Grear review, thank you! I like that Blackmagic has chosen to implement the tiny screw hole in their l-mount. This can be used in combination with the SIGMA MC-31 PL mount adapter. You will get a tiny screw with it, which you can use to screw in the adapter into the mount, making the camera basically a native PL mount without any wiggle.

The lack of option to select your desqueeze is disappointing, but hopefully something BMD will fix via firmware. And adding the option to desqueeze vertically would also be great. Turning the camera sideways to record 5:6 with a 2x anamorphic would result in a 1.66 aspect ratio, which would a really cool look when paired with a Proteus or Pavo

Great insights as always, this has helped me rule the camera out for my purposes as I'd only really consider it for my needs if the low light performance were superior to the 6k Pro. One thing confuses me though, which is that I had always thought that a 6k full frame sensor with larger photocells would always have better low light performance than a 6k S35 sensor. Why is this not the case versus the 6k Pro? I ask because I'm currently deciding between the 6k Pro and some other full frame sensor cameras, and my use case includes using s35 lenses alongside full frame lenses, and so I don't want to compromise on low light performance when using a full frame sensor cropped in... but is that over-simplifying things? I plan to test the cameras on my shortlist, but I'm confused by the principles in operation here... any help appreciated!

I just bought the Black Magic 6K Full Frame body and did some night test shots at various ISO levels. Unfortunately, after doing many thorough tests and making sure I was not doing anything wrong, I have horizontal banding issues. Such a big disappointment. Unfortunately the horizontal banding issue is more common than I thought. The horizontal banding issue is highly noticeable from about ISO 200 to ISO 2500. Above roughly ISO 2500 the banding disappears a fair amount but, as one would expect, the image is quite noisy and unusable. I have been shooting various cameras over 25 plus years and never seen such a problem. I was shooting 24p 180 degree shutter with 50 hz anti flicker (Japan 100v 50hz electric) and doing everything I could to stop the horizontal banding and nothing worked. Contacted BM Tech support and they viewed my footage on my YT channel and they agree “ We confirm that the excessive banding is occurring in the video.” They want me to send them the BRAW file so they can do further inspection. Been a rough week with my camera but BM Tech support are helping as best they can to fix the problem.

No doubt at some stage you will formally test the dynamic range of this sensor configuration. I’m curious to see whether that 13th stop can effectively register above the noise floor. That seems a bit doubtful given the range you demonstrated here between clipping and unusable under exposure. Regardless I will add the CC 6k to my kit very soon. Open gate “cross cropping” (to coin a phrase) can save quite a bit of time when you need to pull social media content from 16:9 material you’ve already filmed. The extra head room makes for much better verticals. And though this camera may lack the IBIS and autofocus found in hybrids (and a growing number of higher cost cine cameras), for the price it handles timecode far better than the hybrids, and it can digest many sorts of DC sources while leaving the USB-C port free for other purposes, *internal* RAW instead of having to bulk up with an external recorder drawing additional juice from the rig, the 5” screen is often a big bonus especially when you want to move quickly with a gimbal and it also makes the touch screen interface less cramped and fiddly to deal with when in a hurry, and overheating is never an issue. Enough said, but so often reviewers miss a forest of Blackmagic advantages (at the price point) because of the one “tree” named “autofocus”.
@willmannering

It's the same sensor as the A7III and Ronin 4D 6K, so there's no surprise here the dynamic range is not great compared to even the best mirrorless cameras.
@waveland

@@willmannering The Venice2 is advertised as 16 stops, but in most configurations the effective range is around 13. And even if the sensor array is the same as the A7III that doesn’t mean the signal processing hasn’t been tweaked and improved along the way. So we will just have to see. But other than the Alexa 35, most sensors these days are still closely grouped in terms of effective DR.

