West Virginia waterfalls! Yes, that's plural because this park has more than one waterfall. We have to admit though, the highlight of this park is the stunning, crashing Blackwater Falls which can be seen from two different positions in the park. Blackwater Falls State Park is located in the Allegheny Mountains and features 20 miles of hiking trails, overlooks, creeks, a lake, a river, and a canyon.
What we love about Blackwater Falls State Park:
1. The natural features- waterfalls, river, trails, canyon, rocks, wildlife...Beauty abounds here!
2. Ice Cream - We had ice cream more than once at the Blackwater Falls Trading Post. There are other goodies there but the blueberry and banana nut ice cream was the best!
3. Surprise 50 amp service, the campground is upgrading.
4. Spacious sites some wooded, some grassy
5. Scenic park roads
6. Mountain setting
7. Next to Monongahela National Forest and that trail system
8. Quiet and peaceful
9. Winter sport area
10. Great weather for mid- August
11. Lots of choices for staying here: campground, cabins, lodge
What we didn't love about Blackwater Falls State Park:
1. Verizon service is Roaming, weak.
2. Some sites are not level, awkward placement of some electrical boxes, and no onsite water. * The campground has plans to upgrade.
NONE of these are deal breakers and well worth a visit.
