Can we have a monthly Blackman Beyond special where Mark interviews a writer like this. Whether it be a top tier or a up and coming writer gaining steam because that would be amazing. Mark just knows all the right questions to ask.

This is one of those interview that give you a new level of understanding and appreciation of an artist. Explains so much about Watchmen AND Leftovers. Thanks, Marc and Damon.

Thoroughly interesting interview. I'm in the UK and can't see Watchmen due to not having the right TV packages. Hope it'll get a Blu-ray release or moved to Netflix over here. Every question and answer has just made me want to see this even more than before.

I'm a bit confused as to why a certain thing had to happen in the finale given that the plan was known at least 10 years before it happened, why not take every member out? Unless the rule in this universe is foreknowledge of events cements reality as a fixed point. But god damn this was something really special.

To be slightly fair to Emma Stone and that movie (Aloha), that character is meant to be someone who does Not look like her diverse ethnic background, she is based on a real person who does not look like her diverse ethnic background, who is part-Polynesian and part-Chinese and part-White (Swedish), but you can really only see the Swedish redhead. There is a similar thing for Iron Fist and Danny Rand, Danny Rand is meant to be an outsider, to have him played by a Chinese or Indian/Nepalese/Tibetan (that city is up there) person takes away a lot of the interesting parts of that story, and in fact turns it into a stereotypical caricature of an amazing Asian martial artist. Bruce Lee movies were awesome, but mostly not because of the writing or story. Also, Marvel already has that character, he is buddies with Danny, his name is Shang-Chi, he is the Master of Kung Fu and his story is fully of stereotypical depictions of Asians that date to the '30s with all the cultural sensitivity you would associate with that. The movie will be awesome, because I love it regardless, but there is a strong argument that making Danny Asian because it should be a story about Asian people because it is a story about martial arts (which are not unique to any specific ethnic group on the bloody planet) is racist itself. Danny also kind of sucks by himself, his sense of humour is kinda flat and he does not have great supporting characters (he tends to have one decent one, his current girlfriend, at a time), and really needs to be with Luke, and he plays a useful role there as a white person looking in on Luke's world as an ignorant white guy looking in at the world of African-Americans. You could have him be Asian and part of that still works, but the view point from white privilege doesn't work so much. Anyways, point is that whitewashing is totally a thing, but there are exceptions where it is not whitewashing, but actually part of the story (and part of the reality that that story is based on) in important ways. Emma Stone and Aloha have gotten a disproportionate amount of flak for that, there are more legitimate targets, sadly Christian Bale, Dwayne Johnson, Tilda Swinton and most of the cast of Gods of Egypt for instance. Btw, I am also enjoying the spread of Black Excellence in film, which puts films I, I very white guy, would not otherwise see. Women in film seems to be getting better too, and Asians in film. Really looking forward to Shang-Chi, would only be happier if it was in a world where he got to cross-over with Danny and Luke (and Jessica and Matt, and hell Moony when that comes out).

Getting to see Watchmen, Mr. Robot and Rick & Morty all on the same night may actually be too much of a good thing.

Damon said "A show shouldn't need to have required reading, but... You know". That's one way I really get involved in a show. I love pausing the show for a moment to go explore more of the narrative. For me, a great TV experience is being able to get involved somehow xxx

I'm absolutely shocked, that I knew nothing about the Tulsa riots. Such a terrible event in American history glossed over and swept under the carpet as if it never happened.

This is ironically much closer to the original version of Fatman on Batman.

It's so crazy this guy wrote on Into Darkness and Prometheus...he seems to just be much much much better with TV shows.

Watchmen was the series that I sort of binge watch after I went to see Knives Out in theater. This series gave me the same vibe as Knives Out in terms of the setup and payoff. It felt so good to watch these two almost back to back. Because I wait until almost all Watchmen episode came out.

It usee to be that there was no downside to quitting my job at SAG and moving to Goa, but now there is: I wasn't in the audience for this interview. 🤣

I don't like how this show portrays black men. From the first episode on there are subtle innuendos that dont click with me, dude seems to be okay being emasculated constantly. Black men are more than sex objects or a nice body. Most men I know arent at home taking care of the little (white) kids either, especially with white cloths over they fucking face. Apparently most black men are also closet homosexuals, or at least this is the stuff I keep seeing in shows like this. This wouldn't even be a thought if it didn't happen so regularly in hollywood tv and films compared to real life. I see through the bullshit..

Just watched Treadstone and it was OK at best, just giving up halfway through the story is what passes as a cliffhanger I guess! The twists were obvious to anybody, but it wasn’t terrible to watch! Marc’s episode was decent enough

Such a mixed bag show for me...and the only way it works in my head is if I look at it the way anyone should look at anything with the Watchmen label not written by Alan Moore. Which is it’s all just fanfics, some more well financed than others. Some better written than others. It’s really smart and really bad at the same time to me. But it is what is, it won’t be celebrated in the long run. Not like the book was anyway.

Personally I completely disagree with his views on episodic television, for me I end up completely being taken out of the experience and interest for a show if I'm forced to wait to see the next episode, so shows that are that way I will wait until the season is finished, which is why I love Netflix dropping everything at once, I stay in the world of the characters the whole way through and it feels a lot more impactful for me.
