I wanted to forge a few pokers for the new neighbors as a combination house warming/Christmas gift.
Over this past fall I was teaching at the ABANA Iron to art festival in PA and since it's an ABANA event there was a forging competition.. Bunch of fun.
Daniel Moss had one last February on making a candle holder, the ABS guys had one for all the group on forging a Bowie.
Here is my contribution.. Not exactly the fastest I could do it since I had to deal with several dead video camera batteries and a blooper or 2 and switching cameras around.. But, I came out with a respectable 30min or so start to finish.
ERules:
Cold metal start, bars cut to length if you would like.
If you do participate in the challenge it needs to be filmed in its entirety with start and stop times. No cuts in footage please..
This is supposed to be for fun and it doesn't matter as long as you have fun.. But with that, it can be interesting for sure.

I should have taken the time to wire them up.. Or picked out the new bar.. To lazy to walk out to the metal rack to get a new bar.. All worked out.. :)

I appreciated the 2 full twists fir the basket... I wondered why, then you explained to reverse twist and open. Thanks for teaching me this.

You are so welcome! There is a look I am after.. So the twist needs to be that for each type of basket and material size.. Once you get the look or "eye" you'll know exactly how many twists to get it just right.

Thank you Jennifer for putting a new video on RU-vid. I like hearing you narrating so I can watch you work and not have to read. It's 8:00 here in California so your Christmas is almost over but I will wish you a merry rest of your Christmas and a happy new year.

Reminds me of my first job out of high school in the sixties , I worked at Henderson Ornamental Iron , in Lansing , Il , I used to have to make the twisted pickets { right terminolgy ? } for railings for front porches , etc . They had a homemade machine that looked like a lathe , it would twist each piece cold , 6 or 7 twists , I would do a couple hundred at a sitting .

Nice. Not nearly as much fun as twisting wire though.. love your channel.

I also like the way you form the toe of your scarves. I tend to use the far side edge/face of the anvil, but that's not always possible to do. I'll have to try that next time rather than dropping my tong hand way down.
@jlpservicesinc1452
@jlpservicesinc1452 2 года назад
@@b.f.ironworks4609 Mark Apery has it worked out simply by cutting off stock.. It's elegant in its simplicity but I hate losing that little bit of material just on principal. So using the peen was my work around. I call this type of scarf a European scarf first seeing it in the "Corsiar Rural book series". Up to seeing this in the book I used flat scarfs which were shown in all the old books.

I really enjoyed your video.. Your acoustics were much better than mine.. As was your lighting.. I'll be looking forwards to your next video..

I did some experimenting this year with basket twists leaving two of the rounds a little longer so that I could sandwich a piece of 16 gauge welded in between them to make a garden trowel.

Making a fire poker like that, with interruptions and explanations, in 30 minutes, is insane. Takes me longer than that just to get the basket twist right!

Hi Jennifer, waited long for new videos from you, love them all. What´s the reason that you stand on this side of your Anvil? In Germany we are normaly standing on the other side.
@jlpservicesinc1452
@jlpservicesinc1452 2 года назад
Thanks for the kind words Arno, I am right handed and have the horn to the right. Because this is a right handed anvil the side shelf is on the wrong side.. For me it works out well.. Ideally in a perfect world, I would have gotten a left handed anvil in this model but they haven't made them in years. I am currently designing my own anvil and hoping to get it cast sometime in the near future..

Great instructional! Is there a specific benefit to cutting before folding and welding the poker end, vs just folding and welding? I do the latter, but am curious about the cutting before folding. Also, did you do the twist cold? Looks lovely and even on both ends.

Accuracy and speed.. Notching it and bending it is super fast.. I like small hooks where most people make large ones.. Years back I made large ones but found they just get in the way... The small hooks fit in between the wood and are useful. So, If you do the challenge try to follow along to get the same results.. How you get there is up to you.. I twisted the middle section cold.. No good reason to heat 3/8" sq to twist it in this particular example.
