Blagoje Bersa (1873. - 1934.) was a crucial figure in Croatian compositional scene, as he was one of the first to slowly break away from the romanticism of Zajc; setting the foundations to its more modern orchestral style by bringing in various influences: from the the sensibility of Strauss, evident in symphonic poems such as Sunny Fields and Idylle, introducing realistic and veristic themes in Croatian opera, most relevantly in Oganj ("flames" or "inferno"), to pioneeing in impressionistic style with his most famous suite for piano "Po načinu starih". He composed mostly vocal works, pieces for solo piano and diegetic music. Bersa avoided opting for classical forms and often wrote miniatures.
When observed as a whole, even though it is more eclectic than individual, Bersa's oeuvre is one of the greatest hallmarks of Croatian art music in the 20th century, and with him the period of modernistic pedagogy beigns, as bersa raised and influencd the entire generation of musicians: from Matz to Papandopulo and Cipra.
