Bland Operatic Model C Radio Restore - Part 3 and AWA 565MA Repair

This radio is a job I didn't want and had refused a number of times but it meant something to the owners so I finally capitulated. With the radio chassis case finished I need to make a speaker, the original speaker disappeared with the bottom half of the cabinet. I also tackle the neglected AWA 565MA plastic radio.

You're the same man who said, "I don't want to do this radio." then grudgingly started the work. Then finished up creating a beautiful piece of furniture and a lovely sounding radio from not much more than ugly old scrap. I hope the owners do it justice and look after it properly into the future.

Dave you are far too modest mate. You didn't just bring it out, you made it shine. Really satisfying to watch and the sound was terrific as well. The clarity was amazing. Im sure the owners were more than impressed when they picked up their radios. And we are all surprised by the amount of restraint you showed by not going overboard on the AWA. Dave: "If these seize up I will give it away" Audience: "Yeah right Dave. Pull the other one"

Ah yes, WORK, is the curse of the electronic hobbyist! Back when I was a kid, they said Work was the curse of the drinking class, however I stopped drinking in 1980 other then an occasional glass of whine with my wonderful wife of 51 years and 5 days, may she rest in peace, the anniversary of her death is close now and I find my tear ducts still work just fine as every damn song on the radio, every television show from the old days remind me of her. We were inseparable for over 50 years, GOD how I do miss her. Even the Bakelite special turned out special. I hope you and your wife have a wonnerful time on holiday, and I hope that "Honey Do" list isn't so long that we are left waiting months to see what you come up with next! I would love it if you made one video with the reaction of the owners as you return one of these gems to them. It would be the icing on the cake, and incredibly satisfying for your viewers. Thank you for your hard work, dedication and patience. You are a maestro when it comes to taking a zombie living in a basket case and not only bringing it back to life; but as well, to making it more spectacular than it ever was in its former glory. Fantastic, Outstanding video Dave!!! While I personally would still have preferred to have had the speaker installed in an addition to the bottom of the radio cabinet, this speaker project is BRILLIANT!!! Amazing job on it too. I have wanted to build cabinets for radios with a bend on the top but had no idea how, now I do. This video is so educational, inspirational, useful, encouraging, thoughtful, and done in a much-needed step-by-step how-to fashion so that we mere mortals can do the same as you. That reminds me, of course, you occasionally make a mistake or two...which you usually turn into Serendipity or absolute genius...but please don't put yourself down! You constantly help all of us to find ways to have hope and see that with perseverance we too can find a way to make things work in spite of downturns. I have so very much enjoyed this series on this set...keep up the excellent work! I will miss your posting new videos soon, but take that break...you have more than earned it!!! Tell your wonderful wife that her choice of cloth to use on the speaker was brilliant! An excellent choice!

Hi Wayne. I went through a number of ideas for the speaker including yours but I was keen to do a bit of bending and turning and scrolling to see how I went with it. I don't think I put myself down, I get frustrated with myself for taking shortcuts and making a mess but it works out in the end... mostly 😉 Thanks Wayne, I'm so glad you enjoyed this and wish you all the best at your woodworking and bending if you do it. BTY, you can used MDF and thicker plys to bend and if it's over 6mm thick use an online kerf calculator for a perfect bend, cheers 🙂

It's kind of a shame it doesn't have a phonograph built in with that big enclosed 8" speaker. You did an absolutely outstanding job on this. This thing was garbage and headed towards a dump. Now it can become a proud family heirloom. Honestly, if my friend did this to an old beat up radio I had and asked him to fix, I would be speechless and feel terrible because of all the hours I would know it had taken. If you took that hacked up piece of sh*t barn fine to 99% of restorers they would of laughed and said: For get it. That monstrosity should of been thrown away years ago. But David you took on the challenge and turned it into a work of art. The people that the radio has sentimental value will love it and cherish it for many years to come. Sign the inside case with your name and date it. The speaker came out perfect. I was not to keen on a radio so large with an external speaker. But you pulled it off. The dimensions of the speaker is not to small or to large. It fits the radio perfect. Your wife has a great eye and the grill cloth looks much better. It was a pleasure watching this 3 part series. And here it is once more. I love the way this radio came out, I keep coming back to see the process once again. You know I would have considered removing those panels on the sides and putting in the cloth, the putting speakers on each side sort of like the old Juke Boxes of the 50's when I was a kid. Just a thought, Merry Christmas, a day late I guess. Sad Christmas this year, the weather was so bad my grand kids never made the trip South to see us in South Dakota, blizzard warnings for our area today. My daughter and I celebrated the holiday and my niece came over, I am the last of the Ericsson clan, well of mom's kids that is, Mom is still kicking but I never made the trip to see her, the home is but 5 blocks from my house but I am suffering a bit of bronchitis and I didn't want to pass it on to her, the home has some Covid going around and I didn't want to get that either. Perhaps next week I can make the visit. My son and his family said they will make the trip South for mom's 98th birthday in February if she is still with us. Her health is failing but she is a strong old gal.

David Hi For several months now, when I come home from work, I have been watching your channel until the very night - I am from Israel - but my native language is Russian - I did not immediately understand that you are from Australia - it is very difficult to understand your pronunciation - but I am learning :)) All my life I have been repairing medical equipment ..... But a lamp is something else ... I'm 62 and I've built a lot of amplifiers and phono stages You are a real master .... Super filming ... You devote a lot of time to the channel SUPER Yan

Absolutely magnificent! At 30:30 you had me in stitches! The grille looks like a perfect task for a laser cutter, much less stressful than a scroll saw! I've seen one cut 1 mm strips of 3 mm poplar plywood, these things are nothing short of amazing! There's a lot of things a laser cutter can't do but cut intricate designs out of plywood at lightning speed is definitely something they can do. All you need to do is finish off the charred edges with a bit of sandpaper or a small file. I do know I'm spoiled I can use one at work every day though, they're quite expensive and bulky. If you can find a place that has one, definitely try it. You've mentioned Inkscape a few times and that's exactly what I use to create designs for the laser cutter. I think I might have been tempted to do the back of that speaker cabinet like a 50s/60s radio, i.e. 2 mm hardboard with a bunch of holes.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 3 года назад
Thank you Ragnar8504. There is probably things I can do on a laser cutter that I haven't thought of but I think I will pass on one for the time being because I don't think I would get the use from it and they are big. A piece of peg board of the back, brilliant! 👍😀

That looks amazing and so in keeping with the style of the rest of the cabinet. That belongs in a radio museum showroom. The owners certainly picked the right person for the resto. You've set a high benchmark with this one. I fear everyone will be sending you beaten up radio's and cabinets for you to work your magic on now.

Dave you are a legend. It looks astounding, even inside! I love that you mentioned Dame Edna who we were lucky enough to see in Seattle a few years ago. Oh how she picked on a woman in the audience who lived in one of the toniest suburbs of Seattle. Our hotel front desk person was young and never heard of Dame Edna. She thought we were talking about a rock band. Anyway, beautiful work yet again!
