Blacksmithing has been a curiosity for both myself and my son Matthew. This year, Beth and I gave Matt a blacksmithing class for his birthday. I was fortunate to tag along as a second student as Beth kindly purchased two spots in the class. Matt is very interested in bladesmithing and I have an interest in archetectural and decorative ironwork for our ranch property in southern Oregon. I also strongly believe building a forge on the ranch will be beneficial for ranch repairs and fabrication work.
I was very impressed with the beginning blacksmithing curriculum that Dan has created. For two guys that have never struck and anvil, Matt and I left White Hart Forge with quite a respectful overview of safety, basic forge work and a cool set of forged projects that included a steak flipper, a meat fork, an S-hook, a drive in post hook, a mild steel knife and a tempered tool steel knife. How is that possible in only two days? Well Dan is quite a creative and patient smith. This set of projects reinforces and builds on skills from the prior project. Despite that impressive list of projects the pace of the class was very comfortable. Matt and I especially enjoyed visiting with Dan and learning about local history and blacksmith lore during downtime as the forge warmed up in the morning and after lunch breaks. If you enjoy history this will be a win-win combination!
As a Dad, when I saw the smile on Matt’s face when he quenched his first blade I quietly said to myself “mission accomplished”. I also realized that now I was even more excited and comfortable with the idea of building a forge on Mountain View Ranch. Now, time to put that old Mousehole Forge anvil that Matt and I picked back into service!
