Personally, out of both of these cameras, I would go with the Blackmagic due purely to the image. I am willing to sacrifice practicality for a better end result, and since I don't use autofocus, there is no need to spend extra money on the Sony. My main camera is actually the Lumix S5, it has amazing picture quality for the price and paired with my Ninja V it records 5.9k pro res raw at up to 30 fps, I picked it up on eBay for £600 and with prime lenses, a cine rig and a gimbal, I have got a full setup ready for production for under £3500. I'm still relatively new to filmmaking, I have only done 6 professional with this camera (I rented gear for the few shoots I had done previously), and I am shooting a short film with it, but from my experience with it, I think it is such a steal for what you are getting.
@@baileythefilmmaker Wow that is really a steal! Lumix used to be my ride or die for many years with the GH5, GH5s, S1H, and BGH1. I always loved the picture quality as well as the workflow. To be honest - I mostly transitioned over because we do a lot of subcontract work and Sony is much more prominent in the circles we run in, so it allowed us to rent out our equipment more often which has been nice. I feel like as soon as I sold my Lumix kit, they came out with the S5ii and S5iix which I've been yearning to try lol. Still much love from Lumix over here ❤
Works with all lenses. Just make sure to turn off lens stabilization if the lens has that and remember to calibrate the gyro in the camera menu whenever you change lenses. @@Sebastian-jf5cp
I've never handled BMPCC6K, but the 4K version has SSD support. I've used $30 cage adapter with 2 TB Kioxia drive, and it was cheaper, faster, more reliable and easier to handle, then anything I've used before.
Yup! They all do. I used the USB-C out in this video to record to a CFAST 2.0 (instead of an SSD), just to show that CFAST 2.0 is fast enough to record BRAW 3:1 Opengate ☺️☺️ When I work with BMD we usually record to SSDs because it’s just easier
@@krisangelo727 he is coping for a fact that BMPCC6K lost to FX3 so much, trying to defend it vs FX3. Which is not needed - to each it's own, and 6K costs so much less, that it's not even a contest, especially with it's features. And - no, Blackmagic is for anyone who needs it. I used BMPCC4K for 2 years in RU-vid nerd stuff, and was absolutely happy with it. Changed only when my skill level started to require gimbal and AF. And I almost switched to Sony.
I get you're coming from a "RU-vid" background approach, but you can't really compare the noise considering the FX3 noise is being filtered digitally in camera, while with the BRAW, you're literally shooting RAW footage, which means there's no denoise being applied. I see "creators" making this error over and over when comparing these cameras. You need to shoot RAW with both cameras and then compare them.
I understand your perspective. But a lot of my work is in live streaming and broadcast - meaning that low noise in camera, whether it’s a processed or not, is hugely important to me. It’s very common that I get messages explaining to me how the Blackmagic workflow is SUPPOSED to work. And look I get it. But what I think a lot of people commenting don’t understand is that there’s a many more ways to shoot video that on a traditional set with a film crew and standard post-production workflow.
@@JohnCastillo There's Blackmagic cameras geared towards broadcast which achieve better results. That being said, you did a great job and it's a nice comparison. Overall the "Cinema" camera will outshine the FX3 in most controlled environment scenarios, while the Sony is a much versatile camera that will work for the majority of situations you throw at it. I shoot live events with the Blackmagic, but I do know I'm one of the few lunatics doing so. Anyways, just wanted to tell people that while the noise might look worse, it's sort of the way it's supposed to be. You're supposed to put in the work in the post production phase, much like many other cinema cameras.
This isn't apples to apples bro. The BMCC 6k FF is a cinema camera for pros. The FX3 is a dressed up hybrid snapper for anyone albeit excellent quality.
Great video, thanks for the comparison! 😊 I shoot on a bmccp 6k pro, and I LOVE the quality and color science, but it is becoming more and more inconvenient on rushed shoots, like music videos. At this point I am waiting for the next round of either bmccp cams - to get better with their autofocus, camera shape (it is pain to balance it on any gimbals with a heavy lens) and card formats / or either for Sony to roll out a newer version on fx3 that is worth the upgrade
Thanks for sharing Esthy! The 6K pro is also awesome for this ND filters! We run into the same problem with rushed shoots as well as mid-budget shoots, where time is of the essence! I’d be very curious to see an FX3 mark II. It’s 3 years old at this point so it’s certainly not out of the question
I totally agree about the camera body design, I sold my Pocket 6k pro for that only reason. But the lack of autofocus never bothered me, I got used to rack focus during all this years. I bought a FX3 + FX6, and I can tell you one thing...I miss my Blackmagic so much 😅 The simplicity of the menu, the colors, the details, texture, highlight rolloff, the organic feel, the big screen..Damn I really miss it...I think I'm going to sell my FX6 and buy a Pocket 6k FF and keep my FX3 for gimbal shots (for quick run'n gun projects). I used so many cameras including Arri & Red, and my Pocket 6k pro was the only cheap camera that can be compared to Arri in term of image quality. It's like a cheap mini Arri (but with a really weird shape 😅) And btw I also used the Pocket 6K pro for run"n gun projects, the only downside was the large shape that's really hard to balance on my Dji RS2. Otherwise, I was as fast as I am right now with the FX6 or FX3 😉(because I don't use gimbals that much)
@@JeanSebastienLEGER I totally get those specific reasons as well! I was truly surprised with how great the colours were out of the BMDFF compared to the FX3. RIght out of the box they are much more pleasing, with little effort. Any effort is spent on giving it a style and not on getting the colours where I'd like them to be lol. I feel like the Sony's do this weird thing where it desaturates skin tones which is super annoying, and I alwlays have to bring them back. Well, NAB is in a little less than a month! Perhaps it might be worth it to wait and see if BMD has anything interesting in store...

