A video inspired by a request from one of my patrons who's daughter wants to try blacksmithing. This got me thinking about what the most basic forge setup might be - and here it is!
I chat about the tools you need. Then demonstrate you don't need to spend much money on special equipment by knocking up a forge, setting up an anvil and finish with making a small project.
Chapters:
00:00 Intro
01:02 Tools and PPE
08:45 Building the forge
19:00 Anvil
26:13 Demo
If you want to join those supporting my channel (starting at £1!) you can check out my Patreon page here:

What a great video, you don't get many "experts" going back to basics and showing people how things can be done when you're starting off with very little €€ Me myself am best described as a shed tinkerer. I like nothing better than making stuff from "junk" or fixing up discarded items..... not to sell, some stuff i give to deserving people and some i use myself. I'm eyeing up the barbecue in the garden now 😂👍🇮🇪

how about using mud or clay to replace the brake disk? when i was a lad i used my mums hair drier to make a forge, i went to the park to harvest wood, made charcoal and melted steel. I just dug a hole in the garden, hack sawed a bit of bike to direct the air, chucked my mums hair dryer next to the pipe and you could melt steel.

Many moons ago I started with scrap lead pouring shot for recharging, as a 14 year old licenced shotgun owner and operator it made total sense to charge your own cartridges. I then started tinkering around with forging, apart from the use of various lengths of railway both right side up (bit of curve on top )as right side down(larger flat surface) I used old discs from a disc plough along with a length of metal pipe and an old hairdryer! Great video and very instructive. Thank you.

What about a couple of fire bricks and a cheap hand held blow torch, the ones that you screw in a gas canister for the forge. The above would be a cheap version of what we used in the metalwork shop at school many years ago.

Absolutely fantastic. Love the set up. Just one suggestion... The sledge head has it's shaft holes facing up. If you rotate it 90 degrees you gain a flat surface rather than an unusable hole for the handle. This could give you a wider dressing face. Granted its' not solid but it would be fine for light work. Always a delight watching your ingenuity.

Brilliant video Max. May it inspire people to start . Sadly it reminded me that the Local Authority I worked for in the seventies, removed without warning the forges and all tools from the smithy room. The reason was no more interest from youngsters and health and safety. It was a devastating blow to many, especially as the pupils worked up technical drawings and created a project to take home. We now are seeing the wheel going full circle.

On the charcoal front, if you want to keep things cheap, look out for post-summer deals where places are selling it all off dirt cheap to make room for christmas stock, I've got big bags of lumpywood charcoal (only 4.5KG, but big bags!) out in the shed I bought for cheap back in 2022, looking in my emails, 4 of them were £4 a pop in August, and December, another 5 of the same were £2 a go, not into forging myself, but I'm set for BBQing for years... :D

@NewWorldHoarder
@NewWorldHoarder 21 день назад
@@twocvbloke sorry to hear that! I know your pain with back issues, crippling. Weber kettles are the absolute best! I wasted countless smaller sums of money on crappy ‘oil drum’ style barbecues over the years. They’d use a tonne of charcoal and just burn the food as there was no separation between flame and food. If it rained, game over. Not to mention the fact that any charcoal left just burn off at the end of a cook session. Oh and they would fill with water over winter and become a rusty pond surrounded by spider eggs by the spring 😳🤢 Bought a Weber Master Touch GBS 57cm about 7 years ago and haven’t regretted a single penny spent! 😁 I can do fantastic pre-cook ‘bakes’ on dodgy meats like chicken and pork with the lid closed, rain or shine, and finish off with a sear over direct coal. The thing is amazing. I use my kamado for low & slow brisket, ribs, chickens etc, but never grill direct on it. The Weber is therefore more versatile in my opinion. Heat retention isn’t as great as the kamado but I can still snuff the fire with the lid and vents and save charcoal, albeit to a lesser degree than the super frugal kamado. I hope you have a wonderful summer of barbecuing and that your back doesn’t play you up too much. I too am a charcoal hoarder at end of season, but sadly since the demise of Wilko you have to be on the ball as the supermarkets clean out in a few days once reduced.
@twocvbloke
@twocvbloke 21 день назад
@@NewWorldHoarder Mine's just a Weber Compact 47, and it's been pretty decent, had to do a mod to it though and that was to add a thermometer to the lid so I could see how hot it was inside, but other than that, it's been a great barbecue, best thing about them is they're enamelled so they are less prone to rusting after one use like something from argos, and spare parts are plentiful too as Weber actually supports their customers, I'd love one of their 57cm ones, but haven't had the money for it, but even so the 47 does really nicely for me regardless... :)
@NewWorldHoarder
@NewWorldHoarder 21 день назад
@@twocvbloke Hey 47cm of Weber is better than a metre of B&Q garbage! 😃 Of you get a deal on a 57cm grill go for it, it’s a game changer! I can use enamelled cast iron skillets to slow cook stuff around the perimeter whilst preparing for the sear. I never fill the whole charcoal grill, I use the Weber half moon shaped charcoal pans. One of two depends on what I’m cooking. The Aldi /Lidl ones were better and smaller but rusted away. Either way, if you upgrade NEVER let go of your smaller one, you can customise your needs for each cook. As for the enamel, yes! Mine blew over in the weather modification storms some years ago. I brushed the scars up with an angle grinder and then sprayed some black stove paint onto the damaged lip. No issues since.

Fabulous video Max - the world needs more blacksmiths both hobbyist and professional. I was lucky in that I was given a few tools when I started and that allowed me to start making some of my own. Fully agree with the advice on hammer weight. I've seen far too many new to blacksmithing buying big, heavy hammers and struggle after just a couple of dozen blows. I'd rather hit something for twice as long in order to maintain control. Never thought about using a sledgehammer, but have used old railway track shaped in to curved and flat profiles with an angle grinder. The only other thing I made to make my set fully portable was a basic set of double bellows - there are hundreds of patterns out there. There are still times when I've gone on site to do repair work only to find out that the nearest socket is several hundred metres away. PS Hope Grandad is in fine fettle.

about hair dryers, those things are not buildt to run for very long, they will get hot and break down. If you are lucky, its just a fuse, but they will still take a pause and interrupt your work. And burn out. I would not trust them, they are great for what they are, drying hair, but thats it. And that's ok, you don't use an electrig tooth brush as a dremel substitute, even if you sort of could. For a short periode.
