Yeah, the progression from Humphrey lecturing Bernard in the first few seasons to Bernard quipping to put Humphrey down in the last season is delicious. Finally getting his own back on the mam who used to almost enjoy mocking him.

So lovely to see Bernard basking in the limelight for once, instead of just his droll one-liners, delightful as they were. The greatest show ever made. So thankful to my dad recording these on VHS even before I was born and then introducing it to me when I was growing up in the Middle East. Timeless.

One of the things this show demonstrated was that characters such as Sir Humphrey and, to a lesser extent, Bernard tended to be considerably smarter in the confines of Government buildings than the Minister/Prime Minister Jim Hacker, but as soon as they were in front of the cameras, radio or in conversation with the public, they quickly got out of their depth and needed saving themselves, often by Hacker...

Sir Humphrey Appleby could talk circles around Minister/Prime Minister James Hacker. Sir Nigel Hawthorne was one of the great British actors of the 20th century. I loved his acting performances.

Many shows struggle with giving good final episodes to say farewell, but I'd say YPM did well for itself, giving Hacker and Bernard one final win against Humphrey 😊

Agreed. Winning in the final episode and in such a spectacular way too, was the perfect ending. And not only did they win, it’s still one of funniest episodes of them all, to boot.

He (Sir Humphrey) has a razor sharp mind and tongue. He would have been a great dialog coach for the British actors, who may not be eloquent in real life, umming and aahing, and you knowing in their interviews. 🤭🤭🤭

The irony of Sir Humphrey Appleby blasting people who live on unemployment/housing benefit, yet his own salary/expenses is also paid for by the public as he is a civil servant. Sir Humphrey's salary actually cost the tax payers more per year than around 100 umemployment claimants back then. Irony.

This is why - so far - I have rejected any invitation to conduct an interview, Facebook Live or TikTok session as a govt policy adviser. Even when my manager thinks it will probably be harmless (as long as I stick to the predefined script). To me, written interviews are much more safe and convenient to do because I can blue-pencil the answers haha xD

Having just finished the complete Yes Minister/Yes, Prime Minister I wonder whether the unfortunate interview with Ludovic Kennedy got into the hands if Iain Dincan-Smith. Sir Humphrey gaves us... Forty years in advance.... Universal Credit and sanctions. Lynn and Jay were wonderful scriptwriters

What sir Humphrey says is absolutely correct. There are lots of people who live on subsidies, although they are young and able but they spend most of their time refusing job offers.

@@HPRamStatistics can demonstrate this. If youre asking him to provide statistics off the cuff, then you are clearly not approaching the topic with honesty as it is impossible to source this without hours of meaningful research. What he is describing is whats known as a political statement, based on general notions in the aether rather than sourced directly from a study. It is demonstrably true, but whether it is true or not is not reflective upon the principle of whether unemployment benefits are justified.

The US requires accepting job offers, although they have to be appropriate, but over time one is supposed to be flexible. Depends on the State of course. And there s certainly is abuse of the system.

I hate Yes PM becoz how much they nerfed sir Humphrey complete contrast to shrewed and manipulative Humphrey in Yes M. I did enjoy certain moments in Yes M when he got outplayed by Hacker but making him complete fool in YPM was really bad character progression from writers part. They should have molded him into another Sir Arnold in YPM.
