I was literally just looking for some high quality images of this panel so I could see what hardware functionality it has on it (because the documentation is surprisingly lacking on the website). Thanks for the great video!

What I really live about this panel, it’s the ability to change the buttons to whatever position I want. Sometimes we can’t use the inputs in the right order, and the panel allows you to movem them around and put them back in order 😊

Thank you for this thorough walkthrough of the features! I'm still torn between the "10 buttons" model or the "20", pricing aside, the smaller model seems way easier to carry around in a case, and to pair perfectly with a Mini Extreme. We only have an Extreme ISO and a TVS HD for now, but I intend to somewhat replace (or complement) them with a Contellation HD, 2 M/E at minimum, or the 4 M/E which seems cool (for MADI) but is still unavailable. I guess I'll just wait until autumn to decide and continue to cobble things together for shows in the meantime. :D 10/10 will watch again :p

About to pull the trigger. Want something that makes switching my 2 m/e easier. At the moment I have 8 channels connected, however I’m feeling pretty confident that 90% of my gigs will not pass 10, and if the case I can put the key channels on channel 19 and 20 which would mean I have growth

Thanks for the overview Doug. I am going to be working on a 4Me Panel in a couple of months so this was a valuable insight in to the switcher/panel capabilities. I notice though if i do create a effect say a small DVE box with Color Border over.moving background and need to be able to recall it quickly that can only be done by going thru the macro recording/ building process. There isn't any way of taking a "snapshot" of the ME as with a Sony / Grass or any other "conventional" switcher. I assume the price point drives the software but is it that much more to add? Seems that would be a added feature many TD's would use.
@djp_video

The Macro feature is really the only way to accomplish this with the Blackmagic switcher/control panels.

Hi there, awesome video. Is it possible to enable the greyed out KEY 3 and KEY 4? What happened if we want to use more than 2 Transition Key? Thanks.

You can't without getting a new switcher. The hardware to perform the two additional layers of keying doesn't exist in the model of switcher you have.

Hey Doug quick questions! Is it possible to create a macro that begins playing a video from a hyperdeck connected to the ATEM and make it the program out? If so could that macro also toggle off any upstream keys or downstream keys. Could a macro utilities a stinger transition along with dsk or usk? I'd want to toggle off a scoreboard dsk, transition with our instant replay transition then put up a sponsor with a dsk over the instant replay. Also what would you recommend for an instant replay system? I've seen vMix can be good, especially if combined with a decent control surface. Thank you, your videos are amazing!
@djp_video
@djp_video Год назад
The macro feature built into the ATEM switchers would be able to handle all of that. I use vMix for replay. My latest video shows how I pull that off.

Not that I know of. I believe you have to use ATEM Software Control to initiate recording of all cameras on a compatible ATEM switcher.

Can you make Animated super sources on the macros?
@djp_video
@djp_video Год назад
Kind of. But only between pre-selected layouts. You could create a macro to go from layout A to layout B, for example, but if you're on layout B and haven't created a layout to go from B back to A you won't be able to make that transition. That's essentially why I created my own SuperSource animation code.

The "change state" logic of the Preview bus combined with the bus-swapping function of the T-bar makes it hazardous to use the Preview bus for those who don't have a background in broadcast television production. After you make an AUTO/CUT or T-bar transition, the Preview bus is now showing you what was previously displayed on the Program bus, BEFORE the transition was initiated. The problem is that's a counter-intuitive starting point for stage lighting designers, who base each consecutive lighting cue on the CURRENT lighting state, not on the PREVIOUS state. The fact that the BKGD, KEY 1, and TIE button states don't indicate which sources are currently displayed on the Preview bus (but instead, which sources will be reversed after the next transition) makes it even more confusing. What I just described is how an ATEM switcher works in "Program Preview" Switching Mode (selected in the ATEM Setup app, not in ATEM Software Control). In this mode, pressing the numbered source buttons on the ATEM switcher will route that source to the Preview bus (indicated in green), after which you can press the CUT or AUTO buttons to trigger a Program bus transition (green and red indicators swap sources). However, ATEM Mini's default to "Cut Bus" Switching Mode, in which pressing a numbered source button cuts directly to that source on the Program bus, without use of the CUT or AUTO buttons. In that mode, the Preview bus is bypassed (no source buttons ever turn green) and USK/DSK buses are activated on the Program bus directly with their ON AIR buttons. The problem I have with the Advanced Panel (and the ATEM Software Control app as well) is that instead of conforming to the currently selected Cut Bus or Program Preview mode, it tries to finesse the difference, implementing BOTH switching modes at the same time. If you press a source button on the upper Program row, it will turn red and immediately switch the Program bus to that source, as in Cut Bus mode. If you instead press a source button on the lower Preview row, it will turn green and immediately switch the Preview bus to that source, as in Program Preview mode. The problem with that is that pressing a Program bus button may also change the Preview bus display (because you will now transition from a new starting source). The upshot is that in order to use the green Preview bus consistently, you should avoid pressing any of the red Program bus buttons. Likewise, if you want to stick with Cut Bus mode, you should avoid using the green Preview bus buttons. While this may be second nature to broadcast television veterans, it's a persistent source of confusion for newcomers. None of this is explained in detail in BMD's manuals and I'm not sure if I spelled out all the details correctly myself.

