testing, but you can just use a 3.5mm to USB-C adapter for most mics. amzn.to/46lOnII I’m not familiar with any usb-c small shotgun ones, but there are lav mics like that.
thanks so much....I found a small shot gun mic - The comica VM10 PRO Camera Microphone Dual-Mode USB Shotgun Microphone and I will give it a try. I don't expect the best audio quality but better and cleaner than the iphone's built in audio. @@iphoneographers
one issue i have is when i have the SSD plugged into the hub, the battery doesn't charge the phone. i also trued it with a regular y-splut usb-c cable and it still doesn't charge the phone. is there any way to overcome this and have it charge the phone at the same time? I tried to put a magsafe power charger on the back, but after a bit the phone got too hot and i got a "system pressure high" warning & it stops recording.
Are you using an “Advanced“ style hub like I showed? The pass-through for charging should work if so. But remember, some ports are for charging and some are for data transfer, but they’re not the same. And yeah, MagSafe can get hot but also so can regular charging, especially if you’re shooting 4K and higher frame rate or in log. The phone definitely heats up.
@@iphoneographers i used the Belkin fast multi-port usb-c hub from your gear list. it seems i should be using the advanced one that you suggested. I just ordered it so will try it out. Thanks!
Hey Blake, great video as always, really like that Advanced USB hub set-up, did you figure out a way to neatly incorporate it into your rig in the end?
Not really. :) Since I switch cages a lot I’m just going DIY and rigging it as needed. But I have used some Bongo ties to secure stuff… amzn.to/43wxonq - also still debating using some Velcro maybe on the side of the cage or on the SSD holder… amzn.to/3TMx8xo. But still a work in progress!
Sure. I use one a lot. But having this as an option or B camera is great. Also too you can’t shoot 4K 60 Apple Log without going to an SSD with the native app.
What am I doing wrong? I tried using an apple hub adapter on the iphone 15 pro max so that I could link a USB Hub that has an as card. However, it says that the phone can not power it?
What you have to be careful when using the hub with a microphone and sSD. The audio will pick up robotic signals whenever the SSD is reading or writing. I'm trying to find a fix.
If you have time, can you do a video about your lenses and set up that you’d use for iPhone 15 pro max film making. I’d like to see how you use it if possible.
@@iphoneographers thank you. Also, would this work on a gimbal? Or would this be too heavy? I know on some of your BTS you were using a gimbal for some shots on the older phones w/ wireless external monitoring
Yes, it could, you would just need to use a heavier duty gimbal like the Crane M3. And then, if you wanted to attach a monitor, you would need to use an arm and I would suggest a small 4” or so monitor.
I have an iPhone 12 pro max and I shoot in the Filmic Pro app with 10 Bit log. I noticed that when I add the footages in premier pro, the videos are lagging really bad even after rendering the videos. Do you think that it’s my laptop that cannot perform the tasks that I am asking it to do or is there something wrong that I am doing. Your advice would be great, thank you.
Premiere doesn’t handle the VFR footage from phones very well, especially on older machines. But rendering should solve that, though make sure you choose to render to ProRes 422 or similar- not HEVC as that really taxes a system. The other options are to do a proxy workflow or transcode the iPhone shots to ProRes.
@@iphoneographers I know how to render a sequence or a video when it on the timeline, but how do you render a video from HEVC to Pro Res? I tried looking for videos on youtube and I can't seem to find any that shows how to do so.
@@iphoneographers Thank you so much for your reply. I will definitely try what u said. I am a big fan of your LUTS btw. Purchased some couple months ago
