Blackmagic Micro Studio 4K G2 on a 4 inch Cinewhoop - HaloRC Kali

Today I was testing some new products I have been working on for the BM Studio G2. When you add an SSD, power and a lens to this little camera, the weight ends up the same as my range of naked BMPCC's. This means that the frames and setups I have been perfecting for the naked cameras are ideally suited to develop the best setup for carrying the new BM Studio G2.
I'm developing a mount for carrying a range of different cameras from GoPros, up to 500-600g (like this camera), that can be fitted to any frame with naked camera mounting points like my HaloRC Kali and Horus. 0-40 degree adjustable angle with space behind for carrying up to 2 x 2200mah lipos.
Specifically for this camera I'm still developing the battery bay secured SSD drive mount and power distribution. I like the solution featured in this video but I want to try a couple of other things before I decide on what I will be offering.

I want to see the latency between the G2 footage and the navigation camera that you're using to fly. I insist that it should be possible to use that G2's SDI feed for navigation. Keep up the good work btw. It looks outstanding.

You could use the sdi output to fly with if you had to but it would require a transmission system like DJI Transmission. You couldn't use the goggles and literally nobody would or should do this because it is untested and not designed for doing this, No gain from doing this neither when we have such good fpv systems.

Blackmagic have sample footage on their website. This 300g studio camera won't compare to an Arri, but check out the Blackmagic 6K Full Frame, it's amazing what they have given us for £2k.

Great setup, How do you control the camera? How do you see what the camera captures from the ground?

Thanks man, this setup doesn't provide a live view of what the G2 sees, I'm only seeing what the drone see in my FPV goggles. There are devices like the new DJI SDT Transmission that can be used to transmit the live video. One thing i see in movies that use drones for establishing shots is they always do a sharp cut the the next shot as the camera never slowls down. Can you show an example of the camera whoop slowing down to a stop while keeping the horizon locked, or near locked?

Can't find an example where I do that but sometimes I fly up to things and just hover on the spot for a few seconds before flying off.

@@Bludz @2:20 in this video where the camera goes from the side of the futbol pitch to over the tree tops is the kind of shot that would be used in a movie, especially if there was a castle or something behind the trees. I wonder if you could slow down and stop once you clear the trees and keep the shot looking smooth. Thanks for your reply.

I see what you mean. Yea, I could stop and hold at any point. Position holding is quite hard to do unless you set the drone up to do that, mine is not so I would manually hold position. You can build them to use GPS and hold position like a DJI drone, but not something I have done myself yet.

Nicely done! I've been thinking about building a smaller cinelifter to run this very camera when Blackmagic released it! Serves as a damned good entry level competitor to rigging full video cameras onboard, but wasn't expecting a 4" to handle it so well :) Is the footage straight out of camera..? Could look even better with a little colour correction :)

Hi. Well I don't think the quality will really compare but in terms of how well it flies on a drone it will be night and day. Komodo is a fat boi. Check the description for a link to the mount, battery bay will be coming soon, I've still got some testing to do over the next couple of weeks.

I wondered about it but really I think that will only add weight and no other benefit. What do you thin that would be good for? I was thinking about something similar but made out of carbon but after testing this I can confirm it doesn't need a cage to keep the camera secured to the drone well.

The gyro still has issues but I did a slightly better job with gyroflow this time and the mount works a lot better than the resin printed one I used last time. The result is definately better. As for the low light, I kind of think it was just me not exposing enough, I'll get out again when it is not full sunlight and see if I can get better results.

@@Bludzyou can definitely expose to the right and pull it down in post, especially because you’re shooting BRAW. so don’t be afraid of overexposure in low light, that camera sensor is too small to worry about that

Just saying that for such a bigger camera with a longer lens it is easier to break if you crash ...and costs alot more to replace than the go pro....as long as you don't take chances with flying crazy then ok...but I race with my quadcopter and have crashed into the other racers and have crashed into air gates ,trees,and the ground going quite fast...I have broken one of my go pro cameras and that put me out 399.00 dollars so like I said if you don't fly as crazy as my self racing then sure use what you got.😊😊😊

I just got my g2 aswell and i have one silly question. How do you playback the footage from the camera?

Not that silly really, I wondered the same thing. I'm pretty sure it cannot playback the footage, no mention of it in the manual. You will need to plug into a computer.

Thanks man. I do plan on releasing it along with the adjustable mount. The mount is available on the websiet now, but I have not finished the battery bay design yet, bit too bust at the mo but should be able to soon.

What is the Amper output of the 12V BEC, that you are using to power the camera?

3amps. I don't think it is a great option if you intend to use 22volts or more, they keep popping on me and it sends full voltage out the other end.

If you are happy with 4K then you could be right, although this Studio camera is a bit awkward to adjust the settings.

Thanks man, I really love how this setup can carry all that weight so well. T Motor F60 1950kv with Gemfan D45 props is the best combo I have found.

Again, awesome . . . I was thinking about getting this camera for this exact thing and got mine late last week after seeing you do this. Unfortunately I am having a bit of rolling shutter issue. I typically do 60fps with f125 (or f120) and it takes care of the problem. Your footage has none of that, would you mind sharing the camera settings you used? It would be a great help. Thanks!

Thanks dude. Sorry to hear you are having issues. F120? Do you mean shutter at 1/120? I use degrees not angle. 60fps at 1/120 I think is 180 degree shutter. I find this to produce to much motion blur on a drone, even a slow one. Usually I use 120 degrees on my slower cinewhoop and 90 degrees on my faster drone as it creates plenty of motion blur with the fast movement. Are you running your footage through Gyroflow? My footage has been and it has rolling shutter correction built in, so I never notice it.

Ahh that might be it, thanks. I will change to angle and try that. It def has some motion blur. I’m doing 5:1, and yep I meant 1/120. Will try yours and let you know. By the way, any idea when your mount might be out? It could also be my mount without enough dampening.

Btw, I did run it thru GF but the rolling shutter was so bad it didn’t remove it. Also I’m starting to get flashing footage even though I’m using a recommended drive. Anyhow…thanks again though!

I think so yea, hardmounting can lead to issues with the gyro data and with naked cameras the card can disconnect itself.

If by doing the same job you mean fly around a boring field for footage to put on RU-vid then yea, a GoPro would be fine. This camera and setup will be used by people who are much better at using them than me. People who shoot professionally can't always use GoPro because in the world of TV and film, GoPro footage is a joke. I know that a lot of the time my own footage isn't much better, but by someone who is better at using it than me it always will look better.

the bmmsc is leaps and bounds ahead of a go pro in terms of picture quality and dynamic range. This test footage isnt the best example of it (fairly harsh lighting conditions and a bit overexposed with youtube compression on top of it). Also good luck convincing any director that your gopro footage will look great next to their RED/ARRI footage when this camera shoots in BRAW with a ton of flexibility and can easily pump out an image that can be graded back to back witih RED footage. For less then twice the price as a gopro and less then double the weight, this thing is a game changer for the cinematic FPV world imo. Hyped to see some more info on these plates/mounting system for the bmmsc and will for sure snag up a Kali to build up once you offer up a kit with the new plate @bludz!