The challenge with something like the Advanced Panel where you have hardware designed around Preview/Program with a switcher set to Cut Bus mode is that with Cut Bus mode there is only one bus -- so what do you do with the second row of buttons designed to be used for a second bus? I don't really understand the confusion of Preview/Program mode... you have whatever is currently on air (Program), and what's going to be on air next (Preview). After a transition it does put what was on Program into Preview, but you can really entirely ignore that in terms of running the switcher -- just always select what you want next (whether it's already selected or not) on the Preview and then push the transition button. There are a lot of downsides to Cut Bus mode though. You can't do a fade on/off of an Upstream Key, for example. Using Cut Bus mode limits what the hardware is capable of doing, and I don't believe actually simplifies things much for new users. Understanding Preview/Program isn't hard. The only thing that gets tricky is the way Upstream Keys are handled. And that's actually significantly more confusing in Cut Bus mode.
@FallenStarFeatures
@FallenStarFeatures 5 месяцев назад
@@djp_video - If the Advanced Panel and ATEM Software Control actually had a Cut Bus mode that mirrored the Switching Mode setting in the setup app, you could then assign the Preview bus to the Aux output and use it like a second Cut Bus. You can actually do that now, but the way the BKGD, KEY 1, and TIE buttons always work in Program Preview mode make it confusing. Most newcomers are unfamiliar with the T-bar, as they're used to the ATEM Mini which comes out of the box in Cut Bus mode. The ATEM Software Control app is clunky and confusing to them, as it's modelled on the Advanced Panel and Pro switchers, and doesn't work like the ATEM Mini's they're used to.
@djp_video

I'm having a difficult time understanding why someone would want to run in Cut Bus mode with a control panel. You're quite literally limiting the capability of the hardware you've paid a lot of money for, and setting yourself up to make mistakes. Learning Preview/Program isn't hard and gives you a lot more flexibility, not the least of which is giving yourself a chance to catch mistakes before they go live, because everything shows up in your Preview window first. With Cut Bus mode, when you press a source button you're seeing the effect of it at the same time as everyone else with no chance to catch an error. Not to mention that keying gets a lot harder and loses some of its capabilities. And even in Preview/Program mode you can still cut live like Cut Bus, you just do it on the Program bus rather than the Preview buttons. By trying to use Cut Bus mode with it, you're trying to force the Advanced Panel to work in a way it wasn't intended. The way the buttons, screens, and everything about the panel was literally laid out and designed around Preview/Program. It's sort of like complaining that your car doesn't act like a boat if you drive it into a river. Square peg into round hole, and all of those other "it doesn't fit" analogies. I will admit that the way that the USK buttons function is confusing, but it's way more confusing in Cut Bus mode than Preview/Program.

@@djp_video - I agree, it's more reliable to use Program Preview mode, especially when you have just one PGM output where all keys are composited. But we sometimes have both projector and livestream outputs, which aren't always the same, and wind up using the AUX output as a second CUT-only switcher, with the same video sources feeding both PGM and AUX outputs. So we wind up dealing with Cut Bus mode on the AUX output, regardless of how we manage the PGM output. Of course, the right way to handle this problem is to upgrade to a dual-PGM switcher, but with the gear we have on hand, it's often tempting to construct a scene on the Preview bus, and then cut it directly into the AUX output, leaving the PGM output unchanged. (To do this safely, you can engage the PREV TRANS button to isolate the PGM output from Preview bus manipulations.) This works fine for brief stingers, since you can seamlessly switch back to the original AUX source after the stinger's done, freeing up the Preview bus for the next PGM transition. The catch is you have to anticipate how to second-guess the BKGD, KEY 1, and TIE keys, since they aren't simply ON AIR switches for the Preview bus. I actually use a custom ATEM MIDI controller to do this, since as you point out, it'd be confusing to try to force an Advanced Panel or on-screen ATEM Software Control app to work this way.

Interfacing with a Clear-Com system will require a 4-wire adapter. Then that line-level audio would need to be converted to AES/EBU using either the Behringer SRC2496 or something similar (I use Dante via Audinate AVIO AES adapters myself).

What would you say is the best way to control your Constellation 2M/E? Going to buy one for our first rack and are still looking for a way to control it.
@djp_video
@djp_video 2 года назад
That really depends on your needs. The Advanced Panels work well, but they don't do everything that a Stream Deck with Companion or an X-Keys Controller with Central Control or JustMacros. On the other hand, they offer higher quality dedicated buttons for the features that they do have.

@@djp_video We're about to switch from a vMix based production to our first rack. So we're looking for something to control multiple devices and sync videoplay out from vMix to Atem Inputs etc. Is there any product you know of that would find kind of into that category?
@mikkowilson2
@mikkowilson2 2 года назад
@@johannespedri9123 Look into Skaarhoj controllers. They are a bit pricey at first glance, but they can control tones of gear, and all at the same time. They come with stock configurations for lots of devices out of the box, but you an customize literally every control and display on the panel to control pretty much any featured on any supported product; even multiple at the same time. They can totally do vMix and Atem at the same time on the same panel (or button even), or you can use their virtual triggers to do fancy stuff like auto-rolling clips from vMix when certain sources get on-air tally on the Atem. The imagination really is the limit, but they have great documentation and support to help you get the gear configured how you like it too.

The Advanced Panel is just a controller -- a remote for a rack-mounted ATEM switcher. It doesn't actually process any video at all. As such, they two are entirely different products.
