I make blades from the cannon of a tank of the army of occupiers. The resulting hardness is 57 Rockwell. To obtain a damask pattern, forging was used to stimulate the upward diffusion of carbon. See how the etching mask appeared at the link: • Video
Thank you all for your support in the comments. Today is the 501st day of the war.

On my patreon page, I began to explain the processes and secrets of my work. Topics already covered:
1. Why do I add pepper to container Damascus steel.
2. What do I sprinkle? Flux and its composition.
3. How do I remove the container from the workpiece (container Damascus steel).
4. Why am I drilling a hole in a container.
5. Why do I sweep away the dross from the anvil with my hand.
6. Why do I first forge some blanks on a tree.
7. In what and why do I soak the blank before forging.
8. In which granules do I place the workpiece after forging.
9. What kind of white powder do I pour into the container.
10. In what liquid do I develop the pattern on the blade.

Man these are freakin awesome. Im guessing the barrel is a mix of different metals, thats why it has a Damascus pattern? Very cool, and you have plenty left. Stay safe bud and God bless you all.
@KnightsWithoutATable
@KnightsWithoutATable 11 месяцев назад
The description of the video explains how he got the pattern. It says it was created by causing diffusion of carbon into the surface of the steel through the forging process. I am not familiar with the technique, but but I do know that metal was a single alloy, so this is not a Damascus, just a carbon diffusion pattern on the surface of the steel.
@HalcyonSkies
@HalcyonSkies 11 месяцев назад
Yeah they have to be made of the same alloy otherwise it would be a risk to the tank crew. Different metals obviously react to pressure and heat differently, so if they were to use different metals it could result in damage to the barrel when firing, either rendering it inoperable (bad in a combat situation) or it could explode and injure or kill the crew (worse in any situation).
@stevealford230
@stevealford230 11 месяцев назад
@@KnightsWithoutATable No, that is "real" Damascus; the modern faux Damascus you're thinking of is a way to simulate the look by pattern-welding different alloys. Traditionally, Damascus is a crucible steel that has a high Vanadium content, which creates nucleation sites that create Carbon nanotubes, and if forged correctly causes those random wavy patterns from Carbon nanotube nucleation sites to become visible after fine polishing and etching. Traditional Damascus is highly prized for making gun barrels and cannons, hence why Russia still uses it for that purpose in tanks. He didn't cause diffusion of the Carbon: he forged in a manner that doesn't destroy the Carbon diffusion that was already there, then revealed it (most smiths will accidentally destroy the beauty of real Damascus by forging it as if it were any other alloy).
@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify 11 месяцев назад
The gun barrel is likely a vacuum remelted or electro-slag refined steel, very homogeneous and with very low levels of impurities. Such highly refined steel is desirable for both withstanding the stress of firing and ensuring that the barrel doesn't warp when it gets hot after repeated shots.
@KnightsWithoutATable
@KnightsWithoutATable 11 месяцев назад
@nerd1000ify Keep in mind that the barrel was off of a T-72 made in the Soviet Union. They were made cheap and in large numbers. It was most likely hot rolled steel, drilled, bored to near final size, hardened, tempered, then bored to final size. Nothing fancy, just a lot of heating and cooling.

Regarding the "forging was used to stimulate the upward diffusion of carbon" does this have to do with (among other things) the angle at which you placed the billet into the press?
