Those items detailed sound similar to Garryson Garryflex Abrasive Block, can be had in 36, 60, 120, 240 Grit Flexible Abrasive Cleaner. I think I got mine from Amazon ... Maybe £20.00 for a set of four. You could also get them individually . Local rapid delivery. They have been around a few years. Really shift the rust ... Giving you a clear surface to apply a finer polish to , if required.

Amazing product, I used it to clean rust from an old jambiya I bought in a thrift shop and it worked like a charm. One tip though - soak it in water for a few minutes before using, it works best when wet.

Matt...theses a product here in the states called Beekeepers friend. It is a common household cleanser, but it is quite effective in removing rust while avoiding excessive scratching of steel surfaces. Of course as you well know, you must wash and dry and oil afterward, as you don't want to leave any residue...use just a rag or cloth, and water.

I know you’re not making a lot of dust (and it’s awkward when talking to camera) but a mask, even a simple disposable, is a good idea when doing this sort of work. I tend to wear nitrile gloves too but only because I hate having to scrub my hands afterwards! This has reminded me that I’ve got a very large Bolo machete that needs reshaping, restoring and a new handle. That’s my weekend sorted 😊

The rust eraser is available in 3 grits and a larger size here in Canada from Lee Valley Tools , I have been using them for quite a few years to clean and polish my knives , because they are almost 3/4 in. thick they last for a long time ,they cost $21.50 for a set of 3 , or 8.00 ea , and are probably shipped faster from here than Japan . Hope this helps.

The jewelry trade has a vast quantity of different polishing and metal finishing products, one of which is polishing discs designed for use with rotary tools. Some are made of rubber like this thing. They come in a variety of grits and shapes. You should look at the Rio Grande or Gesswein catalogs on line to see what's available in the "abrasives" category.

Great video Matt, and of a product that had somehow eluded me which I will be getting my hands on. One advice though: always work with water when using these or sandpaper and add possibly gloves and a mask. This will help keep steel and silica dust outside of the air and most importantly your lungs. Silicosis is a terrible thing to suffer from and has plagued sword sharpeners and polishers for centuries.

Thanks Max.. I was wondering why I developed a bit of a cough and a sore throat!
@maximechouinard8902
@maximechouinard8902 5 лет назад
No problem. I made the same mistake when I polished my first few swords with sandpaper and ended up with a cough that lasted quite some time before a friend alerted me. If you have any interest in this, there were a few articles published in the 19th century talking about this issue with sword sharpeners. They, of course, polished many more swords than we do, but the death rate was so high among them the French government offered 3000fr to whoever could find a solution. Knife sharpeners today often have the same issues because they do not respect proper work safety. books.google.ca/books?id=bwWnU7Ae1vwC&pg=PR95&dq=emouleurs+lames+mort+poussi%C3%A8re&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiXt47Sjc7iAhWKnOAKHfdcD9AQ6AEIMTAB#v=onepage&q=emouleurs%20lames%20mort%20poussi%C3%A8re&f=false

Soak it in vinegar for 24hrs first and the bulk of the rust comes off with no scratches. Surprisingly effective and zero damage
@netyr4554
@netyr4554 5 лет назад
Never tried it on a blade but I sometimes make a paste with vinegar and plain flour to daub on rusty things, about 24 hours later I scrub the crust (now orange with rust) off with scrunched up aluminium foil or a brass brush dipped in water and sodium bicarbonate/baking soda, NOT baking powder (to neutralise the acid). In my experience acids will take off the original patina and leave a dull patina of their own (sometimes with an unpleasant gold tinge) but can be bought up quite nicely with a fine abrasive and steel wool. For vintage tools I just use a steel brush followed by steel wool to take off loose rust and polish whilst leaving patina intact.
