Blackmagic URSA 12k/ RAWLITE vs. LucAdapters Magic Booster 12K

I just got the URSA 12K RAWLITE filter and decided to put it up against the LucAdapters Magic Booster 12k which has lived in my camera for the past 2 years. I used the Blackmagic Extended Video LUT to give each filter the fairest comparison before grading the image later on in the video. Shot in 12K and exported in 4K.

This has been one of the most helpful video for me on this camera. I currently have the rawlight. But I really love the full frame look to match with my sigma fp.

This was really helpful, actually. The potential for full-frame on my 12K has been nagging at me since I learned about the Lucadapters but that flaring is unacceptable, so I'm finally at peace. If they sort it out, I'd definitely give it another look!

I'm glad it was of use. I basically made the video for my past self since no one really had any real world experience with it...just little comments here and there. That said, it's an amazing piece of gear and for many that flare won't be an issue. Most of the time it isn't. I just shoot a lot of interviews and the flare was causing issues with setup time which is always something we never have enough of.

@@IanMorrisVideo yeah, no, total dealbreaker. Anyway, I actually didn't do my proper mathematics when considering the sensor size, which is actually larger than Super 35 and has only a 1.3x crop, so pretty workable with full frame glass.
@IanMorrisVideo
@IanMorrisVideo Год назад
@@alexstory3756 totally..and the funny thing is with the LucAdapters you're even wider than standard full frame so some of my zooms like the Sigma 70-200 vignette.
@G_handle

Wait, I'm confused. Isn't 1.0:1 full frame. So 1.3:1 wouldn't be wider than FF? Roughly 1.5:1 I thought was "Super-35"/APS-C. And Micro-4/3 being about 2.0:1. A) is something different happening with these adapters vs different sensor sizes? B) why would a Full-frame 70-200 lense be vignetting on a less than full-frame sensor (or adapter sensor combo)? I must be missing something.

Hello Ian, The flaring of the magic booster create some huge reflection in direct sunlight, I don't know if you experienced it but it get seriously nasty. Had hard time getting a refund, but beware, this adapter cannot be used on backlit situations and they can't fit lenses with a back element like Leica R that get a little bit out of the mount. Rawlite is solid and reliable. Thanks for this video.

Yes, I've experienced flare from all directions when there's a source in front of the camera. I hope they fix it.

Extremely helpful! Thanks to LucAdapter who didn't reply to my previous questions, I may wait for another solution. I'm afraid it would highly impact the time of 3 lights setup for interviews... Anyone knows if the adapter would do the same flare effect in the Bmpcc6K ?

Have you tried it with a proper Matte Box? I guess the lateral flares would be similar anyways but it might help with vertical ones.

Want to get the LucAdapter for Ursa Broadcast G2, but I am a little concerned about how this will affect lens data when doing gyro stabilization. Using a metabones speed booster on my P4K, the data automatically gets converted, but I didn’t see anything on their website that might give any information about it.

Questions: I have an OG URSA 12K (and multiple 6K Pros) and was planning to do the lucadapter mod soon. This flare issue I've only heard referenced in your video, so thanks for calling attention to it. A) Is the flare happening at the Front of the lense, or something unique at the back, genuinely caused by the adapter. B) is it possible that if you put that exact lense in the exact lighting setup, on a true full-frame sensor camera (say a dslr or mirrorless), that you'd get the same flaring? In other words, is that flaring happening Optically, and only being 'cropped out' by the crop-factor of the smaller sensors only sensing the center of the image circle at the back of the lense? I hope that makes sense. And I hope that is the case. C) If that is the case, do you get the same flares on the Crop sensor/non-speed boost if you pop on a wider lense, or zoom out to match focal lengths? D) You mentioned having to control the light. Are you doing so with Flags and Matte Boxes? Have you always been able to control it? And have you experimented with polarizers? E) I know this flare issue was your deal-breaker, but if it were controllable, do you still prefer the Image from the raw-light?

Great video- does your mattebox block the flares any ? I agree while it has a place and is "cool" it can be a deal breaker for scenarios that do not call for it.

Lucatapters have a MK II version for sale on their website. Do you know if the version you used in these tests is the MK 1 or MK 2? Hoping they've fixed the flaring issue. Thanks

Thanks for doing this comparison! Seems like the perfect solution would be a Rawlite olpf speedbooster 😂 How difficult is it to remove or put in the Luc Adapter? Is it more like a permanent fixture?
@IanMorrisVideo
@IanMorrisVideo Год назад
I know right. Takes 2 minutes to install the magic booster. Remove the original glass filter with 3 screws, put on an extra shim, insert the adapter. That's it.

Nope not at all. In fact, when you install they recommend that you have the ND engaged so you don't get dust on your sensor when removing the default filter.

@@Shauny_D it probably goes beyond to be honest. A fault of the focal reducers is that it extends your close focus by almost a foot and throws the lenses way past infinity.

@IanMorrisVideo

You can't do that unfortunately since the whole filter needs to be removed where the rawlite would go to make room for the focal reducer glass. The Magic Booster has the IR filter after the glass elements.