I have a question, what is the benefit of recording braw internally on a blackmagic camera vs externally on a mirrorless camera as it relates to the actual codec? I ask this because I’m currently shopping for a new camera and I find I can get a used s5 (original) and blackmagic video assist for about the same price as this camera. For my personal workflow, I wouldn’t really run the camera without a rig in the first place so the additional bulk of an external monitor isn’t an issue-and times where I would run it stripped down, the internal h.264 codecs of the s5 should still be enough, albeit, perhaps at the expense of my workflow in post. Does blackmagic do anything like limiting compression for external recording or any other weird quirks I should know? Tldr; is the benefit to internal braw, over external braw, just a form factor benefit, or are there more benefits I should know of?

I don't think you can record BRAW externally via the HDMI but only through the USBC to an SSD on this camera. So for the Blackmagic cameras, there is no difference though it is theoretically safer to record internally to prevent risk of an accidental disconnect of the cable to the SSD. They did mention at 9:46 that you can record BRAW externally on the S5iiX and the A7siii (via HDMI to compatible recorder/monitors) but they did not have access at the time. OBP did some tests on the S5ii with the BRAW if you want to see those.
@questioneverything680
@questioneverything680 9 месяцев назад
I meant is there a difference recording braw externally on something like an S5/S5IIX/XH2 etc. vs the internal recording on native blackmagic cameras. Like is the external recording limited in any way (i.e. do you not get as many compression options, are you stuck shooting at either a variable/constant bitrate etc.). I’m not really interested in any image quality differences as I know both images are good. Just looking for more information about the different options recording braw from a mirrorless camera.
@AbdonPhirathon
@AbdonPhirathon 9 месяцев назад
@@questioneverything680 The only thing you cannot do when shooting Braw externally is change the ISO in Davinci Resolve. Blackmagic cameras shooting internal Braw will allow you to change ISO in Davinci Resolve. And obviously, shooting externally doesn’t give you Blackmagic colors. Other than that, you’re getting 90% of what you can do with a Blackmagic by recording externally, and you aren’t going to be losing out of the other benefits of shooting Braw.

This is a weird product in Blackmagic's lineup. In the launch video Grant Petty said that they kept the same body so that existing Pocket 6K users could switch over and keep the same accessories; but why would I switch from a Pocket 6K/6K Pro to the 6K Cinema only to sacrifice the higher frame rates the earlier models provide + internal giving up the interal ND's of the 6K Pro? Plus I've already got myself kitted out with Super35 EF glass - so to adapt the lenses to the L Mount 6K Cinema would turn it from a full frame 6K camera into a Super35 4K camera. This just adds to my growing list of frustrations with design choices that Blackmagic have made: - Still none of their cameras provider dual card recording - The Studio 4K, Studio 4K Pro, Studio 6K Pro, and Micro Studio Cameras all have 12G SDI yet the Pocket 6K & Pocket 6K Pro and 6K Cinema only have HDMI out at 1080p. - The ATEM mini switchers can control Blackmagic camera settings and trigger record over HDMI/SDI but the VideoAssist monitors cannot. - The cameras have a bafflingly limited range of anamorphic desqueezing options. - The Ursa Broadcast G2 can only control the exposure as "Gain" and can't be changed to ISO, and vise-versa with their other cameras. - Some cameras allow users to switch between shutter angle and shutter speed, while others are locked to shutter angle.

The form factor is such a buzz kill, I would love to pick this up, but I really can't get over the body design. I was on a shoot with the pocket 6K the other day, and there was a shot that I couldn't get without reconfiguring the camera because of the way the battery hangs off the back. It really is just awful design not built with ergonomics in mind. The images out of thing is sweeeeeeeeeet, but damn if the body doesn't give me the chills.

