Yes he really is. I come from the support crew that was at caribou ranch recording studio in Colorado. The likes of Stephen stills, Dan fogelberg, Joe Walsh etc. listening to those guys practice and record.
So great! I love how powerful Bert’s early stuff is. “The Gardener” is one of my favorites. Everyone I’ve seen cover it is too gentle. The studio recording of it is so strong
Thanks Andrea! I'm humbled you've found me here, your guitars are highly regarded among my circle of friends. Hope to have one some day. I'm playing a late 35 000-18 here.
@@andrewlardner oh, actually Alessio and I are big fans! We love the way you adapt your technique to the artist you are covering, and the exquisite choice of instruments and the quality of your recordings. Big fans! Of course we’d love to build something for you someday. Let’s keep in touch and keep up the great work
Beautifully played as usual and that '35 Martin through a Sonos Beam sounds sublime. Looking forward to my 000-18 sounding like that 75 years from now!
That’s great! It’s always hard to know the best way to mix these, I try to make them loud enough so they’ll sound ok on a phone or laptop, but they are really geared to be listened to on good headphones at lower volume. I place mics to somewhat simulate the placement of our ears and pan hard left and right so one mic is left channel and the other is right. I haven’t mixed using monitors in a while so I appreciate the feedback.
I've had Reynardine in my head recently and came across you video on RU-vid, and thought hey I know that guy! Lovely playing, as always, Andrew, and great sounding recording. Your feel and precision is impeccable. I should get back to some serious guitar study and will learn lot from your recent videos! Hope all is well in Milwaukee and sending my regards.
Amazing versions. Simply outstanding. I've been playing those songs for years, but man you make them sound good. And oh boy that 000-18... Literally my dream guitar. May I ask you what strings did you use? They sound super dark and seem to have a lot of tension even with the 6th tuned to C# and the shorter scale... Cheers!
Hi Ismael. Thank you. On all of my vintage six strings I use daddario phosphor bronze light. I don’t like the sound of new strings at all, I feel like they mask the tone of the guitar, so if I’m planning on using an instrument to record if the strings are fresh I try to give them at least a couple weeks of playtime before recording.
Thank you Bob. It is just a capo that is stored behind the nut. Your thought is not entirely incorrect though. Some of my guitars have such an incredible amount of resonance that you can hear an undesirable vibration coming from the strings behind the nut, and this is the reason I leave the capo there when not using on this guitar, tones down any vibration coming from the headstock.
My friend and I try to catch Willie Porter every year in Green Lake at the Thrasher House. I'm from the Green Lake/Princeton area. It's a perfect little venue for solo musicians or bands with a decent size stage. If you perform, we would love to have ya sometime. ?
@@andrewlardner We used to watch Wille at the little bars in Racine when I lived there back in the 80/90's. So cool to see him now 35+ years later. Yeah if you do contact him, ask about the Green Lake Thrasher House. Who knows.....maybe play with him sometime!
Amazing 2 covers! Would like to join your Patreon and learn some from some of the tutorials on your channel, do you have many in open D tuning? Tis what i've been learning in and a lil reluctant to keep tuning my guitar up and down atm! Thanks :)
Hi Connor. I always joke with my students that if you are hesitant to retune it’s a good time to go get another guitar. We’re coming up on the 2 year Patreon anniversary, of the 22 pieces I’ve posted so far 3 are in open D. Echoing Gilewitz, Turnpike Terror, and Little Martha. Two others are very close to open D, Red Pony in open D minor and She Moved through the Fair in DADGAD.
@@andrewlardner Thanks for your reply Andrew! That certainly sounds like enough to sink my teeth into for the time being! Haha that's something i've been considering recently, it seems like a good enough excuse to buy something new! I've recently just gotten into Kottke as well so would be great to learn one of his tunes in my current preferred tuning! Thanks for the great videos :D
Hi Ronnie. My favorite 6 string hands down is my 17” Euphonon, I feel like it sounds good doing anything. The 12s vary so much they all have different purposes. I love the Bozo’s across the board. I really like the 63 B45 Gibsons for that early 6&12 Leo sound or Gary Davis stuff. Some of the guilds are nice too. Would really like to have an early Oscar Schmidt or Holzapfel around for earlier blues work.