To have the fx3 for run and gunning and then the big bmccp 6k pro for cinematic projects where you have more time and recourses. That's what I would do as well if I could afford it :) But hopefully soon! And agreed, my next pick after my camera would be the Arri Alexa Mini - I dont think anything under that compares. well if you're ever in LA hmu and we'll work on something together!
Good video, I actually need something similar to both and might just go for getting both of these. I'm sure the Blackmagic is good with lens and mounts as well.

The BMCC 6K was on sale today for $1400 on Ebay, and I was tempted, but as a one-man-band, I just cant do no-autofocus. I wish they would include ANY type of auto continuous focus, specially since the screen doesn't tilt. Im selling my BM rig for the Fx3. I thought I wanted to make short films but turns out I need to make money. The BM is amazing if you add a big battery but the form factor and AF in Sony will be better for me. I bought 2 idx vmounts and they run it for 12 hours without turning the camera off. One of the biggest points I don’t think you touched on is that braw is so easy to edit. You can basically screw up all your settings and bring it back in da Vinci.
The FX3 has no crop in 1080p. Because the BMCC6K is “raw”, anything other than its native sensor size will crop into the sensor. So the FX3 has better 1080p.
If the camera is set to 6K it will not be cropped, but if it is set to 1080p the HDMI output will be cropped. It is essentially downscaling whatever you set the camera to internally to 1080p. Any resolution selected will be cropped into the sensor because of BMD RAW.
I was planning to buy the FX3 because of the travels, but the quality of the BMCC image wins above all the other cons of this camera. I'm also considering the Lumix s5iix, because it's probably closest to BMCC colors
You know, I used to be a BIG Lumix shooter - my whole friend group used to laugh at me because I’d talk about Lumix so much. One day, I sold my whole kit (I’ve got a whole video on that!), and soon after they released the S5iix and I was so upset!! Lol. Seems like a beast of a cam, but I haven’t had the chance to use it.
I’m an idiot, so Sony for me. Sony's monitor and control App is a killer feature for solo shooters like me. Add to that the small form factor and it’s a buy. Can’t wait for Mark ii, whenever that happens.
The FX3 is a very cool camera and has a nice image… but it still looks very 8-bit. Whereas Blackmagic, like you mentioned, really does have that “digital film” depth to it.
I agree wholeheartedly. I also find it much easier to work with right out of the box. Particularly the skin tones seem to sit in a healthier place as a jumping off point, which makes everything much easier.
I use Blackmagic as I prefer the image out of it however I would love to invest in an fx3 for autofocus and ibis. It would be a great travel cam and run and gun cam for easy shoots. The only downside is it just lacks so many important features. The fact it has no shutter angle and has no version of synchro scan instantly blows it for me.
Honestly the shutter angle thing I’ve sort of just gotten used to - but you are SPOT ON about the synchro scan. As someone who comes from Lumix that was a killer feature that the FX3 does not have. In fact, even the FX30s have some sort of de-flickering!
I can't speak for the 7cr because I have never used it - but I do own FX30s as well for when we do multicam shoots, and honestly - it depends on what you do. The clear area for me where the FX3 outperforms the FX30s is in low light. THE FX30s are signifcantly noisier in unideal lighting scenarios. However - we will often choose the FX30 over FX3 if we're doing multicam workflow and working with telephoto lenses because of the extra reach. If you do a lot of controlled lighting stuff, bringing in your own lights - I think the FX30s are absolutely great - and if you want that bokeh you can get amazing results with prime lenses. The FX30s also have some anti-flicker stuuff that i've used that the FX3 doesn't. Perhaps with a firmware update, but I've read horrible things about updaing the firmware on the FX3 so I've just let be 😅
People use cinema camera for different needs ☺️ I use mine largely for corporate work, concert capture, behind the scenes, and RU-vid. The ability to tackle different production needs with a cinema camera, for my needs, is a huge benefit 👍