@MtZionMediaPro
@MtZionMediaPro 9 месяцев назад
To be honest, I used to hate the body shape because I would want to rig up my camera. But what I realize is that if I just use the internal batteries, & keep like four or five on hand, it really gets the job done and I don't have to do any unnecessary rigging. It makes it super easy to get amazing footage handheld, and there in a gimbal quickly. That being said, I do wish that they kept the pocket in the name of this new camera because that's what the body style is. For the actual cinema camera, they should have went with a smaller Ursa form factor.
@SereneBobcat
@SereneBobcat 9 месяцев назад
@@MtZionMediaPro I don't know, that brings another inconvenience of frequent battery swaps. My last shoot had some long days, and two Vmounts were barely enough, I couldn't imagine needing to swap batteries 6,7,8 times during the course of the day. At the end of the day that is what this is about, compromises. I do love that it is a small camera, the menu system, and the 5 inch monitor, but it is a body that causes too many workarounds. When you pull it out of the box to use it as a cinema camera you have to go hunting for solutions specifically caused by this body design. I would love a Blackmagic cinema camera that was a smaller Ursa. The fucked up thing about that las announcements is if they put the sensor for the Cinema Camera 6K or the 6kFF inside a bigger Micro Cinema camera body, I would be all over that.

@@andrewkwhitecustomfilms Well a camera body being too light is both a pro and a con-- depends entirely on your use case. I just enjoy watching your content! It's always on point and precise, BUT - I would love to see more in depth criticism. For most of the reviews I feel like you leave big downsides behind, trying to keep it soft with the brand instead of taking the risk and really talk about the downsides. There are many downsides to talk about which would not only be more interesting to hear from you, but which could also attract the brands to listen more to the customers needs, if well respected Channels like yours talk about it more.

Overall it looks like a pretty impressive 1st full frame offering from Blackmagic. But the specs are just not quite there to compete with other similarly priced or slightly more expensive cameras. This camera needs faster frame rate options at higher resolutions and better autofocus if Blackmagic wants it to stand out in the crowded field of mirrorless full frame cameras. Internal BRaw is amazing as always, but it can't be the only major thing setting this camera apart from other brands at this price point.

Is it though? As far as I‘m aware, there are not to many mirrorless hybrids with two mini XLR inputs, OG recording, Anamorphic desqueeze options and a 5“ 1500 nit Screen. Not to mention a resolve license. That being said, I would love to see a Box style 6K Pro or 6K FF with an external 5“ Control Monitor Solution. That should not keep me from appreciating any of BMDs Pocket or now Cinema Cameras for what they are.
@DynamicPhil84
@DynamicPhil84 9 месяцев назад
@@kunstspielklavier185 I think filmmakers are willing to pay a bit more for a reasonable, more fully-functional Blackmagic cinema camera, box-style as you say. For $500 more, you can get the Z-Cam F6, which shoots full frame 6K, has better frame rate options than the BMC6K, is more durable and modular instead of the cheap plastic Blackmagic can't seem to stop using, and can even shoot external BRaw. Yes, you have to get a separate monitor and it starts at a higher price initially. So I think if Blackmagic would have built this camera out in a more robust way, more durable material, more frame rate options, etc. and only charged $1K more for it, I think it would be a much more viable option. $3500 for a complete 6K cine camera is still a great deal.

