This is so interesting to me, because i'm from TN and my mom's family is from Brownsville, TN. But after doing ancestry, it appears that my grandmother's mother's lines were likely involved in the Gulf Coast trading. My maternal haplogroup is a Senegalese haplogroup and a number of my (4th-distant matches) are from LA/MS and it's one of my communities on Ancestry. I also have Arkansas and Choctaw, AL roots so originally I thought that's where all my matches came from but after an uncle did ancestry the matches are on both sides. But this makes a lot of sense now, although I don't know how to necessarily move forward because idk the connection right now.

I am a native of Mississippi and DNA matches have me deep in the mud as you called it in this video. I have multiple families that have last names that are commonly associated with the Lumbee communities in Southern NC (Pee Dee River area) and Northeast SC but former MS Territory counties are where they all converge.They are also in Southern LA. I am in mirror tree hell.

You know I feel your pain! I'm in a mud of Pattersons and Butlers in Amite and Pike Counties myself. Hoping we can get out of the mud soon!

Also remember there are over 400 Black Madonnas throughout Europe and most of them r in France. Black people were heavily involved in French society. Also the fleur-de-lis = Lily which was something the Ancient Egyptians cherished.

I just got my DNA results back, and I shared dna ancestry with early Virginia African American, southwest Mississippi & Northeast Louisiana African Americans. But my family is from Mississippi and Louisiana. I was born and raised in Chicago.

Sooooo many French places in the US. The English took over a lot of French colonies and America is one of them.

Is anyone researching Newton county, Mississippi? Or the surrounding counties? I am looking for a research partner (to share ideas with), especially because I noticed that many of the families in that county are connected. Thus far, I have found my ancestors going back to the 1880 census. Though I have found potential relatives in the 1870 census, I have not yet found my ancestors in 1870.

Questions: 1) Are there courses or tutorials you can recommend that teach the most effective and efficient ways to research slave ancestral history? 2) Are there good sources to research Choctaw slaves? [My great grandfather was Choctaw (born 1836 in what became MS ) married my great grandmother a slave from New Orleans (born 1841) in 1865. We have mostly oral history and a little research. We have no info on whether my great grandmother was a slave to Europeans or Choctaw, noting that eastern LA, including N.O. was in the Choctaw nation prior to the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek and Indian Removal Act. ]

18:46 so records from Natchez, Mississippi can be found in Louisiana? I just found out I’m related to abdul rahman ibrahima but I have no connection on how. Just DNA from others

Yep. Trade was heavy between Natchez and New Orleans along with cities along the Mississippi Delta.

Auctioning off black people seems harsh the way some people describe it but in the FREE North, Black people can be kicked out of their job for whatever reason and all of a sudden become destitute if they don't find another one. Work in the FREE North was definitely not guaranteed. Also putting your CV or going into interviews is sort of like auctioning yourself off.

What part of Africa did most slaves in Mississippi and Louisiana come from?
@whoisnickasmith
@whoisnickasmith 2 года назад
It truly depends on the region. Many of the enslaved who ended up in Louisiana and Mississippi were brought them from other southern states like Maryland, Virginia and North or South Carolina. There were also large operations that brought the enslaved from the Caribbean as well. Now, to figure out where folks came before that depends on the industry and availability of the enslaved in the places they were taken from.

@jaholo someone keeps deleting my comments. However some of our ancestors came from Cameroon look up Dr. Lisa Aubrey She a Louisiana native that did extensive research and discovered a unknown slave port called Bimbia in Cameroon. It is now a world heritage site. She also wrote a book called search for Bimbia that list all the ships that traveled from Bimbia to various islands then to New Orleans.
