It is simple: all camera's like black magic sony canon etc etc are super and stunning and really great for all kinds of purposes. Until you compare them with ARRI.
Very hard to see difference in quality on youtube. Other than skintones (which can be fixed) i think they both handle it pretty good. But a bit sad you didn't go for Raw in this test.
Vexed Films I know amazing little device that's why we did the video ! we found the BMPCC superior to the 2.5K and 4K (which we used to own ...) when you put the price factor in consideration we also have some URSAs , Sony etc we are a rental house in Montreal, qc, canada
Oh right, makes sense to have some cameras to rent then. We are getting a BMPCC as an upgrade to dslrs. Yeah the price is amazing. Could have one for each lens...
in the new Avengers movie they used the Blackmagic Pocket as crashcam and stuntcam and the DP said it was easy to match with the Alexas , maybe they saw my little youtube movie first !
Thank you, a very good and professionally performed test! We use both the BMPCC, BMCC, BMPC 4K and for cinema advertising sometimes the ARRI Alexa. Although this is a good test, we must also criticize it. If we look at the pictures with the woman, the sharpness at the BMPCC does not seem to be 100% correct and in return the sharpness of the ARRI Alexa at the Siemenstern does not seem to be right. Do we see that wrong? Maybe it was created by the compilation on RU-vid? Anyway, thank you again and of course the Pocket is an incredibly good camera - with all its little problems - because if you consider how much quality in the picture, how much cinematic quality you get for less than 1000 €, then "she" is the winner! Alexa seems lower contrasted one the C definition range chart (left back) @4:10... But still much more clear in general : so less definition but more clarity ! Means it's optimized for mid E definition range (E on the chart), not for extreme sharpness rendering where contrast sudenly fails. Alexa follows a sharpness/contrast ratio formula u might not find in a consumer grade product.
It'd be awesome if you can make a comparison of BMPCC RAW 12-bit 4:2:2 vs Arri Alexa 12-bit 4:4:4 prores. BMPCC in prores is 10-bit 4:2:2 so it's lacking a lot in dynamic range. Plus Alexa is 2k and resolves in 1080p hence why bmpcc looks a little softer. On top of that use a 'Captain Hook' lut for the BMPCC...that would definitely be interesting :)
+jftvrwk on a chart yes , on live action with 2 cameras shooting at the same time ... not really unless you know some magic :) plus with the same lens the ratio would be all wrong Alexa beeing a Super35 sensor and Pocket super16
Gotcha. However, now i'm looking at skintones and not exactly sure how much different the lenses are, so i cant really make a judgement on how the sensors differently interpret those colors.
Problem is, if BM camera were in perfect focus, you would see the weird sharpening artifacts that the absent OLPF creates - it is not kind to skin. Alexa has an amazing OLPF that is very loving to skin. In motion, BM camera also has way more skew.