One of the flaws many people make when doing these types of tests, is that there is no such thing as a "native ISO" when shooting raw (or Braw). Really, it's misinformation or a misunderstanding. Red is about the only one who figured this out. When shooting in other codecs, like prores, it's a different story and it does come into play. But not with raw recording. I would be more interested in seeing this test applied with all cameras at the same ISO, since shooting them at different ones essentially changes the exposure, and it's not an apples to apples comparison
@kunstspielklavier185
@kunstspielklavier185 9 месяцев назад
So RAW negates a Sensors native ISO ratings? Would shooting shooting at the same ISO not be unfair? If cam A has a sensor rated at say 500 ISO and cam b has 1000 ISO, for arguments sake assuming both have 12 Stops of DR an both habe 6 stops each below and above middle grey. Would that not shift on cam b exposed for 500 ISO making a comparison of Latitude inaccurate? Should you not compare Sensors at their respective „sweet spot“? Could you please elaborate?
@leebrandt8597
@leebrandt8597 9 месяцев назад
@@kunstspielklavier185 Shooting a camera at ISO 500 would absolutely not be the same as another one shooting at 1000, even if the manufacturers rate their individual cameras at those numbers. Native ISO is meaningless for raw recording, and placing both cameras at the same value makes more sense. What the guys from this video have done is to set middle gray at different ISO values to compensate for the difference in exposure. The problem with their methodology is that the signal sensitivity shifts with ISO. For example if you view on any camera dynamic range chart, the higher the ISO, the more latitude in the highlights. Therefore, ISO 800 has better highlight retention than 400, by one stop difference. Going back to your question, which goes along with what I'm saying, the 12 stops of DR in your scenario would shift towards the highlights at higher ISO, and towards the shadows in low ISO. To give you an example of how they tested this doesn't work: I did a highlight retention test on my Pocket 6k Pro. At 400, I'm getting 8.3 stops above middle grey. At 800, I'm getting 9.3. But again, there is no native ISO for raw. In other codecs it makes more sense to stick to them. So don't feel obligated to shoot at 400. There's other scenarios where 800 makes way more sense, especially with harsh sunlight situations. To give my last example: When the Alexa 35 came out, many people have deduced that there's a better argument for it having a native ISO of 400, and at the initial release, that's what Arri agreed with. But later, they suggested to make it 800. Why? for the same reasons I'm pointing out. Doesn't it seem weird that they changed the number later? Of course it does, since that number is basically a suggestion on where to expose, but as filmmakers, you should make sure to know which ISO applies best for each different scenario, not be stuck to one number
@kunstspielklavier185
@kunstspielklavier185 9 месяцев назад
I still can‘t quite follow your train of thought. I get that changing ISO is just moving the respective reference point for middle grey and allocating Latitude above and below differently. So comparing different sensors at their respective „middle“ would make the most sense, would it not? Would the problem you described not get worse if comparing different Sensors at the same ISO? Picking ISO 400 for example: ARRI states their Alev3 Sensor to have 6.6 Stops above and 7.9 Stops below middle grey. Sony at base iso 800 rates iso 400 on the FX9 as having 5 stops above and 10 stops below middle grey. BMD at „native“ iso 400 set to 400 is rated at 5.9 above and 7.6 below middle grey. How is that a fair comparison assuming identical exposure? That was what I meant in my example. If Camera A and B are both rated as having 12 Stops total dynamic range and 6 Stops each above and below middle grey, the only difference being Cam A hitting this target at iso 500 while cam b does so at iso 1000. if I where to compare the two at iso 1000, cam b would still have 6 stops above and below middle grey, while cam a might now have 7 above and 5 below. Why do you think it would make more sense comparing the two not at their respective midpoint regarding latitude but instead comparing one at its most even to another one pushed or pulled by one stop?
@kunstspielklavier185
@kunstspielklavier185 9 месяцев назад
Why would native ISO be meaningless when shooting raw? Looking at cameras with dual native or base ISOs I would think deciding which native ISO range you shoot in makes all the difference. Taking the FX9 as an example. Shooting at iso 2000 at base iso 800 yields 7-ish stops above and 8-ish stops below middle grey. Shooting at iso 2000 in base iso 4000 yields 5 stops above and 10 stops below middle grey. If you mean to say that native iso numbers seem rather arbitrarily labled by manufacturers, I would absolutely agree. However comparing sensors with actually different sensitivities at the same iso makes no sense to me. Especially looking for an apples to apples comparison.
@kunstspielklavier185
@kunstspielklavier185 9 месяцев назад
@@leebrandt8597i also absolutly agree that you should also know how to push your exposure as far as possible and understand how your camera allocates its dynamic range along its iso range. Especially since it might seem counter intuitive sometimes. E.g. as you said actually raising your iso in bright environments. However this is only true, if exposure is adjusted correctly and can‘t be done in post. Having exposed for iso 800 while shooting will not change in post even if you push for 2000.

The best thing about the PYXIS: 1. Adding a monitor but conveniently forget the hinge to be able to flip out and twist the screen. 2. Gently asking $500 more for the same sensor with all the glory, warts and all. 3. Nicely rub salt on the wounds and nudging us to buy actual usable monitor.
